Microsoft starts taking orders for 128GB Surface Pro, $999 gets one shipped on March 1st

Microsoft has been having troubles keeping the 128GB model Surface Pro tablet on virtual and actual store shelves, but it looks like the drought, as promised, is ending. The tablet’s now up for pre-order on the Microsoft Store website with an estimated March 1st ship date. Best Buy will also be receiving shipments of the slate soon and is also willing to take your money now to reserve one. Alas, our friends north of the border in Canada are still without a 128GB Surface purchase option, but at least the folks at the Surface Blog have promised to provide more info on the matter sometime soon. Don’t believe us? Head on down to the source and see for yourself.

[Thanks, Jon]

Switched On: Surface damage

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On surface damage

As Switched On discussed a few weeks ago, and as Microsoft noted in its recent 10-K filing, it is an unavoidable truth that the company getting into the hardware market will cause conflict with its partners. The extent of that conflict, though, depends on many variables and Microsoft can — and must — take steps to ameliorate it.

Samsung ‘Optical Sensor in Pixel’ LCDs rolling out, ready for Surface 2.0

Samsung SUR40
With Samsung’s Microsoft Surface product, the SUR40, already available for pre-order, the company says its 1080p 40-inch “Optical Sensor in Pixel” LCD panels have gone into mass production. Those optical sensors help to more accurately interpret multi-touch input without interrupting display signals, offering a more fluid, interactive experience. Tempered glass overlaying the display supports 176 pounds of load and up to 50 touch points at once, which should be more than enough for a Pacific Giant Octopus or any jerk that leans on your $8K table. While the SUR40 is certainly a showcase device for these panels, it isn’t the only practical application — Samsung says it’s thin enough and light enough to wall-mount, and hopes to see it used by stock brokers, financial analysts and schools.

Apple patent application takes the hard keys out of the keyboard, promises a flat surface solution

Apple’s giving us a patent application peek into its post-PC future, and it looks like hard keys will be so 2008. The recently revelead filing shows off a virtual, flat keyboard concept for Cupertino’s line of non-iOS products that flirts with metal, plastic and glass form factors. Using a combination of piezoelectrics, haptic feedback and acoustic pulse recognition, these prospective designs will be able to detect your finger-pounding surface input. If you’re the fast-typing kind, you’re probably wondering how your digits will recognize the keys sight unseen. Well, there’s a few workarounds for that. In its metal and plastic iterations, Jobs and co. plan to stamp or micro-perforate the layout into place, while their glass counterpart would receive a graphical overlay. The application also promises an LED-lit display for hard to see conditions and the inclusion of capactive sensors to enable multi-touch functions, so you avoid e.e. cummings-style emails. Of course, applications aren’t necessarily indicative of a surefire product, but those interested in tickling their imagination can give the source link a look.

Creative and Versatile Tiles for any Purpose, Surface and Room

Any surface can be revamped with the help of a modern collection of tiles from Dutch designers Peter van der Jagt, Erik Jan Kwakkel and Arnout Visser. Named DTile, the fantastic and versatile set of tiles have unusual features like built in items for everyday use and the possibility of dressing up corners, creating a uniform, uninterrupted tiling system. The tiles come with integrated fixtures like cookbook stands, sockets, ceramic hooks, plug holes or drawers. DTile provides both construction tiles and functional tiles, merging the designs together in a modern and creative way. The designers have one thing in mind: to tile the world: “We have therefore created a series of functional tiles, integrating functionalities in tile work. This enables us to create grids that aren’t disturbed by a sink or a sink stopper, a tap, a cutting board, a wall socket, or a drawer. DTILE can incorporate any function in a tile – and we are open to suggestions to make our range of functional tiles even more versatile. Anything that’s required to tile the world…
