Modern Countryside Residence in South Korea: Living Knot

architecture living knot house polymur Modern Countryside Residence in South Korea: Living Knot

Polymur Architecture have recently completed the development of a highly modern residence, situated in a rural agricultural village of Gangneung. The project is described as a modern interpretation of a traditional Korean villa with linear volumes to maximize the contact with external spaces. Its name- Living Knot- suggests the junction of the two main volumes, emphasized by the use of different materials.

The residence is not just divided visually, but also functionally: “The two rings of volumes sharing the circulation space of the house separate the private living spaces and the more public area within the house. In the design process, the interaction between them produces a certain indeterminacy which triggers spontaneous use of space.” Each interior is characterized by a large amount of openness, one of the main features “borrowed” from the traditional Korean villa design. South Korea defense ministry reportedly crafts a cyber policy group to unify its security

South Korea defense ministry reportedly crafts a cyber policy group to unify its security

If you hadn’t heard, South Korea’s under a lot of pressure lately, including a spate of internet-based attacks against banks and broadcasters on March 20th that some worry (though can’t confirm) was the result of a large-scale hacking campaign. The country won’t simply stand idle and brace for another hit, according to the Yonhap News Agency. It understands from an unnamed senior official that South Korea’s Ministry of Defense is complementing its Cyber Command division with a policy group, not unlike a UK equivalent, that would coordinate online security across different military sections, including the refinement of a defensive cyberwarfare strategy and recruiting more people to bulk up the digital front lines. Provided the claim is accurate, the division would be up and running before the first half of the year is over — and likely not a moment too soon.

Luxurious Living in Johannesburg, South Africa: House Bassonia

modern residence South Africa House TAT Luxurious Living in Johannesburg, South Africa: House Bassonia

Situated within the heart of Bryanston in Johannesburg South Africa, House Bassonia by Nico Van Der Meulen Architects borders the Riverclub golf course. Positioned on top of a sloping site, it elevates above its surroundings. Originally a single story traditional house, the brief involved adding a second story and increasing the areas to more than double its existing size. The style of the house was modernized, prioritizing the views, while ensuring natural northern light penetrates every room. The idea of elongating and stretching the building to its maximum length was birthed upon by studying the layout of the existing plan. Likened to an elastic band that is stretched, the concept resulted in lengthened facades that framed the landscape.

Strategically using frameless folding doors allowed for a transparency on the two longest facades making this contemporary home truly unique. Brilliantly planned and designed, the layout of the house promises views of the golf course from almost every room. Long and narrow in form, the design was successful in seamlessly merging the interior with the exterior. Walking over a Koi pond before entering the house sets the tone of tranquility which engulfs you as you make your way through the well designed open plan double volume spaces. Suspended bridges and a glass staircase pierce the majestic double volume space contributing to the open and airiness of this design. Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South Africa

SAOTA modern architecture 1 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South Africa

SAOTA – Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects in collaboration with Three 14 Architects have completed the design for Glen 2961 House, a modern residence located in Cape Town, South Africa. According to the architects, the new house had to “respond to the site and garden closely, to allow enough space for the family’s diverse requirements – whilst create separate private spaces within the house, and respond to the fierce winds which seasonally hurtle down Table Mountain yet provide a relaxed, homely character“.

A perfect indoor/outdoor connection was achieved by the project team: “To amplify the sense of openness of the rooms and the gardens, the living rooms have large openings of sliding aluminum doors. The kitchen remains the focus of the first floor area, and the main outdoor terrace is a generous layout with outdoor sitting and dining areas. The upper level of the house – to which one approaches on arrival at the property – accommodates 4 en-suite bedrooms with good views and a large study / library area. The garage screens the courtyards from the street“. Seamlessly connecting to the garden and terraces, all the interiors exude freshness and energy-have a look!SAOTA modern architecture 3 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 4 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 5 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 6 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 7 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 8 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 9 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 10 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 11 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 12 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 13 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 14 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 15 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 16 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 17 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 18 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 19 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South AfricaSAOTA modern architecture 20 Relaxed Atmosphere and Expansive Views Offered by Glen 2961 House in South Africa

Yet Another Glamourous Architecture Display in South Africa: Glass House

Glass House 1 Yet Another Glamourous Architecture Display in South Africa: Glass House

Glass House is an imposing residence designed by studio Nico Van Der Meulen Architects and located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The owners wanted a glamorous home, filled with light and strongly connected to its environment. With a total floor area of 2500 square meters, the residence meets its requests. According to the architects, “the shape on the south side is a half circle, forming a horseshoe on the north side. The porte cochere is a suspended glass and stainless steel structure, with view into the house and a stainless steel and glass staircase, suspended over a heated pond, (which in summer acts as a temperature stabilizer, and in winter as a giant heater) with a circular, raised glass water feature in the background, framed by a beam two storeys high”. The interiors of the Glass House are highly modern, with details that dazzle the mind. Have a look and tell us what you find most intriguing.

Modern Architecture Conversion in South Africa: Moss Oaklands Residence

Moss Oklands 3 Modern Architecture Conversion in South Africa: Moss Oaklands Residence

Moss Oaklands Residence was designed by studio Nico Van Der Meulen Architects and is located in Cape Town, South Africa. The brief of the project was aimed at remodeling a 1950s residence and giving it an urban feel. Here is how the architecture team handled this task: “Alterations and additions were made to the original building to allow for four bedrooms and large entertaining areas. The single-storey building allows for large double volume spaces and flat roofs have been used in the alteration to keep vertical expansion in mind for the client’s future. In keeping with the owner’s brief to have a home with an urban and open feel, the interior and exterior entertaining areas have been blurred by sliding stacking doors that open up the whole facade. By using a neutral palette, the company was able to create a warm environment by bringing in touches of colour through rich and bold accessories and furnishings”. How do you find this South-African display of luxury?

Odd-Shaped Family Residence in South Korea: Lollipop House

lollipop house 3 Odd Shaped Family Residence in South Korea: Lollipop House

The Lollipop House in Giheung-Gu, South Korea, was recently completed by Seoul-based studio Moon Hoon. The 1,110 square foot residence was especially developed for a single family and contrasts its neighborhood buildings due to its iconic shape and colorful exterior. The pink and white home consists of seven levels connected by stairs which wrap around an interior void. In case you were wondering what type of rooms could this lollipop shaped home accommodate- the interiors resemble those of a “common” crib: a living area, kitchen and dining area, master bedroom, children’s bedroom, attic playroom and upper level AV room. Do you find this family residence in South Korea fun or a bit out there? If you were to live in a childhood-inspired home, how would it look like?

Striking House Make-Over in South Africa: Mosi Residence

modern conversion 71 Striking House Make Over in South Africa: Mosi Residence

When asked to completely turn around the appearance of a 1950′s home, Nico van der Meulen Architects came up with a highly contemporary solution. Following the clients’ brief, to create a home with an urban feel, the architecture company redesigned Mosi Residence, turning it into a continuous four-bedroom space with plenty of entertaining areas. According to the official project description, “the single-story building allows for large double volume spaces and flat roofs have been used in the alteration to keep vertical expansion in mind for the client’s future. As a result of an impeccable renovation, the house is divided into public and private spaces. To enter the private areas of the home, one must cross a bridge above a new internal water feature which breaks the public and private spaces, separating the entrance hall and study from the private home. In keeping with the owner’s brief to have a home with an urban and open feel, the interior and exterior entertaining areas have been blurred by sliding stacking doors that open up the whole facade“. Be sure to have a look at the “before” photos at the end of the post, for a better understanding of the project and tell us what you think of the differences.

Making The Most Out Of A Breathtaking Location: Ani South Beach Villa

modern beach villa 1 Making The Most Out Of A Breathtaking Location: Ani South Beach Villa

Envisioned by the creative team from Lee Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership, the modern Ani Villas overlooking Little Bay, in Anguilla, Caribbean, are in many ways mesmerizing. Today’s post is dedicated to the project entitled Ani South, one of the buildings that make up this stunning cliff-side duo. According to the official description of the villa, “Ani South sits on the southern side of the estate and looks directly down into Little Bay with its shimmering blue waters. The master bedrooms, indoor and outdoor living spaces are oriented toward the breathtaking western view down the Anguilla coast line and sunset views“. Some of the features of the 5-bedroom residence include the possibility for indoor and outdoor dining, roof deck lounge, pool deck lounge, tennis court and gym area. But what I personally appreciate about this project is that if you were to take away its incredible location and its exterior entertainment facilities, other appealing characteristics would still remain. I am talking of course, of its interior design, filled with organic decorative elements that add freshness and personality.

Tahoe South is Where It’s At

Tahoe South Logo, Before and After

Located smack in the middle of the border between California and Nevada states, Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular vacation and fun-having destinations in the U.S. with a mix of nature-y stuff like skiing, hiking, boating, and more as well as, thanks to its Nevada location, plenty of gambling. Lake Tahoe has two main cities, Tahoe City to the North on the California side and South Lake Tahoe on the South still in California but a stone’s throw away from Nevada, making it more attractive to the work-hard-play-hard crowd. In charge of the South side is the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority who are intent of making their side the side to be in. Changing the destination name from Lake Tahoe South Shore to simply Tahoe South, they have introduced a new identity designed by San Francisco, CA-based Duncan/Channon.

The strategy embraces the truth of the destination, that it’s the place for the up-all-day-and-night visitor, and the brand identity celebrates this spirit.
Duncan/Channon Case Study

Tahoe South

I have recently stayed away from doing full reviews and opinions of destination branding because most aren’t that inspiring or different, but this one got my attention. First, because the old logo was quite decent, with a sophisticated if slightly generic icon, and some generously spaced Mrs Eaves. But the new logo has a very unique energy and roughness to it that, even if also slightly generic in that any fun, rough-and-tumble-outdoorsy destination could adopt, makes it boldly unique and different. Executed by lettering experts Underware, the logo has a great presence with bold, hard-angled strokes and it pairs beautifully with properly curated photography and it stands out nicely on the website, whether it’s next to a few douchebag-ey-looking dudes or shots of the lake itself. This is probably not the best destination branding job of the year, but definitely one of the best examples of commissioned lettering with a strong purpose.
