Weekend House In The Main Residence’s Back Garden

Low Energy Weekend House by Pokorny Architekti Weekend House In The Main Residences Back Garden

The first thing you need to know about this weekend house is that is has an interesting location – right behind the client’s main residence. The owner lives in a small village called Nosice, but works in Bratislava, so a weekend commute to a remote retreat would imply more fuss than relaxation for him and the family. After taking into account all options, the architects of Bratislava-based studio Pokorny Architekti came to an agreement with their client to build the structure in this beautiful location overlooking the Javorniky Mountains. Basing the design on the owner’s vague request for a “Slovak traditional wooden house somewhere in the mountains of Central Slovakia”, the architects finished constructing the two story weekend retreat last year, in 2011, and the result is fabulous.

Spreading over 1,400 square feet, the warm wooden interiors compliment the surroundings. A central double height living zone featuring a stove with a tile backsplash acts as the core of the house, allowing the client to see the gathered family from the main bedroom and the staircase. Right next to this social space, an open floor plan allowed the dining space to be part of the downstairs entertaining area. The structure’s asymmetric shape looks amazing adorned with a roofed atrium and the use of layered and insulated wood panels -  pine on the outside and larch slabs on the inside – makes the weekend house very much part of the surroundings. And, as no retreats should be without, a sauna and hot tub keeps the owners happy and relaxed, while the outdoor grill emphasizes the entertaining and cooking activities.

The Harrison Street Residences in California Built for a Young Family

the harrison street residences 2 The Harrison Street Residences in California Built for a Young Family

The Harrison Street Residences were designed by by Dawson+Clinton design and build firm. The multi-family residential building is located in in San Francisco, California. Seamlessly connecting the interior and exterior spaces, the design of this residential building proves that multi-unit residences have a specific charm in an urban neighborhood. Created for one of the owners at Dawson+Clinton, the home of Paul Dawson and his young growing family was completed in three years. Basing the design on the family needs – especially on what it takes to raise two young children aged 3 and 5 in an urban setting – the Harrison Street Residence was built to offer as much safe space for outdoor activities and as much entertaining space on the inside. In addition to this, the roof deck allows the parents to keep an eye on the children as they enjoy the back garden. The bright interior spaces were especially created to be open and durable, to endure the games of growing children. This residence displays a modern, high-quality environment for a young family while looking contemporary and youthful.

Harrison Street Residences by Dawson+Clinton

The recently completed Harrison Street multi-unit residence is a the definition of urban family living. The property contains two innovative residences filled with upscale materials and finishes which elevates the space beyond mere function and creates a seamless integration of indoor/outdoor living space.

This is perfect for its newest residents, Paul Dawson and his young growing family. This is Paul and his wife Rebecca’s pet project for their family. Paul is one of the owners of Dawson+Clinton, a boutique design/build firm located in San Francisco. The Harrison Street project has taken them 3 years to complete, with many hurtles including, during the digging for the underground garage they found an underground stream. Through all the struggles they have completed a masterpiece in urban family living. The design of the residences was based off of Paul & Rebecca’s family needs for their two young children (3 years & 5 years) who need exercise, outdoor space and the ability to have fun. Always the active parents, their needs are not unique in this day and age where an urban setting offers different take on child rearing. Urban living with a family doesn’t led itself to bike riding or skateboarding on the street out front, so making sure there was enough outdoor safe space for the kids to grow and play was of the utmost importance. In addition, the roof deck provides an adult area to entertain friends and enjoy the warmer weather in this part of the city. The interior of the space is open, airy and bright showcasing the modern design but not sacrificing function. Using high end building materials, including stainless steal this provides for the durability need with two young growing active kids. We all know skateboarding in the house is a no, no but kids will be kids. The open floor plan allows for everyone to do their own thing but still be connected at the same time. This was very important to Paul & Rebecca who want to allow their kids the ability to grow and develop individually but within a safe environment. The next project at Harrison Street is figuring out where to put the garden!
