GigaOM: Intel Media TV service won’t launch at CES, but it is coming soon

GigaOM Intel Media TV service won't launch at CES, but it is coming soon

We’ve seen several reports over the last week about Intel’s set-top box efforts, and an impending CES launch. According to GigaOM, some of those rumors simply aren’t true. The site has confirmed with several sources at Intel that a set-top box (and a whole lot more) is in the works, but a CES announcement has not been planned. Instead, Media, the mysterious Intel division, which is run like a startup with staffers hired from other Silicon Valley companies rather than shifted from different departments, could be unveiled in March, or perhaps even at the AllThingsD Dive Into Media conference in February.

A detailed GigaOM report outlines the company’s plans, which do include a STB manufactured by Intel that would compete with Apple TV, but also solutions for other platforms, including computers, tablets and smartphones. According to GigaOM sources, the company has spent more than $100 million on Intel Media, so it’s clearly taking the effort seriously. Still, until Intel Media has been exposed to the market, it’s too soon to judge its success. Hit up our source link for the full scoop.

Evernote 5 for iOS coming soon: new UI, revised places view, same inability to forget (video)

Evernote 5 for iOS coming soon, new UI, cleaner places view, same inability to forget video

Evernote? More like ever tease. Just this week it was tempting badly organized Mac owners with a beta release of Evernote 5, now the team is back to dangle its 5th version for iOS in front of our noses. The theme here is speed, with the new design putting everything just two taps away — along with quick note buttons right on the home screen. The places view also gets a lick of paint, to help you better pin down those moments of inspiration (or panicked remembering). Other tweaks include a new “recent notes” bar, and — generously — easier access to premium features. Ironically, the creators forgot to give us a release date, leaving us only with “coming very soon” for reassurance. While you wait, however, why not watch the preview video after the break for solace.

LG’s IPS monitors head downmarket with 2D-only IPS4 series launching soon

LG's IPS monitors head downmarket with 2D-only IPS4 series launching soon

While LCD monitors with in-plane switching technology were once decidedly settled at the high end, LG apparently thinks its time for everyone to have one and is launching its mainstream IPS4 line. Executive VP JJ Lee says the aim is for IPS monitors to become “ubiquitous in every room”, bringing better color reproduction, picture quality and wide viewing angles with them. So far we know they’re slotting in just below the 3D-capable models shown off at CES, but there’s nothing mentioned in the press release (included after the break along with another pic) about prices, sizes, specs or model numbers. If you’re in the market however, expect to find out more soon since they will roll out to Asia first in May, followed by Europe and North America in “the coming weeks”.

Intel’s first smartphone coming soon: Xolo X900 gets 24 April release date

Intel's first smartphone release date

Intel’s first Atom smartphone is now available, and it’s Lava’s Xolo X900. It has managed to outpace both Lenovo’s K800 and Orange’s Santa Clara and arrives on the Indian carrier next Monday. Packing a 1.6 GHz Atom Z2460 processor, we handled one in Barcelona a few months ago, and were pleasantly surprised with its responsiveness, if not its middling build quality. The four-inch 1024 x 600 display is accompanied by a one-megapixel camera on the front, plus a primary 8-megapixel shooter on the back capable of burst-shot photography. Despite its plastic build, Intel’s new mobile offering won’t all that cheap; the Xolo X900 by Lava is priced off-contract at around 22,000 INR ($420). At the moment, we’re still waiting to hear how Orange and Lenovo will price up their own Medfield-powered offerings — both are expected to emerge in the next few months.

Nokia confirms Lumia 710, 800 to be knighted with mobile hotspot ‘soon’

Nokia devering mobile hotspot to Lumia 710, 800 'soon' via Zune

If you’ve poured over the specs of Nokia’s Lumia 710 and 800 handsets during the last few months, you’ve likely noticed the duo’s lack of mobile hotspot functionally. Of course, the Finnish phone maker didn’t completely abandoned the feature in Windows Phone, as the ability to turn your device into a portable access point will ship with its flagship Lumia 900 and the recently announced 610 at launch. Nokia admitted that the feature would be coming to the 800 months ago, and now Elop & Company have announced that the 710 is also on the shortlist. A recent Q&A post on its Connects blog explained that software updates will be “coming soon” — by way of Zune update — to remedy the discrepancy between the old and new. No word on what Nokia’s definition of “soon” is, but you can find all the available details at the source link below.

Nokia clarifies battery update on Lumia 800, promises audio / camera fixes soon

Nokia already came clean about the Lumia 800 battery bug, but evidently that just wasn’t enough to appease the masses. A community manager in the outfit’s own forums has just responded to pages upon pages of comments regarding the most recent update, partly to (re)set the record straight regarding the battery, and partly to address more fixes that are just around the bend. The latest update (1600.2483.8106.11500) was meant to “enhance standby time as well as to bring an improvement to the issue reported by some customers in December,” and according to Nokia, said update does indeed address those problems. However, folks that still have concerns regarding audio and camera settings aren’t being ignored; those quirks will be worked out in “a series of future updates.” Eager to learn more? The full reply is embedded just after the break.

Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook listed at US retailer for $900, ‘coming soon’

Looks like that 13.3-inch Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook we saw honeymooning with a ‘friend’ in Korea is almost ready to head over to the States. JR.com has listed it as “coming soon” for $899.99 along with a spec sheet that details the same 500GB/16GB hybrid drive we saw previously, along with a Core i5-2467M serving up CPU horsepower and graphics, 4GB of DDR3, 1366 x 768 LED backlit display, a single USB 3.0 port and WiDi. The weight and dimensions seem slightly chunkier than last reported though, with thickness reaching a maximum of 0.69-inches and a weight of 3.24 pounds — still, it’s a lot more shapely than the 1TB 14-incher it left behind.
