Editorial: Cutting the cable cord is a young trend going in the right direction
This week I bought a Roku. Late to the party? Yes, but not as late as you might suppose. Roku has sold about 2.5 million streaming media boxes since the product launched in 2008. Approximately 1.5 million of those units moved in 2011, indicating an acceleration of demand. Coincidentally, those numbers roughly represent the cord-cutting movement: Reportedly, 2.65 million cable subscribers ditched their service between 2008 and 2011, with about 1.5 million of those defections happening in 2011.
While cable cord-cutting is a trend, the movement is occurring in the context of customer inertia. About 100 million customers subscribe to cable, satellite, and other pay-TV providers (e.g. AT&T’s U-Verse). The problematic value proposition of cutting the cord will probably keep massive inaction in place for the short term, but cannot, I believe, withstand long-term marketplace demands.

The Harrison Street Residences in California Built for a Young Family

The Harrison Street Residences were designed by by Dawson+Clinton design and build firm. The multi-family residential building is located in in San Francisco, California. Seamlessly connecting the interior and exterior spaces, the design of this residential building proves that multi-unit residences have a specific charm in an urban neighborhood. Created for one of the owners at Dawson+Clinton, the home of Paul Dawson and his young growing family was completed in three years. Basing the design on the family needs – especially on what it takes to raise two young children aged 3 and 5 in an urban setting – the Harrison Street Residence was built to offer as much safe space for outdoor activities and as much entertaining space on the inside. In addition to this, the roof deck allows the parents to keep an eye on the children as they enjoy the back garden. The bright interior spaces were especially created to be open and durable, to endure the games of growing children. This residence displays a modern, high-quality environment for a young family while looking contemporary and youthful.

DIY Project: Cute and Stylish Young Ladies’ Dresser

Young ladies are often confronted with the inability to choose between one cute furniture item and the next. This lovely home corner found on Pinterest ( feel free to follow us on Pinterest here ) seems to emanate only good vibes. The dresser in the image is particularly appealing with its small dimensions and gradually decreasing baby blue. Moreover, the fact that every drawer has a different hue could make organizing items much easier. But there is something else that caught my attention when first seeing this whimsical dresser: the fact that almost anyone with a little will and wood could come up with something just as interesting. We also like how the owners managed to integrate this piece into such a warm and cozy decor. Can you believe such a simple furniture piece can bring so much color and appeal to a place? Freshome readers, what children furniture did you design lately?

Inspiring Conference Table for Ernst & Young Boardroom by KINZO
Sweeping, dynamic and asymmetrical lines and bold structural design: KINZO’s boardroom conference table for the management board of Ernst & Young is a bespoke furniture that you won’t see anywhere else. This table seems to change its looks from every angle you look at it: Depending on your perspective, it could remind you of a starship, a deep-sea ray or a hydrofoil. Especially the asymmetrical lines enable an optimal use of space and make a significant contribution to an inspiring atmosphere in meetings. KINZO achieved ample legroom for 15 persons so no one will bump into the table legs – simply because there are no table legs. KINZO has taken a principle from structural engineering by fixing the table’s structure on a circular beam: the inner ring supports the cantilevered table surfaces.

Starting from the “heavyweight” chairman’s position, the table looks increasingly lighter and airier in connection with the opposing panoramic windows – a playful take on statics that creates a very dynamic vibe: In this way, the conference table reminds you of a rocket that is just about to take off – and break directly through the glass front. Four flush-mounted “media tanks” swallow unsightly cables and provide power and network access for laptops and other devices. Good news for cost-conscious design fans: Exclusive individuality, style and optimised functionality didn’t cost a fortune. – Thanks Daniela Kramer for the suggestion.
