Inspired by the polygonal shape of minerals found in nature, Spanish architect Ramon Esteve has designed the Faz daybed for VONDOM. The resulting outdoor furniture piece mixes an elegant design with a practical ability to protect its user from harmful sun rays. Moreover, the lounge chair is equipped with wheels, making it easy to move from one place to another and create a versatile relaxation platform for sunbathing. Just switch the daybed around in order to get an optimum amount of sunlight!

The project also makes use of a hydraulic system, allowing its users to open and close it when not in use. A light top translucent fabric acts as a large protective umbrella. By connecting smartphone and bluetooth technology to the built-in speakers, you can play your favorite music by the pool. For a general idea on how the daybed works, have a look at the video placed at the end of the post!

Behringer announces OMNI series AirPlay speakers and connecting receiver amps

Behringer announces OMNI series, brings your legacy gear to the AirPlay party

Behringer made a bit of a splash as CES last year with its oversized iPhone dock, this year it’s keeping things a little more front-room friendly. Launching its new OMNI system, the audio maker hopes to bring a little AirPlay magic to your house, without excluding some of your legacy hardware. The system consists of modular elements that let you add your passive speakers into the mix, as well as work together as a whole. More specifically, the OMNI SP3 and SP5i units are all-in-one 2.1 systems, and there’s a dedicated subwoofer too. But, if you don’t have or want their own breed, you can bring in your own. The OMNI Amp is a 2 x 40W stereo amplifier and AirPlay receiver that lets you play your music with your existing passive bookshelf or floor-mounted gear, and active speakers can be looped into the AirPlay party with the OMNI link box. The speakers are provisionally set to cost $249 (for the SP3i) and $349 (for the SP5i and sub), while the amp and link boxes will likely set you back $199 and $129 respectively. No word on the official launch date, but head on over to the press release for more info.

Call For Speakers & Save The Date: The Dieline Package Design Conference San Francisco

Brand strategies are now being built from the package outward – but a major shift happening now is towards the package design architecting all brand touch points based on the brand expression centering in the package design.

Brands, and designers are beginning to understand the value of starting with the package first. The Dieline Package Design Conference 2013 will show package designers how to extend the perception of their expertise and how to vocalize and be more articulate about what their design means to their brand.

We want to teach package designers to be better at considering the role of design in improving sales of a product, and to create meaningful differentiation. There are lots of beautiful designs out there, but not many are reinventing the perceptions of product benefits or paying off on shifting, emerging cultural ideology. We would like to change that.

The Dieline Package Design Conference 2013 will give package designers the language and tools to convince higher ups that their design is truly communicating to the brand target. We will elevate the role of package designers beyond craftsmanship discussions, and have more talks about becoming more influential and in demand, and how to become industry leaders.

Our goal is to go beyond presentations about geeking out on typography or what colors are in this year; The Dieline Conference 2013 will take a larger role of elevating the role of the package design and the package designer.

Interested in speaking at, sponsoring, exhibiting, or have questions about The Dieline Package Design Conference 2013?

Please contact Andrew Gibbs for more information at andrew@thedieline.com.

The Dieline Package Design Conference will take place on June 23-26 in San Francisco, CA.

Phorus PS1 speakers and PR1 receiver add some Android-powered WiFi audio to your home (video)

Phorus PS1 speakers and PR1 receiver add some Androidpowered WiFi audio to your home

It’s HiFi, over WiFi. Got that? Now cross your fingers and repeat that three times, lest you forget exactly what the Phorus PS1 speaker and PR1 receiver allow you to do. So it’s a WiFi speaker and receiver combo? Well, almost. There’s also an Android app that ties it all together. Load it up on your phone, or whatever Android you choose, and it’ll sniff out all the (90dB) Phorus speakers you have. You can use multiple with one device, or separate speakers with separate phones — and stream your music wirelessly around your pad. Just in case, there is also Bluetooth and USB connectivity, if you want to keep your options open. The receiver essentially lets you convert any old HiFi into a wireless player, meaning you can bypass the conical speakers completely should you wish to do so. You can get ‘em now, with the PS1s weighing in at $199 a pop, and $149 for the PR1s. Forgotten that rhyming mantra from the top? Cue the video after the break to remind you.

Opalum’s Flow 1010 TV speakers sport ‘minimalist floating’ design, get priced at £1,649

Opalum's Flow 1010 TV speakers sport 'minimalist floating' design, get priced at 1,649

We’ve certainly encountered a fair share of interesting speakers in our time, albeit most of them have had a different focus than Opalum’s new Flow 1010s. How so? It’s simple, really: these aren’t going to be known for their Bluetooth capabilities, oddly-shaped design or even being portable. Instead, Opalum’s hoping to take the living room by surprise with its “floating” aesthetics and patented Actisonic and Actiline digital audio tech — which, apparently, has taken decades of academic research to accomplish and, in the end, offers reverse filtering algorithms alongside state-of-the-art aluminum drivers that allow the Flow 1010 to have “control of the air movement.” Now don’t let the minimalist looks fool you into thinking these will come cheap, as the starting price point is a whopping £1,649 (around $2,700) — though, if it makes it any better, that does take into account an included “hub” and an RF touch remote. Be sure to read over the PR below, where you can find out where’s the nearest place to snag a set of Flow 1010 speakers for yourself.

NXP’s new audio chip pumps up the volume for mobile device speakers

NXP's new audio chip pumps up the volume for mobile devices speakers

Dutch company NXP — best known for it’s NFC solutions — introduced a new audio chip today that’s set to significantly improve the sound quality of the micro-speakers commonly built into mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The TFA9887 integrated circuit combines NXP’s CoolFlux audio DSP, a class-D amplifier with current sensing and a DC-to-DC converter to boost the output level of micro-speakers up to five times (up to 2.6W RMS) without damaging the driver. Class-D amplifiers are highly efficient and, when combined with a DC-to-DC converter, provide a strong and clear signal regardless of battery level. With current sensing, the chip uses feedback from the driver to optimize power delivery, allowing micro speakers to provide louder, richer sound with deeper, tighter bass over the entire lifetime of a mobile device. Are you ready to turn it up to 11? Check out the full PR after the break.

Elegant Natural Speakers Displaying Porcelain and Wooden Elements [Video]

Natural Speakers Elegant Natural Speakers Displaying Porcelain and Wooden Elements [Video]The Natural Speakers are the exquisite contemporary decorative and functional items I would love to have in my home. Their porcelain speaker casing provides a clear resonance and mellow sound and visually dominates the attention. The sound that each porcelain casing emits is strictly verified during production: “Amplified inside the ceramic and wood transmission construction, the sound gains a slight echo, creating a natural feeling of resonance, resembling the distinct flair of an acoustic instrument right in front of you.” Each speaker is assembled by hand and carefully tied together. Created by Studio Joon&Jun, the speakers display simple punctured porcelain volumes with a base made from neatly stacked wood parts. Look below to see the natural speaker concept illustration and a video of the manufacturing and testing for great sound process. The creators of this amazing decorative speakers explains how they came up with the idea:”Whereas a lot of speakers are constructed to produce a rather fat bass and sharp high tones, we felt the sound was kind of stuck inside the speakers, missing a natural vibe and ambiance. During the development of the ‘the natural speaker’ we discovered the great properties of porcelain as a speaker casing, providing a clear resonance and mellow sound.”
