Lovefilm signs TV deal with NBC Universal, brings the Office, 30 Rock to British homes
Following Lovefilm’s deal with NBC Universal to bring the latter’s movie catalogue to the streaming service, the pair have hooked up again to do the same job for the studio’s TV productions. Shows such as The Office (US), 30 Rock and Knight Rider will all be available for viewing, whenever your desire for some Corporate Hijinks / Alec Baldwin / talking cars takes hold. We’ve just checked and the shows are already filtering through — although you can only catch the first three years of Liz Lemon’s adventures so far.

Engadget Giveaway: win a Sony 40-inch 1080p HDTV, courtesy of NBC Universal!
It’s movie time, folks. The bad news is that you have to bring your own popcorn. The good news, on the other hand, is that the feature film and the TV are on us! Thanks to the folks at NBC Universal, there’s a 40-inch 1080p HDTV up for grabs. The occasion is the studio’s release of The Grey, starring Liam Neeson, on Blu-ray this coming Tuesday May 15th. If you’re the lucky winner, however, you won’t even have to venture out to stores to pick up a copy of your own — one will come included with the TV! Unfortunately, there’s one additional restriction this time around: only US residents are able to enter. But if you qualify, head below and leave a comment, and good luck!

In Brief: New Universal Logo

As part of their ongoing 100th anniversary celebration Universal Pictures has just premiered a new animated version of their famous globe logo. The new sequence has been created by digital effects powerhouse Weta (of Lord of the Rings fame) and features detailed satellite imagery on the globe as well as a new take on the recognizable intro music. A bit more story here. The above video shows previous logo animations, with the new one starting at the 0:39 mark.

Griffin Beacon universal remote control system hands-on
We visited Griffin’s CES booth to check out the Beacon universal remote control expecting yet another Redeye clone, but instead wound up walking away impressed. Two notable features of the prototype Bluetooth to IR converter device are that it’s battery powered and includes a 360 degree IR blaster. These are key since they give users the freedom to place the transmitter almost anywhere around an entertainment center. The free iPhone remote app built by Dijit was the real highlight though. The UI and functionality was incredibly intuitive, and we especially liked that the setup process doesn’t require inputting device model numbers. Instead, users just pick the brand and then test a series of code cycles to see if their components respond. The TV guide and Netflix integration are also points of distinction over competitors — since you can select shows or movies to watch directly from the app. Last but not least, your remote settings can be saved and downloaded to as many devices as you like. To give you a feel for the system, we’ve included plenty of shots of the app’s UI in the gallery below along with more photos the device.

Idapt’s i2+ universal charging dock rejuvenates your Nexus S and iPhone 4… simultaneously
We’ve come a long way since 2008, eh? Not only has the Idapt i2+ seen a massive external makeover compared to the original, but this one supports the simultaneously charging of three mobile / USB devices. The “universal” charging dock ships with a cornucopia of tips, enabling it to juice up a Nexus One, BlackBerry, iPod, iPhone, PSP, GPS system or pretty much any combination of handheld gizmos on the market. Two docking ports are arranged on the top, and a spare USB port allows a third item of your choice to receive new life via a tether. It’ll ship in “an assortment of colors” this spring, but it looks as if pricing won’t be announced until later on. One more look (along with the full PR) is after the break.

Universal remote arrives within a pillow, makes channel surfing hip again
It’s a pillow. And a remote. And if your powers of observation are anywhere near “strong,” you’ve probably deduced by now that you’re looking at a universal remote control… albeit one that’s wrapped within a pillow. We’ve seen similar creations come around in concept form, but leave it to the folks at Brookstone to turn this thing into a reality. Purportedly, this unit can be programmed to work with over 500 devices, and there’s a power-saving auto shutoff feature that’ll definitely be overrode by your incessant squeezing. We wouldn’t count on this thing actually working well, but for $29.95 (in addition to the cost of two AAA batteries, of course), we highly doubt you’ll find a more fashionable, lovable cube of cotton.

XpanD universal 3D glasses now available for pre-order
The lack of inter-brand compatibility is a major annoyance with current 3D glasses — not to mention stands in direct opposition to our fashionable couch potato aesthetic. Luckily, XpanD’s universal 3D glasses are finally available for pre-order on Amazon, even though there’s no word on ship dates. They are however currently priced at $108, which is slightly less than the $125-$150 range quoted by XpanD’s Chief Strategy Officer Ami Dror last spring. That said, no surprise drop in price could justify their PR platitude as “the most anticipated product in the history of 3D.”
