Verizon says its Galaxy S 4 is coming sometime in May

Verizon says its Galaxy S 4 is coming sometime in May

If you noticed that Verizon was silent while other US carriers provided their launch schedules for the Galaxy S 4, you’re not alone — it was the only real holdout among the big four networks. As it turns out, the company was just continuing a small tradition of being fashionably late with influential phones. Big Red now says its version of the Samsung flagship will appear sometime in May, skipping past the first wave of GS 4 releases later in April. An exact date? Pricing? Capacities? Those are coming at an unspecified point “soon,” although that may not be soon enough for subscribers who have to own the latest and greatest.

Verizon confirms 12-month Device Payment Plan for phones is launching April 21st

Verizon confirms Device Payment Plan coming April 21st, with a catch

Look: we know many on Verizon aren’t happy that the carrier has revealed plans to lengthen its upgrade intervals right as smartphone update season is hitting full stride. However, there may be a consolation prize. As of April 21st, “some devices” in its smartphone range, not just the existing tablets, will qualify for a Device Payment Plan that spreads out the full costs over the course of a year, letting those who crave the latest mobile hardware (presumably, you) upgrade without either having to sign a contract or pay everything up front. Sounds like a very UnCarrier thing to do, doesn’t it? Not quite, unfortunately. The carrier tells us that these payments sit on top of existing service plans, not inside them — the base service rate won’t go down in year two. T-Mobile will remain the better bargain for anyone constantly replacing handsets, then, but those on Verizon will at least have a degree of freedom.

Verizon Media Server and IP client hands-on

Verizon Media Server and IP client handson

We caught up with Verizon at the booth and had a chance to spend some time with the new whole-home HD DVR and its clients, we were expecting last year. The VMS1100 media server features six tuners and a 1TB hard drive. You can connect up to five Motorola Medios+ IPC1100 IP-based set-top boxes to it to expand your DVR’s reach to six TVs. Not enough for you? Well, you can actually setup two Media Servers in your house and then scale the system up to 12 TVs. The experience on the clients is nearly identical to that of the TV connected to the server. The whole thing works over IP and with built-in MoCA it’ll run over the existing coax cables in your house. The user interface on the Home Media Server and clients is based on HTML5, which we’re told is why it’s so snappy and switches so quickly between other apps like YouTube and HSN’s Shop By Remote. What’s odd is that the IPC1100 client has a tuner, but it’s unused. Instead, the client relies on the server’s tuner for live TV. One other unused feature is the server’s ability to transcode. Although, Verizon did seem to intent to leverage this down the road, perhaps to prepare transfers to a portable devices for offline viewing. An exact release date wasn’t something Verizon wanted to talk about, but it’s expected to roll out this year, and presumably it’ll be a staged rollout as we’ve seen in the past. The whole-home DVR is expected to be offered as a premium over the existing offering, but exactly how much more it’ll cost is unknown.

Wilson Electronics’ Sleek 4G-V Verizon flavored signal booster reports for service

Wilson Electronics' Sleek 4GV Verizon flavored signal booster reports for service

If you’re often finding that your super-duper 4G service is more LT-Eh?, than LTE, then you might have been curious about Wilson Electronics’ Sleek 4G-V cellphone signal booster. If you were, it’s time to stop waving your hand in the air looking for bars, and stick it in your pocket in search of some sheets, as it’s now available in stores. Of course, it’s Verizon customers who’ll benefit the most, with the Sleek 4G-V being designed with the big red’s 700MHz service in mind. That said good old 2- and 3G services are still given a leg up. The MSRP remains $129 for the standard “in-vehicle” model, with an optional accessory kit for indoor use (no price at this time). If this message kept dropping out, head over to the window past the break for the PR.

Verizon website pushes Galaxy S III availability back two days, still shipping pre-orders

Verizon website pushes Galaxy S III availability back two days, still shipping preorders

Looking forward to picking up a Galaxy S III from Verizon this Tuesday? You’d better reschedule. According to the carrier’s website, Samsung’s latest Galaxy smartphone won’t be available until July 12th, contradicting the previously stated July 10th shelf date. Don’t get frustrated just yet though, we’re hearing reports from readers that their phone has already shipped, or in some cases already arrived, suggesting that pre-orders are sticking to Verizon’s original schedule. Stuck waiting? Look on the bright side, you have two extra days to read up on circumventing that Verizon-exclusive locked bootloader, right?

[Thanks, John]

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, TMobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month

Official is as official does… right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II’s launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by “soon,” we mean “beginning in June.” AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

Naturally, S-Beam, S-Voice, Smart Stay and Android 4.0 (with TouchWiz) will be onboard, with Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 at the heart of each matter. We’re told to expect 2GB of RAM across the board, with Gorilla Glass 2.0 guarding against your clumsiness. Moreover, we’re reminded of the mythical Pebble Blue hue (which will be available alongside Marble White), with a removable 2,100mAh battery and 16GB / 32GB capacity options. Looking to learn more? There’s a bit left just beyond the break, but the real deets will be pouring out in the weeks ahead from the carriers themselves.

Verizon confirms CEO Lowell McAdam will succeed Ivan Seidenberg as Chairman

It certainly doesn’t come as the biggest of surprises, but Verizon confirmed today that its current CEO, Lowell McAdam, will succeed its former CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, as Chairman when the latter retires on December 31st. McAdam, as you may recall, took over as CEO when Seidenberg stepped down from the position in July of this year, with Seidenberg remaining on as Chairman at that point to aid in the transition, which has apparently gone just as planned. In related news, the carrier also announced today that Melanie L. Healey of Proctor & Gamble will be immediately joining the board, which will stand at twelve members following Seidenberg’s departure. Head on past the break for the official press release.

Verizon begins collecting user data for targeted ads, is kind enough to offer ‘opt-out’ escape route

Verizon still wants to collect your personal information, but it’ll understand if you decide to opt out. Really, it’s cool. No hard feelings. The provider said as much yesterday, in an e-mail titled “Important notice about how Verizon Wireless uses information.” The missive, sent to all VZW customers, essentially lays out the company’s revamped privacy policy, originally unveiled last month. Under the new framework, Verizon will be able to monitor your browsing history, location, app usage, and demographic data, all in the name of targeted advertising and vaguely-titled “business and marketing reports.” The good news is that you can always opt out of the scheme, either by phone or online. The bad news is that you’ll probably have to explain the whole thing to your grandma.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus listed in Costco’s systems with a $289 pricetag

If you’re still thirsty for any release details of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Nexus, allow yourself to be ever-so-lightly-moistened by this Costco inventory screenshot from Android Central. It shows the Galaxy Nexus for Verizon priced at $289, a slim $10 discount on the $299 we’d heard in a leak a few weeks ago (that also predicted the price of the HTC Rezound, if you’re keeping score). There never was much doubt this Ice Cream Sandwich would be a pricey one, but its definitely one thing to consider while we await official news on its release and seemingly-inevitable Verizon exclusivity.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
