Spotify for iOS gets a much-appreciated interface makeover

Spotify for iOS gets its muchneeded interface makeover

Spotify gave its Android app a very overdue interface overhaul last year. The iOS version wasn’t in quite as dire straits, but we’d still call today’s redesign a long-needed modernization that pulls out some of the clutter. Its 0.6 update mostly brings in useful concepts from the Android version, including the always-on Now Playing strip and the seemingly inescapable navigation sidebar. The update also solves a handful of stand-out flaws, such as reflecting the right track on the lock screen — about time, really. Listeners will need a Premium subscription for more than just radio, but everyone in Spotify-supported countries can grab the update today.

Spotify takes Facebook’s Timeline feature to insane extremes

Image

Worried that Facebook’s new Timeline feature is going to offer up too much information? Don’t worry, whatever roller coaster ride your relationship status updates might be, you’ve got nothing on Spotify. The music streamer is offering up 1,000-odd years of music history on its Facebook page, reaching back to 1,000AD, which was apparently a big year for organum lovers.

Spotify releases preview app for BlackBerry users, but not all of them

BlackBerry users haven’t had a whole lot to celebrate in recent days, but at least they now have Spotify. Today, the Swedish startup unveiled a preview version of its music streaming app, available to download from its Previews page. At this point, the app is compatible with the 9780 Bold, 9700 Bold, 9300 Curve, 9000 Bold and 8520 Curve handsets, though the Torch 9800 has been left in the cold. It’s also worth noting that the service only supports GSM networks (no CDMA, as of yet) and requires a Premium subscription of $10 per month. No word yet on when Spotify will arrive on App World, or whether it’ll add extra support when it does, but early birds can grab their worm at the source link, below.

[Thanks, Daniel]

BBM Music gets official for BlackBerry owners lusting after Spotify

Nothing warms our hearts quite like the thought of corporate suits and government workers pumping out the tunes of Iris DeMent and Amy Martin as they scurry throughout their busy days. As we’ve previously speculated, a new service for BlackBerry Messenger — dubbed BBM Music — has now become real official. For $5 per month, users may keep up to 50 songs in their personal library, which is kinda reminiscent of the wistful days filled with 128MB MP3 players. Fortunately, it gets better. A social component allows you to add BBM Music friends, which gives you access to their current 50 songs, too — and serves as a real incentive to grow your social circle. Once you get bored of your jam selection, up to 25 songs per month can be swapped out for new ones, and your current library can be stored locally on the handset. The new service begins today in closed beta for residents of the US, Canada and the UK, but more countries will be added down the road. Curious if yours made the list? Just hop the break for the full PR to find out.

Spotify reported to have 175,000 paid-up Americans, valued at $1.1 beeellion

Seems like America’s doors are still wide open to new musical immigrants, because Spotify’s stateside foray has just boosted its overall valuation to $1.1 billion. That’s based on its two most recent investment rounds, which racked up another $100 million from new and old investors who are clearly convinced that the streaming platform can carve out a niche between existing rivals like Rhapsody and new entrants like Google Music and iCloud. Meanwhile, AllThingsD are reporting figures from an unnamed source who says that the London-based company now has 1.4 million US subscribers, of which 175,000 are coughing up $10 per month for premium features like mobile access. If accurate, that equates to a conversion rate of 12.5-percent — not quite as high as the 15-percent it achieved in Zamunda Europe, but still impressive.

Spotify announces new limits for free service, hopes you’ll consider its premium options

No, it’s still not saying anything about the eventual US launch, but Spotify is now causing a minor ruckus across the pond, where it’s just announced some changes to the free version of the music streaming service. The timeline for the changes varies depending on when you signed up, but the short of it is that users will have six months of access to the free service as it is now, after which they’ll face some stricter limits on how much they can listen to. That includes a total of just ten hours of listening time each month, and the ability to listen to individual songs no more than five times. Of course, the obvious goal there is to get more folks to sign up for its Premium or Unlimited services, which the company notes remain unchanged.
