Ask Engadget: best robot cleaner for stone tile floors?
We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Anthony, who needs some robotic help keeping his stone floors clean. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
“We have stone tile floors in the kitchen and two kids. What wet floor cleaning robot would help us keep the floor clean, navigate the kitchen and handle the uneven stone floor tiles and grooves?”
We love original and different questions like this, the more original and different the better, so let’s help this gentleman out. It’s the old story of the high-tech being flustered by the stone age, but what’s the solution? Is it the iRobot Scooba, with its squeegee apparatus tucked underneath, or something else? Why not share your considerable experiences in the comments below.

Manipulating Natural Materials Into Suspended Stone Installations

A wide arrangement of suspended stones make the subject of a surprising installation. Korean artist Jaehyo Lee used natural stones found in nature to construct a different arrangement than we’re used to – three dimensional constructions of manipulated nature that surprise the extensive work load leading to a nature-based, man-manipulated reality. Working with different materials – such as stone, wood, steel and nail, the artist creates interpretation of the world around us – capturing the essence of each material in a series of interesting installations. This Suspended Stone Installation includes cylinder and rounded shapes, arranged to shape tunnel or ball-like compositions - all featuring natural, non-manipulated stones hanging by threads from the ceiling and contouring these captivating shapes.

Stone Houses by Leroy Street Studio
Leroy Street Studio designed two “Stone Houses” for a mother and daughter on a property in
Long Island, New York.
.
Description from the designers:
This weekend retreat sits on a flat, open 12 acre site in eastern Long Island. The clients, a mother and daughter, requested a low-maintenance residence that incorporated Westchester granite and great expanses of glass to take in views of the property. LSS introduced dry-stack stone walls to unify exterior and interior spaces and to knit the compound together. The walls, linked by water features, provide a unifying texture and distinguish the private, southern-oriented arrival side of the buildings from the northern-facing curtain walls.
The mothers’ house is split into public and private wings by a gallery overlooking a sculpture court. The public wing is a singular volume subdivided by wrapping roofs: the lower roof creates an intimate dining area and screened porch, and the upper one defines the entry vestibule and living room.
The daughter’s house is composed of perpendicular roof planes which over-sail the stone walls; and a taught box of oak glu-lam portal frames wrapped in a continuous skin of louvers. The two buildings together create an abstract composition of planar materials which redefine the property as a series of internal and external courtyards spaces for the family.

Quality Wood And Stone Details Shaping A Polish Apartment

Trusting the interior designers you work with is very important – something incredible can result from understanding the needs and wishes of a client and then designing a residential space that can accommodate their lifestyle while constructing a new setting for their daily activities. The Marina Apartment 1 is just that kind of place – a renovated apartment in Warsaw’s Mokotow district designed according to a few guidelines – a cozy, modern quality home, displaying many wood details and a beautiful sea fish aquarium – and a creative set of minds. After enjoying the Eko Park 3 apartment, this is the second residential loft part of Polish Exit Interior Design Studio‘s portfolio that caught our attention. The photos made by Olo Rutkowski present us with carefully selected and designed details, emphasized by the client’s constant search for quality. In order to have a comfortable, contemporary home suited for this family, the best firms working with wood, stone and other elements were selected and the result is magnificent.

This is how the designers explain their work on this project: “These high standards gave us a lot satisfaction while we were working on the project and later on during its implementation. After accepting and adapting some inconvenient construction elements, within one year the interior was created for the family with two teenagers. Downstairs -the area used during a day – there is the living room, the dining room, the kitchen, the toilet, the guest room and the entrance hall. Upstairs – the area used at night – there are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and the sauna and on the second floor there is the entertainment zone with the film projector and Hi-Fi equipment. The final effect is a combination of the best quality materials and work of top craftsmen – to fulfill particular requirements of the client. Therefore, we used material such as : American Nut and Ebony wood and natural stony elements made of Onyx, Blanco Statuario, Nero Asoluto or Trawertino Navona. After one year of work, our project and its final version was fully approved by our client with great satisfaction on both sides. ”
