Gorgeous Sense of Style: Luxury Mansion in L.A.

LA Mansion Gorgeous Sense of Style: Luxury Mansion in L.A.

Harmonically combining steel, wood, stone and glass, this spectacular mansion, that impresses with its presence was designed by Jamie Bush. La Cañada Mid-Century is located at the foothills of Sierra Madre, in Los Angeles. Embracing the wonderful landscape, the house was envisioned as a project that focuses on bringing the exterior inside the house. That’s why most of the design elements are inspired or brought from the nature. “The decor is a mix of textured natural, neutral color and a materials palette with select and strategic pops of color throughout for a sense of surprise.”

Table2 Gorgeous Sense of Style: Luxury Mansion in L.A.

Indeed, there are elements that seem to complete the “natural touch”,  without disturbing the order. The burst of colours, such as yellow in the kitchen or burgundy red in the living room, give a fresh and modern look to this “royal-like” mansion. The floor-to-ceiling windows invite the landscape inside. A smooth transition between the environments is therefore created. Cozy and inviting, La Cañada Mid-Century is exactly what you need when you feel the hectic lifestyle overwhelms you. The landscape is absolutely staggering, especially in wintertime, when nearby the fire place, you sit on the furry, tender carpets and you admire the nature’s wonders.

Nola’s Mexican Style Salsa

“NOLA’S is a local startup fresh foods company. MDG was tasked with creating an original brand image & identity for NOLA’S. Our client had a vision, “Think June Cleaver meets a Vargas pin-up.” That in mind, we worked with illustrator Mark Stutzman to craft the face of the brand, the lovely Ms. Nola. From there, we created an original logo mark and packaging concept and NOLA’S Fresh Foods was off.”

Sustainable Style : Rebuilding or Renovating Your Home with Reclaimed Wood

reclaimed wood article freshome Sustainable Style : Rebuilding or Renovating Your Home with Reclaimed Wood

I first talked about reclaimed wood, briefly, in my piece 10 Eco-friendly ways to Renovate your Home. Now, on the heels of Hurricane Sandy many of us are looking to rebuild or renovate our homes after suffering severe damage and devastation. At Freshome we are dedicated to giving you the best information and sharing our ideas we have with you. We are also passionate about Green Building and recycled materials as viable and sound options. Reclaimed wood is one such option. Also known as barnwood, it is lumber that has primarily originated from old barns, factories and warehouses. Although less traditional structures which include boxcars, coal mines and wine barrels are often utilized as well. The use of reclaimed, antique lumber is growing in popularity as use for home decoration and home building. This weathered, recycled wood has varying degrees of texture, thickness, nail holes and saw marks.  These “imperfections” give each piece of wood character and distinction.  The inconsistencies and imperfections found in the wood offer both a uniqueness as well as a sense of history.

Reclaimed timber is environmentally friendly and is considered a green building material. It is a strong and durable choice. By opting to use these recycled woods, our efforts immediately affect our environment by preserving our natural resources and lessening the burden on our landfills. Another very appealing aspect of recycled wood, is the cost, which can be up to 50% less than new wood that has been milled, marked and stained to look old. I think it is time to give serious thought to barnwood.

Reclaimed Garage, Barn or Home Office

The elegant yet rustic look of reclaimed wood is a perfect option for those looking to build or renovate an existing garage or other small edifice while keeping spending intact. As reclaimed lumber is incredibly strong and has already been weathered there is no wait time to achieve this popular look. Furthermore there is no need to paint this type of wood unless, of course, you prefer the look of painted wood. The weathered appearance of the lumber lends itself beautifully and seamlessly to your existing landscape.

 Mirror, Mirror on the wall…

In this traditional yet contemporary living room, the mirror made from reclaimed lumber, adds a rustic charm that seemingly appeals to those who appreciate both the old and the new. Smaller items, such as this full-length mirror, can be easily re-created by those of you with a handy and crafty side. Reclaimed lumber accessories look well in any setting and in any environment.

Put your feet up and stay a while…

Due to it’s rich color, reclaimed wood adds an element of warmth to your surroundings. Each piece of wood has a history and tells a story. The dents and nicks seen on most items made from reclaimed wood contribute to their uniqueness and make them truly one of a kind. Because reclaimed wood is so strong, it makes for a perfect choice when decorating with young children at home as it’s virtually indestructible. You’ll not have to worry about little scratches and dings as you would with antique pieces. The coffee table, as seen above, gives the room a warm and handsome elegance.

Watch Your Step!

Reclaimed wood floors adds a wonderful touch to any room, but in the kitchen, where we tend to spend much of our time on our feet, wood floors are not only visually appealing, but as a soft material they are therefore gentler to your feet and back than stone surfaces. Reclaimed wood tends to be denser and stronger than its freshly cut counterpart. Its strength makes it virtually indestructible, as we know that things tend to fall and get dropped on to kitchen floor all the time. Unlike some surfaces, like certain stones or tile, wood floors won’t chip. Look for wide plank options, and for those of you who live in colder climates, wood floors work wonderfully with radiant heating

A Chip off the Old Reclaimed Butcher’s Block…

Reclaimed wood makes for a wonderful work surface in your kitchen. Smooth, thick and durable it will sand up to spills, splatters, and bangs. A perfect surface for pounding beef, chopping vegetables (though please do so on a cutting board), or rolling out cookie dough. You needn’t worry about placing hot and heavy pans on them either. I think, perhaps, there may not be a more perfect kitchen surface. If your tastes are more modern and streamlined, reclaimed wood works wonderfully when paired with other surfaces such as marble, granite and stainless steel.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a reclaimed wood ceiling!

Sturdy, rustic, natural, reclaimed wood ceilings give this room a relaxed elegance. They add warmth and character devoid in many ordinary ceilings. The sheer strength of this wood lends itself perfectly to any support beam. Reclaimed wood is so versatile  in appearance that it lends itself perfectly to so many styles from modern to traditional to classic.

 A (reclaimed) Stairway to Heaven…

Reclaimed woods look wonderful in stairwells in any home. The dark, well-worn wood stairs are well suited to any home from contemporary, traditional to farmhouse or antique. Reclaimed wood is so appealing on its own, in it’s original state, that it’s rarely ever repainted. After all, why cover up all that history and charm? In many cases you will be able to learn where your wood originated. It could have been from the side of a barn, or it could have been from the bottom of a wine barrel. Oh what stories you can possibly tell your guests as you give them tours of your home!

Everything Including the Bathroom Sink!

Incredibly creative and unique, this clever use of reclaimed wood gives this bathroom countertop a rich and warm, rustic yet modern appeal. Resistant to spills, strong and beautiful, reclaimed wood countertops need not only be limited to the kitchen. The uses for barn wood are limitless!

 Shut the Barn Door!

Barn doors are popping up all over the place. Their rustic simplicity can be incorporated into any design preference and and living space. Painted yellow, this reclaimed barn door not only adds a pop of color but a sense of charm and whimsy instead. This style of door is clearly trending at the moment.  Unlike hinged doors, these sliding ones require and take up very little space. The doors are easily mounted on special hardware.

These doors can act as room dividers, or elegantly cover up unsightly appliances such as washing machines and dryers. When placed along a kitchen wall, they elegantly and discreetly conceal items that are commonly stored in pantries such as baking supplies and spices. These doors offer a perfect solution to those areas where space for swing doors is limited.

In the hood…

Rebecca Reynolds owner of New Canaan Kitchens sought to use reclaimed wood throughout this kitchen vignette in her showroom.  Here we see a mix of reclaimed antique wood floor from the pine flooring, to the cabinetry to very the clever creation of the hood made which was made from from antique cypress. An elegant, modern working kitchen is given personal and historic touches with the inclusion of the restored wood.

I hope I’ve given you some clever and creative ways to incorporate reclaimed, or barnwood, into your home renovation project.

Wellness Centre With an “Ayurvedic” Style: Dhara by Alberto Apostoli

apostoli B 96851 Wellness Centre With an Ayurvedic Style: Dhara by Alberto Apostoli

We recently received a project consisting of a modern wellness center developed by Studio Alberto Apostoli and located within the Belfiore Park
Hotel, on the Venetian side of Lake Garda, Italy. By opening a new wellness center spread along an entire floor of the hotel and named the Dhara Wellness, the hotel is given an ayurvedic dimension. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term which can be literally translated as “knowledge of life”. Here is an excerpt from the official press release we were sent: “The project aimed to create a balance between the classical elements of the SPA by carefully studying spaces, forms, materials, colors and lights. By taking advantage of the local materials, the particularities of the location and a natural spring that was discovered during the construction, the SPA obtains a sensorial environment that is alive with every construction detail and material that was specially designed for it. Following a characteristic horizontal element made with bamboo canes that run along the entire floor leading to the SPA, one enters, or rather “filters in”, a socializing room that is neutral and contemporary. A final element is the large olive tree that was placed within the structure during the intervention.

apostoli DSC0067 Wellness Centre With an Ayurvedic Style: Dhara by Alberto Apostoli

The geometrical and emotional core of the SPA is a basin of water that is constantly replenished by the natural spring whose waters are utilized almost as a lining as it flows directly onto the bare stone. Within the basin, there is a shower that is made by a particular element that is the local stone and a special Kneipp treatment composed by single pools that are also made in the local stone. The sauna, another strong element of the center, is created entirely in stone and is characterized by a large glass partition for the unusual transfer to the basin of water. Alongside the sauna is a vapor bath, covered by a special mosaic in resin whose parts “digitally” recreate the intertwined branches of the lemon trees. The relax area is positioned at the end of the center and offers a magnificent view of the lake that is only a couple of meters away”.[ Photography by Maurizio Marcato]

Mallorcan Style Townhouse Featuring Fab Views From Every Room

Mallorcan Style Townhouse Mallorcan Style Townhouse Featuring Fab Views From Every Room

This exceptional interior design can inspire you to see what your home needs in order to look like a Mallorcan style townhouse. Featured today is the sun flooded residence located in Mallorca – a home that was inspired by the inhabitant’s love for the weather here. Travelling for many years from Sweden to Mallorca, the couple currently living here decided that it was time to move to the island and enjoy its magnificent array of features. There were four people involved in shaping this home: architect Alexander Von Waberer, interior designer Isabel Jover, surveyor Juan Carlos Sopena and engineer José Fermoselle. The brief included concise needs: a comfortable home away from stressful urban developments, with a modern architecture and impressive views from every room. Estudio Dai 10 managed to create a personalized space that encompasses austere decor and lacks unnecessary ornaments. High quality materials were used throughout, and the villa was adapted to the rugged terrain – creating a successful collection of interior and exterior spaces that remain connected by a multitude of terraces and windows. Wouldn’t you like to move to Mallorca, too?

How to Outfit your Couch with Pillows that Match your Design Style

Have you ever noticed that pillows on a couch are like the icing on a cake, and if they aren’t perfect the couch looks odd? While many people don’t think much about throw or decorative pillows, they accessorize your couch and make it look complete.  Depending on your individual design style, or style of couch, choosing pillows can be a challenge. Here are tips to outfit your sofa with pillows that match your design style and ensure a well-put together seating area.
pillow eclectic How to Outfit your Couch with Pillows that Match your Design Style

  • Let your design style shine through: In past years, pillows were thought to only be a place to carry out the same material color as the rest of the couch, and were more for comfort than an accent. In today’s interiors pillows should reflect you and your design style. From eclectic variations of different patterns and colors to varying sizes and shapes, let yourself show through! If you decide to use an eclectic approach, consider using colors within the same color palette or choose a fabric and pull colors from it, so the look is still harmonized but unique to your home.

  • Add drama with your pillows: Accent pillows are a beautiful way to add a statement without saying a thing. For dark colored couches and sumptuous fabrics, consider the less-is-more approach and pick a few dramatic pillows with a bold pattern, subtle details, or an eye-popping complimentary color to the couch. If you’re looking for a wow factor, pair up colors that are opposite of each other to draw the eye to the couch immediately.

  • How much does your couch want to say: For some homes, the couch is the main act of the room and it doesn’t want to compete with any other piece of furniture. If you have an awe-inspiring couch that doesn’t need competition, consider using understated pillows that will add comfort, but will blend into the couch and it’s surroundings. Remember, your style of your room is up to you, decide what role you want your couch to play, and then have your pillows follow suit.

  • Share your creativity: While many pillows are designer labeled and use the finest of textiles and ornamentation, some pillows need not be. In fact, if you are a crafts person and enjoy making your own pillows, your couch is the perfect place to showcase them! From creative knitted pillows to ones that resemble boulders or stones, your couch is where you relax and entertain guests. Have your pillows tell something about you as well as your home. The couch doesn’t always have to look like it’s in a museum!

pillow retro e1308394851308 How to Outfit your Couch with Pillows that Match your Design Style

Creative uses of throw or decorative pillows on your couch can alternate, and doesn’t have to stay static. Especially for seasonal ideas, consider changing them out for holidays, formal occasions, or just because. The beauty of pillows is that they can be affordable, or they can be luxurious. Either way, it gives you a chance to bring in a new aesthetic into your living room, without having to buy a whole new couch! Use these helpful tips in letting your pillows speak volumes about your couch and you.

Design Style: Mediterranean Inspired Home Ideas

If you are drawn to old world home interiors that feature warm textures, and blue decorative accents that remind you of the sea and sky, you will probably be drawn to Mediterranean interiors. Also termed, “Spanish modern”, this style is indicative of a style that can be extremely formal or it can rustic and casual. The beauty of this design style is it transforms your home into one that could fit into any Mediterranean country: Italy, Greece or even Spain. If you love terra cotta Spanish tiles on your roof and clay fired ceramic tiles throughout your home, here are some tips for bringing more Mediterranean inspired interiors to life in your home.

med color e1307727773123 Design Style: Mediterranean Inspired Home Ideas

  • Colors that mimic nature: One of the draws to Mediterranean culture, vacationing, and architecture are the beautiful colors that stem from nature. The evidence is in the native clothing, textiles, and interiors, and the appeal to bring it into your home is obvious! From the deep blues of the sky and ocean, to the deep terra cotta warm tones of the Earthenware and walls of traditional homes. Even glimpses of lavender, yellow, and hues of deep rusts to creamy tan and beige mimic nature. Try painting your walls, planter pots outside, or your furniture in these Mediterranean inspired colors.

med modern e1307728065314 Design Style: Mediterranean Inspired Home Ideas

  • Natural finishes with rustic appeal: Whether you have the exposed wooden beams overhead in your ceiling, or you choose to tile your entryway and courtyard area of your home. Mediterranean interiors are infamous for having expansive areas of mosaic tile, quarry and other rustic yet modern finishes in their detailing. In modern day, you can see many floor tile manufacturers have mimicked the traditional style tile flooring by offering varying shades or hues of color in the same line to give that ‘old world’ aesthetic. This appeal is well sought after, and the more random and natural you leave your finishes, the more authentic Mediterranean style you will create in your space. Bring these tile ideas into your mirrors, tabletops, outdoor furniture, and bathrooms for a look that is “old world” all the way. From the interiors to your exterior, Mediterranean design style efforts  can be felt from your doorstep, all the way into your home.

med exterior e1307728731688 Design Style: Mediterranean Inspired Home Ideas

  • Texture and patterns: Traditional Mediterranean homes utilize the use of texture and pattern visually and physically. From ornate patterns in textiles, to intricate scrolling and inlaid forms in furniture adorned with ornamentation. Texture is also experienced through wall, and ceiling applications. From stucco to plaster, many of these faux techniques can be duplicated in your home. Visit your local home improvement store and see what faux finishing painting classes are available. Many paint manufacturers have faux painting kits that use glazes, and topcoats to bring Mediterranean textured walls into your guest bathroom, entry foyer or master bedroom.

  • Embracing the outdoors and entertaining: Sharing nature and camaraderie amongst family and friends are synonymous with Mediterranean culture. They embrace entertaining and love for their homes to be comfortable for all who are invited. To recreate Mediterranean outdoor spaces, ensure comfortable and plentiful seating. Wrought iron and ornamental metals are traditional, but modern Mediterranean use many of same metals but with more streamlining in the form of the furniture. Whichever is your style, open up your interiors to the outdoors and blur the lines between indoors and out. Bring in beautiful plants, and a pool, and your outdoors will mimic the Mediterranean lifestyle.

Who wouldn’t want to create a Mediterranean oasis in their homes? With the subtle cues from a relaxing old world villa to an elaborate Italian getaway spot that you vacationed years ago, ‘Spanish Modern’ is a look that everyone loves. Use these tips to transport your home to the Mediterranean in just a few simple decorative moves. With some do it yourself faux painting techniques and beautifully painted walls with bounds of color. You will be amazed how the Mediterranean design style transcends time into your home.

Style and Glamour of a Hollywood Home: Sunset Plaza Residence

Sunset Plaza Residence was designed by David Thompson and Kevin Southerland from Assembledge Architects and is located above the Sunset Strip in the famous Hollywood Hills. Just another proof that some people really don’t hold back when it comes to building their crib, this abode seems to have it all: an impressive and uncommon architecture, an infinity pool that dazzles the senses, floor to ceiling windows and to top it all, dramatic panoramic views of Los Angeles. Defying our common perception of a comfortable home, this 5,000 sq ft residence is built in a contemporary fashion and is opened to the surrounding landscape due to movable glass walls. Moreover, the L-shape ensures good natural lighting in every room of the house. This goes to show that aside from having a jaw-dropping appearance, Sunset Plaza also has sustainable features. The interiors are imposing and breathtaking, with a layout that proves high-class tastes while in the same time allowing the home to breathe. What do you think? Impressive enough for the Hollywood Hills?
