Unconventional Ways To Extend The Storage Space by YOY Design
The floating book support and the book-shaped flower pot are just two creative ways of extending the storage space or simply spread some “magic” around your home. Presented at Milan’s Design Week 2013, the two items mentioned above have two different functions: create an impression on whoever ends up seeing them and yes, here’s a more practical one, enhance the storage space. The first object presented by the Japanese design studio YOY is called “Book” but don’t be fooled by the name because in reality it’s a very elegant and minimalist flower pot. The fun thing is that it can perfectly blend with other books creating the illusion that this is just another regular book in your library with a very elucidating title though “The Life of Plants”. “By opening the cover page it stands stably and you can see the soil inside.”
The other showcased item is called “Extend”. Even more intriguing than Book, Extend is a serious matter of illusionism giving you the feeling that you are watching a pair of books floating. Extend “can be fixed to a tabletop by a clamp and the length can be adjusted as you like.”

Ubuntu One reaches Mac in beta, completes the cloud storage circle
For all of the many directions Ubuntu One’s cloud storage has gone, it hasn’t headed the Mac’s way. Official clients have been the province of Linux devotees (naturally, Ubuntu is recommended) and their Windows friends across the aisle. A newly available Mac beta puts all three major desktop platforms on an even keel, very literally — the OS X port is almost identical to what you’d get in Linux or Windows, including a few rough points where other interface concepts clash. Still, the Ubuntu One test build has a handy Mac-specific menu bar item, and it’s one of the few cloud options that will natively support both the Ubuntu box in your den and the MacBook Pro in your bag. Grab your copy at the source link if you can deal with a few unfinished elements.

Customizable Steel Wall-Mounted Display And Storage

Italian accessories company AK47Design have designed yet another beautiful piece – named Tubola. After seeing the Zero Fireplace, the Thor Fireplace and the fun Flex Firewood Storage, the design company strikes again with a modern storing solution that is both simple and elegant. The wall-mounted shelves featuring a round shape are perfect for storing or displaying your belongings with style. Their steel bodies are available in three sizes that can be combined to shape your desired wall-mounted composition. Two elegant finishes in white and black ensure that your walls will attract attention and convey a feeling of modernity and comfortable customization. In the designer’s words, “Tubola welcomes everyone in its round mess. Suspended from the wall, its elements are approaching and receding, overhang and retract, turn, and form precise or irregular combinations that are always different.” Supplied in a ready-to assemble kit, Tubola will be on your walls in no time.

IBM stores bits on arrays of atoms, shrinks magnetic storage to the scientific limit
IBM’s Almaden Research Center is filled with some of the best and brightest minds in the world, and its researchers just released new findings that detail how just how far IBM has come in the realm of magnetic storage. Andreas Heinrich is leading the team at Big Blue that figured out how to create atomic storage based on the fact that atoms of ferromagnetic material align their spins in one direction — so the ability to control the spin direction is what’s needed to make such minature memory possible. Heinrich and his crew were able to accomplish the trick by supercooling 12 atoms to four degrees kelvin (-452 fahrenheit), and arranging them using an electron microscope in such a away that nonvolatile storage became possible. As this is only a proof of concept, we won’t be seeing atomic memory at, say, CES any time soon, but you can dig into the deep science behind the breakthrough at the source link below.

Created by Korean designer living in Finland Jiyoung Seo, the SAI Modular Wall Storage Unit raises some questions about the way we use to store our belongings. Spotted on MonkeyZen, the interesting storage unit is made out of small silicone tubes that apparently have an interesting feel when you touch them. The silicone blocks can be arranged in different ways to accommodate different functions. Some cubes change color, acting as fun blocks that can be personalized according to your wishes. You can store books, magazines, papers, notes or other stuff and keep them on the boards by rearranging the silicone blocks. “The grip of the cubes will keep your things safe and tidy. You can change your imagination take flight and modify it according to your mood state. It can turn crazy modern art box or an organized platform” – this is how the designer describes her work.

Precious Storage Mirror Sheltering Fashion Accesories

Designed by Céline Merhand and Anaïs Morel of Les M Design Studio, this fascinating storage mirror named Precious makes you wonder how come you don’t already have one. As described by the design duo, “the mirror unfolds to reveal a colorful system for the organization of jewelry and fashion accessories. “Precious” offers a pull-out bar with hooks to neatly hang necklaces and earrings. A set of removable boxes can accommodate bracelets, rings and the smallest items. The boxes in different shapes and colors, can be playfully assembled in multiple variations, creating an ever-changing setting.” Its simplicity cleverly hides the storage compartments while displaying a minimalist shape and curvacious design lines. Colorful drawers and pull-out hooks for jewelry make this item perfect for modern girls.

Practical Storage System Hidden Understairs

Chiswick Woodworking Company completed an interesting and highly practical project consisting of several storage units that can be pulled out from under the stairs. This idea is not new, we presented quite a few similar projects here on Freshome. However, this time the finish is so cleverly executed and the units so well hidden, that we thought we had to share it with you for inspiration. In the photos below you have four different “lockers” and each of them can be accessed individually. We also appreciate the design of the storage devices: each of them futures diverse solutions, for the smallest objects and even large boxes, clothes, shoes and so on. The pulling mechanism is simple; this way anyone can have easy access to the items inside the “stairs” (children too). How do you make the most of your under-stairs space?

Kingston Wi-Drive wireless storage for iOS review (video)

With nearly 350,000 apps and counting, the iPhone‘s maximum capacity of 32GB doesn’t allow you to even scratch the surface of the App Store’s catalog. Throw in an HD movie, some TV episodes, hundreds of tracks and a few thousand photos, and you’ll be chewing through those available bytes in no time. Most manufacturers compensate this limitation by including a microSD slot for additional storage, but not Apple — you’re stuck with that original capacity until you’re ready to upgrade to a new device. Luckily, for those who need more storage now and don’t mind paying for it, AirStash, Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite, and now Kingston’s ultra-slim Wi-Drive allow you to boost gigs without upgrading, or switching to another platform. None of these pocket servers come without compromise, however — you’ll be spending over $100 for even the most basic option, while adding yet another device to your portable mix.
