Mathematics Applied to Urban Elements: Ingenious Street Art by Aakash Nihalani

street art 3 Mathematics Applied to Urban Elements: Ingenious Street Art by Aakash Nihalani

Walking the streets and stumbling across  a work of Aakash Nihalani can mean a wonderful disruption. Blending mathematics into day to day life led the artist into the fun and playful world of ingenious street art. Entitled Sum Times and discovered on This is Colossal, the carefully executed projects below exude originality. Artist Aakash Nihalani usually creates (modern) art using neon-colored tape in various geometric forms, which is also the case in the works depicted by the photos below.

Everyone can spot simple mathematic formulas in day to day life, but few are those who take advantage of them in a professional purpose. With the help of inspired street art, old building can look cheerful and garbage cans can make one think of something else other than waste. Have a look at how the artist managed to transform some otherwise depressing urban landscapes into creative ones and let us know your thoughts on this particular initiative.

GE, Urban Green Energy set up first integrated, wind-powered EV charging station (video)

GE, Urban Green Energy claim first integrated, windpowered EV charging station video

GE and Urban Green Energy might not be the first to install a wind-powered EV charging station, but the two may be the best prepared to take the concept to a grander scale. The partnership just installed the first Sanya Skypump just outside of Barcelona to serve corporate and government drivers with truly clean energy at levels that meet their typically heftier demands. It’s billed as one of the first properly integrated wind-powered EV chargers, and it’s undoubtedly one of the more elegant: one of UGE’s 4K wind turbine towers catches energy from the breeze above, while a GE Durastation tucked neatly at the bottom provides high-voltage charging for EV drivers undoubtedly eager to get moving once again. Don’t worry if you don’t speak enough Catalan to charge up at the initial location, either, as plans are underway to bring Skypumps to malls and universities across Australia and the US before 2012 is over. The only catch is the frown you’ll likely get if you try to plug in a personal car for a top-up — let’s hope the attention swings towards completely green power sources for commuters in the near future.

Dynamic Urban Home Exposing 4 Meter High Graffiti Elements

The Hive by ITN Architects 1 Dynamic Urban Home Exposing 4 Meter High Graffiti Elements

An unusually eye-catching building became a dream come true for architect Zvi Belling of ITN Architects – his home is inspired by hip-hop culture and graffiti, making it uniquely inspiring. From the outside in, this stunning graffiti house creates a striking visual experience in one of Melbourne’s inner city suburbs. Precast concrete walls were lined with arrows, clearly visible especially at night, when lights accentuate them. Collaborating with graffiti writer Prowla, the proud homeowner designed his home as the first in a series of Hip Hop buildings. If at day it takes time to fully understand its beauty, at night it transforms into a dynamic piece of art playing in the shadows. “The HIVE” – as it came to be know – fascinates with its angular design lines, interiors being shared between dynamic angles in white and contrasting dark details, splashed here and there with color. An enigmatic design that unfolds in the deep urban jungle and provokes boring neighboring buildings, the house spotted on Complex boldly showcases its 4 meter high concrete letters.

Urban Ravine House by Bortolotto Design Architect

Bortolotto Design Architect have designed the Urban Ravine House in Toronto, Canada.

.

Description from the designers:

Located in Toronto’s Summerhill neighbourhood, the original 1,600 square foot, darkly traditional, staid 2 1/2 storey house was designed without consideration of its breathtaking ravine site. Today, sits a 4,000 square foot, four storey home that is oriented at all four levels to the natural beauty of the ravine to the south, with views to the city’s towers during the winter months and with views of a natural forest in the summer months. The house now has two faces, the traditional one facing the street and a modern one open to the ravine.

The driving concept in the design of the house is to connect it to the outside world. At the rear of the house which faces south, the inside is connected to the rear yard ravine through views to the spectacular landscape, the city and sky, and through outdoor decks and steps that lead down the sloped forested yard. As well, natural light is introduced to the centre of the house from the roof to the ground floor through a continuous vertical opening of a glass and wood central staircase via a skylight.

The two floors of the house are arranged around a central courtyard with an inviting swimming pool with palm trees mirroring on the water surface. Cumaru wood floors adorn the corridors shaped of white concrete walls. Black and white act as the charming color palette duo, with warm wood tones breaking the monotony here and there. Sliding doors keep a permanent connection to the outside space, managing to create an urban oasis of open, bright spaces. Urban Cabin by Fábio Galeazzo

Fábio Galeazzo has designed the “Urban Cabin” in São Paulo, Brazil.

.

Description from the designer:

In an old abandoned house were used retrofit construction techniques. The existing structure couldn’t handle the heavy load and was complemented by a sustainable framework of giant bamboo beams and columns treated in autoclaves, the roof received green thermal tiles.

On the floor it was used certificated management timber and some exotic brown granite as well as some walls and ceiling. In order to counter the whole structure and highlight the house amid the dense vegetation the interior and exterior walls were treated as a state of art and received several irregular shapes in different colors inspired in the universe of the modernist painter Tarsila do Amaral.

Outside, a stretch nautical fabric shades the area of the car and a great counter with tiles of different patterns glad the barbecue area which has communication with the swivel kitchen, allowing several combinations between internal and external area.

Inside, with the aim of enhance the view and increase communication between internal and external area a large shelf built in a circular shape frames the landscape. In the decoration design furniture as the giant bed-shaped nest, the “Chifruda” chair from the designer Sergio Rodrigues, the dinner table,”2 in 1″ from the designers Campana brothers and Scandinavian furniture fit perfect on the rustic structure.

The Shack is a contemporary version of housing that brings back the idea of one space living, matching technology and design proposing a new young way of living.
