Inspired by the polygonal shape of minerals found in nature, Spanish architect Ramon Esteve has designed the Faz daybed for VONDOM. The resulting outdoor furniture piece mixes an elegant design with a practical ability to protect its user from harmful sun rays. Moreover, the lounge chair is equipped with wheels, making it easy to move from one place to another and create a versatile relaxation platform for sunbathing. Just switch the daybed around in order to get an optimum amount of sunlight!

The project also makes use of a hydraulic system, allowing its users to open and close it when not in use. A light top translucent fabric acts as a large protective umbrella. By connecting smartphone and bluetooth technology to the built-in speakers, you can play your favorite music by the pool. For a general idea on how the daybed works, have a look at the video placed at the end of the post!

Versatile and Original: Wall Hung Console #1 by Nico Yektai

We ran across a furniture piece that captured our attention due to its elegance and originality. Designed by Nico Yektai, this wall hung console comes with an intriguing appearance and a clever storage system. According to the description provided by the designer, “this is the first in the new series of wall hung consoles. The subject is of interest to me because of its versatility. The piece can be used as a console table, a buffet or an entertainment center. The form included drawers which all open in different directions”. Easy to integrate in a variety of modern decors, but also in minimalist ones with a more traditional theme, Wall Hung Console #1 by Nico Yektai is likely to become the focal point of the interior it adorns. “Floating effortlessly on the wall“, the project is easy to install and its massive wood construction and asymmetrical shape can inspire similar furniture improvisations.

Ultimate REK Coffee Table : Modern and Versatile

We recently received photos of a fantastic coffee table that can be modified to suit your needs. The REK Coffee Table, created by architect and designer Reinier de Jong, transforms from a wooden block into a multitude of designs with a few simple moves. After deigning furniture items like the REK bookcase, KEER chair and VOLT table, the talented Reinier de Jong created a versatile piece of furniture to accompany your everyday coffee. He explains the inspiration, use of materials and functions of this modern coffee table: “REK is a coffee table that grows with your coffee needs. When you have visitors, just get some chairs and extend the table any way you like. Enough space for all those coffee cups and store your book or knitting set in the spaces underneath the tops.

You can extend REK in various ways. Built-in stops make sure you will not extend the sliding parts too far. Of course you can also put REK in a permanent position that fits your interior. The top and two sides of REK are white HPL and the edges are finished with your choice of parquet wood: oak, berch or beech. The end grain side of the wood is beveled in order to get a grip: a subtle detail. The dimensions of the REK table obviously vary with its configuration. REK is 60 by 80 cm in collapsed state, its maximum length is 170 cm and its maximum width is 130 cm. REK coffee table is related to another REK by Reinier de Jong Design- the bookcase that grows with your book collection. ”

Multifunctional, Versatile Furniture for the Bathroom from Ex.t

Not so long ago we posted an interview with Meneghello Paolelli Associati, an Italian design agency that creates some pretty unique and creative sanitaryware. One of the bits of advice they gave us for bringing more creativity into the bathroom was to stop seeing the bathroom like a toilet and try to incorporate elements from other rooms in the house. This is the exact approach that Italian bathroom company Ex.t is taking and I have to say that I think this approach really works.
In order to make the bathroom a less traditional place, Ex.t offers multifunctional, versatile furniture solutions that can be used in all spaces of the house. All the objects are characterized by practical, simple and original aesthetics, and would look just as good in the living room or bedroom as they do in the bathroom.

Ex.t objects are designed by up-and-coming designers on the international design scene and are handcrafted in small laboratories in Tuscany, according to the artisanal tradition, which prioritises the use of metal, ceramics and wood. In this way, the flair of the Italian manufacturer is blended with the functional design vision of the international designers who created them: Sigrid Strömgren (Sweden), Hannes Gumpp (Germany), Gemma Fabbri (UK), Meike Langer (Germany), and Hiroshi Kawano (Japan).
This particular range has a rather northern European feel to it, which is felt through the choice of the colour nuances – Iceland grey, sky blue cloud, ice grey and pale pink – used for the furniture, accessories and lighting featured in the 2012 collection.

So how do you feel about these multifunctional pieces of furniture being used in the bathroom? It may not be traditional but I think it looks pretty good!

Gamecube-free Wii refresh heads to North America, competes with more versatile predecessor
Usually when a hardware refresh axes a major feature, it gets a comparable price drop. Not for Nintendo’s waggle star, however — the gamecube-free Wii refresh we’ve seen advertised for Europe is heading to North America for the same price as its backwards-compatible kin. $150 will get you a black console designed to lay on its side and streamlined to play only Wii software, a Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack and a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. All well and good, except that Nintendo’s press release (which you’ll find after the break) also promises that the existing Wii bundle will stick around, packing Mario Kart Wii, a Wii Wheel, backwards compatibility for Gamecube games and the very same $150 price tag as the downgraded redesign. Mark your Christmas wishlists carefully folks, this one’s a doozy.

An Elegant and Versatile Chaise Longue by James Uren

In case your were on the lookout for an elegant and flexible seating design, the Luso Lounger created by James Uren might fit the profile. Here is a description from the project developer: “The Luso Lounger is a modern reinterpretation of the Chaise Longue. It evolved from looking at redundant furniture, and re-inventing it to suit the way in which we live today. The addition of a footstool means that there are a number of different ways in which it can be used; a day bed, lounger, chair, footstool. The Luso lounger is an interesting asymmetric form that is versatile, makes an excellent use of space. The under-frame has been constructed using American cherry; the shell of the lounger is made from lacquered plywood”. Our attention was caught by its simple, yet clever appearance and we just had to share it further. What do you think of this original Chaise Longue ?

Affordable and Versatile Sommerhaus Piu Prefab Vacation Home

The collaboration between German industrial designers Patrick Frey and Björn Götte led to the construction of this small but comfortable vacation house named Sommerhaus Piu Prefab Vacation Home. The affordable house can act as a vacation home, a weekend retreat or even a year-round home for those with a small budget. The cabin home displays a modern design that stands out in the middle of nature with its slightly pitched roof and colour duality. Covered in horizontal wood planks, the prefabricated house was designed to offer its inhabitants both comfortable interior spaces and outdoor relaxation facilities. A porch painted in a darker colour defines the edges of the house – this darker accent spreads to the roof and margins of the cabin, creating a contemporary visual appeal. The roof shapes a veranda that wraps around the house and shades part of the building. Floor-to-ceiling windows leave the living zone exposed to the surroundings, while the private room in the back is protected by the walls. This vacation house is perfect for those who need to be surrounded by nature and rest in a simple, modern and versatile cabin.

In case you are on the lookout for some unusual shelving ideas, here is one that will raise your spirits. DreiX Balanced Shelf comes from designer Christian Kim and comes with an appealing and surprising design. The German creative took the horizontal bookshelf concept to a new level and came up with a unit that can be used both horizontally and diagonally. The user simply pushes the shelves from the margins up or down in order to create the desired effect and change the overall appearance of the wall the Balanced Shelf is placed on.
