Absolut Unique

Absolut is a brand of premium vodka owned by the French company Pernod Ricard and produced in the Skåne region of Southern Sweden. This autumn, following their continuing trend for special edition bottles, Absolut will launch Absolut Unique, a generative design and manufacturing solution developed in collaboration with Family Business that will randomly create a one-of-a-kind design across each of the 4 million bottles produced through a carefully orchestrated but random mix of 38 colours and 51 pattern types.
“For ABSOLUT UNIQUE, ABSOLUT had to re-engineer its entire production line. It required a complex interaction of human and mechanical elements, and a carefully orchestrated randomness, to achieve the desired end result. Splash guns and colour-generating machines were set up and complex coating, pattern and placement algorithms were programmed in to ensure that no two bottles would be alike. Thirty-five different colours were used, and fifty-one pattern types were applied to the bottles. A striking look was achieved by colour contrasts and a white, mat paper label that features each bottle’s unique number.”

Like many of Absolut’s limited edition ranges the visual resolution and finish of Absolut Unique appears distinctive and well executed. Its mix of paint strokes, splashes and sprays draws on contemporary urban art, 80’s pop culture and graffiti movements with a spontaneity, energy and life that compliments and reflects the context in which vodka is frequently experienced. The organic and almost humanist nature of the detailing contrasts incredibly well with the Swiss modernism and geometry of the brand’s visual identity, structural design and the more traditional cues set by the embossed seal but also their unusual machine generated nature.

Although a largely familiar aesthetic the broad, creative union and utilisation of metallic, pearlesque, neon, gloss, opaque, translucent and matt inks, set across the curved surface of each bottle, delivers an original, rich visual texture and a very clever unisex quality likely to emerge and fluctuate between each of the 4 million bottles. Like a handbag or a pair of trainers the opportunity for consumers to seek out a variation that resonates well with their personal taste is an engaging proposition that boldly and intentionally continues to allow Absolut to blur the line between fashion and consumables, celebrate society’s collective diversity, reflect the culture it exists in and achieve a rather impressive inclusive exclusive duality through mass produced individuality.

Parking spaces transforming into housing units – is that a viable idea we should seriously take into consideration? According to San Francisco-based designer Aaron Cheng, who submitted this interesting idea to this year’s James Dyson Awards, a building that alternates between housing and parking is not only possible, but it can also be a solution to crowding for both people and cars. The Parking + Housing project is this creative designer’s solution to a common problem – “During daytime, the housing units are compressed to create spaces for parking, while at night, the process reverses with parking turning back into living quarters via a pneumatic structure.” Inspired by the growing number of population and vehicles in major urban areas, the designer’s solution spotted on Fatscodesign offers an alternative space utilization that seems to view this problem from behind a unique structure system: “The Pneumatic Shelter is the key in the development. This involves inflating an ETFE skin with air, inflated from the permanent utility module or hand pump. This unique structure system allows the project to transform from living space to parking space and vice verse.” Would you consider sharing your living space with your car?

Unique Kitchen Made From Recycled, Eco-Friendly Paper

Sustainability has been THE buzz word of the past few years and manufacturers have been under increasing pressure to reduce the carbon footprint of the products that they bring to market. Using recycled materials is one way that they have sought to do this. But one company has taken this in a very unexpected direction by producing a kitchen made from recycled, eco-friendly paper. Italian kitchen manufacturer Key Cucine has used PaperStone, an innovative new material composed of recycled paper fiber and non-petroleum-based resins to create the Eco kitchen designed by Alessio Bassan. The original design features a checkerboard modular surface in four different shades suspended on a recessed base. Meticulous attention has been paid to details, such as the PaperStone sink with sunken taps and the board, which provides extra preparation space. The kitchen also benefits from recessed handles making the doors easier to open without interrupting the smooth, clean design.

The steep site occupied by the house was recreated to suit the inhabitant’s needs and wishes and offer them the best possible layout for daily activities. Displaying its beautiful details over as surface of 1,050 square meters, the orange residential construction made of steel is best described by its designers: “The program is based on the development of flexible relationships between diverse inputs of design, such as, materials, program elements, demands of users, dimensional requirements, site peculiarities, Ankara climate and its habitat, architects and engineers involved with the project.

The building is the product of a flexible-systematic process without losing the initial idea. The building design is based on surfaces that develop an exterior-interior space relation between autonomous rooms, and an initial diagram concerning the circulation connecting these rooms. All rooms reflect the specific needs of employers in their design. For instance, dining room is dimensioned with reference to the existing Persia carpet belonging to the users.” Glass and water features were combined to shape a striking outdoor display that unifies the design and participate in creating a fascinating residential property.
