Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L

architecture Powerhouse Company Villa L Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L

Especially envisioned for the hectic life of an evolving family with three children, Villa L located near Utrecht in The Netherlands is an example of functionally fragmented spaces within a unified whole. The house was designed by Powerhouse Company together with RAU and is optimally set in the woods of central Netherlands, oriented towards the sun and garden views.

According to the client’s brief, the new residence had to be “simple yet surprising, open yet specific, minimal yet luxurious. Powerhouse Company, responsible for the design, resolved these contradictions with a house based on a radical differentiation of spatial experiences on three floors (of which one is subterranean). RAU embedded the sustainable strategy for the villa in the design. Three clear levels, with three very different characters and functionalities as a basis for family life to emerge“. Resembled with village cabins, the modern rooms of the unusual family home provide privacy and peaceful living.  exterior Powerhouse Company Villa L Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 3 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 5 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 6 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 7 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 8 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 9 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 10 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 11 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 12 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 13 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 14 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 15 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L Powerhouse Company Villa L 16 Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L

Sony teases new Xperia phone unveiling within days, wants you to speed it up on Facebook

Sony teases new Xperia phone unveiling in days, wants you to speed it up on Facebook

As much as we’re used to companies offering big teasers for their future devices, it’s still rare that they put the revelation itself under our control. Sony’s trying just that: its mobile division’s Facebook page is promising a new Xperia phone whose unveiling date is contingent on how many people “fast forward” the unveiling date from its original June 22nd. As we’re writing, the date has already been moved up to June 20th, and there’s a good chance the phone will show up sooner. Just what we’ll see is a mystery — it could be the finished version of the tiny ST21i we saw in April, an international version of the Xperia Neo L, or something else entirely. We’ll know as soon as enough visitors give Sony the go-ahead, although we wouldn’t be surprised if the references to time are clues.

RIM may cut 2,000-plus jobs within two weeks

RIM may cut 2,000-plus jobs within two weeks

RIM’s current chief Thorsten Heins has had to make some tough decisions in the first few months of his tenure — and he could be making some particularly difficult choices about trimming the rank and file within the next two weeks. Assuming we take the claims of several contacts for Canada’s The Globe and Mail at face value, “at least” 2,000 jobs are being cut on or before June 1st. The numbers could climb higher at that: Reuters is bracing for as many as 6,000 layoffs, and has described an unhappy routine of “Goodbye Thursdays” where more recent hires are let go. RIM has turned down comment on what it calls “rumors and speculation,” and we’d hope for the sake of those possibly affected that it’s not true. Having said this, it’s hard not to imagine Heins wanting to streamline the BlackBerry maker as much as possible to adapt to shrinking market share and keep the company afloat until BlackBerry 10 potentially spurs a revival.

Experimental controller has ‘thumbstick within thumbstick’ for blistering sensations (video)

Experimental controller has 'thumbpad within a thumbpad'

Just when you thought slingshots were the future, here comes a whole new way to enjoy baddie deletion in Uncharted 7. Each thumbstick on the prototype controller above has a secondary force feedback-enabled nub at its center, which moves independently and creates different sensations by stretching the skin on the pad of your opposable digit. In the video after the break, the designers at the University of Utah show how they’ve created effects for crawling, collisions, explosions and even fishing. They’re apparently hoping to push their technology into next-gen games consoles, but they’ll have to join the queue.

Lovely Design Details within a Charming Australian Family Home

Resize of PALM BEACH 1004 Lovely Design Details within a Charming Australian Family Home

Palm Beach Residence is an intriguing remodel of a family home achieved by Brooke Aitken Design and located in Australia. According to the architects, “this older style house directly located on Sydney’s famous Palm Beach required an significant internal facelift. The house is used as a holiday home for up to 14 people and it was important to provide a relaxed beachy aesthetic that could cater for many people“. When we asked Brooke for some photos of this delightful crib, we were pleasantly surprised to receive some pretty impressive details of the project. We were charmed by the small open plan living room enriched with interesting wooden artifacts and by the simple color palette. Clever shelving systems, an immaculate all-equipped kitchen, a vintage coffee table and a cozy lounge area make for a highly welcoming atmosphere. We believe you will find the details in the images below both intriguing and inspiring. Enjoy!

Family Heaven Within Contemporary Walls: DG House by DOMB Architects

DG House 7 Family Heaven Within Contemporary Walls: DG House by DOMB Architects

Occupying a surface of 660 square meters, the DG House by DOMB Architects is a simple contemporary residence built using materials like painted plaster, grey oak and glass. With a narrow facade and neighbouring a public park on the backside, the residence leaves the impression of a highly modern house with clean design lines. Two asymmetrical boxes connected through open staircases shape the layout of the house. The center of the residence is a double height space that brings the family together in a great and comfortable entertaining area. Double doors lead out to the pool and a long deck crosses the entire length of the house, from the entrance to the backside garden, visually connecting the spaces. Glass walls cleverly located offer a bright atmosphere and allow visual connection between the inside spaces. The private quarters of the house ensure the much needed quiet time for the adults on the ground floor, while the children’s rooms are situated on the first floor, where a private living room and independent bathroom ensure their independency from the rest of the house. The kitchen is connected to the dining room and the outside barbeque, making it easy for the family to enjoy their meals together. Other facilities were built in the basement for comfort, relaxation and entertainment: a screening room, fitness facilities and a studio. Having this much space and so many ways of enjoying family life must be a dream come true.

Sony update on PSN / Qriocity outage: ‘some services up and running within a week’

As the PlayStation Network / Qriocity outage stretches into its second week, over on the PlayStation Blog rep Patrick Seybold has just posted an updated Q&A based on the inquiries of concerned users. Beyond the security of our personal information, the most important question is when service might be restored and he reiterates Sony expects to have “some services” up and running within a week from yesterday. When it comes to the most important personal information like credit card numbers, there are assurances that the credit card database was encrypted and there is no evidence anything was taken, but that’s a possibility that still cannot be ruled out completely. To keep things secure, Gamasutra reports game developers are getting new SDKs with updated security features as well. When the service comes back up, expect a mandatory system update that requires a new password before getting back to your Mortal Kombat or Portal 2-related plans.

Universal remote arrives within a pillow, makes channel surfing hip again

It’s a pillow. And a remote. And if your powers of observation are anywhere near “strong,” you’ve probably deduced by now that you’re looking at a universal remote control… albeit one that’s wrapped within a pillow. We’ve seen similar creations come around in concept form, but leave it to the folks at Brookstone to turn this thing into a reality. Purportedly, this unit can be programmed to work with over 500 devices, and there’s a power-saving auto shutoff feature that’ll definitely be overrode by your incessant squeezing. We wouldn’t count on this thing actually working well, but for $29.95 (in addition to the cost of two AAA batteries, of course), we highly doubt you’ll find a more fashionable, lovable cube of cotton.
