Functionally Fragmented Spaces Within a Unified Whole: Villa L

Especially envisioned for the hectic life of an evolving family with three children, Villa L located near Utrecht in The Netherlands is an example of functionally fragmented spaces within a unified whole. The house was designed by Powerhouse Company together with RAU and is optimally set in the woods of central Netherlands, oriented towards the sun and garden views.

According to the client’s brief, the new residence had to be “simple yet surprising, open yet specific, minimal yet luxurious. Powerhouse Company, responsible for the design, resolved these contradictions with a house based on a radical differentiation of spatial experiences on three floors (of which one is subterranean). RAU embedded the sustainable strategy for the villa in the design. Three clear levels, with three very different characters and functionalities as a basis for family life to emerge“. Resembled with village cabins, the modern rooms of the unusual family home provide privacy and peaceful living.

Modern Elegance Enhanced by Unexpected Details: Villa in the Dunes

Envisioned by Alblasserdam-based Centric Design Group, Villa in the Dunes in the Netherlands exudes a highly modern design, spiced up by original details. The residence is surrounded by lush landscape, which sets aside the need for tall fences or closed facades. Instead, when approaching the house, you are greeted by a generously-sized terrace elegantly delimited by a brick wall. It is here that you will find plenty of outdoor leisure opportunities and not to mention very comfortable lounge furniture.

As you step inside, you are welcomed by an open plan living and dining space, perfectly framing the surrounding views. The fireplace wall does a great job at functionally dividing the space. The kitchen communicates with the dining table area, but is hidden from the living zone. Each bedroom features a king -sized bed, a TV and large windows. The most spectacular interior of the residence is probably the swimming pool room, a showcase of elegance and simplicity.

Victorian Villa Added an Origami-Like Extension: Lens House in London

Alison Brooks Architects completed the redesign and extension for a residence located in Islington, London, UK. Spread a total surface of 400 square meters (main building plus extension), Lens House displays an intriguing exterior. Its Origami-like extension consists of two irregular volumes, each having a well-defined functionality: “The first volume wraps around the brick walls at the side and rear of the house to create a home office, while the second volume extends out at the back to increase the size of the first floor living room“.

Large trapezoidal planes define the new interiors, which offer original perspectives both inside and out. According to the architects, to achieve the low profile of the ten-sided trapezoidal office extension, ABA “lowered the existing basement and excavated a new sunken courtyard to form a street-facing office entrance. This new lower ground floor level connects workspace and house. On the garden side, the building rests lightly on the ground with undercut walls to avoid the walnut tree’s roots“. Enjoy the photos and let us know how you find this particular architecture approach.

Original Modern Circular Villa in Cyprus: Loukas Residence

Presenting an unusual round shape, the Loukas Residence envisioned by Vardastudio Architects & Designers in Paphos, Cyprus caught our attention. The architects explain that the client’s wish for a “round house” came as a surprise. But overcoming all challenges, they managed to develop a round shaped concrete building, with a semi detached rectangle entrance. In the middle, there is a semi-circular modern outdoor swimming pool partially mirroring the villa.

According to the official description, “the house has a natural flow, it is spacious and structure is characterized by total simplicity. The plot is in a busy road, so the semicircle acts like a natural road boundary. Internal, everything is rotated around the semicircle pool that acts as a referee point of the whole project, as it can be seen by every spot in the house. By that semicircular volume, under-hangs a wooden one, where the office is. By that way the visual view of the circle is interrupted“. How would you comment on its original architecture?
