Original Mix Between Small Hotel and Private Apartment Rental: Flattered

Presented to us by Welcome Beyond, Flattered is a mix between a small hotel and a private apartment rental, located in the historical city of Porto. The project features 5 modern apartments in a building featuring a mix of vintage furniture and illustrations by up-and-coming Portuguese artists adorning the walls. All apartments were open spaces originally and the idea was to have the flexibility to accept more than two people in each apartment, basically offering an extra bed without intruding into the space.

The solution was to install wooden boxes that are a little higher than the floor, with a drawer bed that is concealed underneath and can be pulled out. According to the owner of the unusual apartments, Flattered is an attempt to create something cozy and warm, different from the hotel chains. A place where people can feel at home, yet at the same time they can experience cool design. The apartments are fully equipped to be self-catering. They have kitchens with all the appliances one needs as well as unique items that aren’t standard. [Photos and information provided via e-mail by Welcome Beyond]

Interesting Design Elements and Rental Features: Nowhere but Sajima House

The Nowhere but Sajima House has proven to be an outstanding modern vacation home for its inhabitants. Located approximately 1 hour away from Tokyo, in a small fishing village, the vacation house designed by Japanese architect Yasutaka Yoshimura brings fresh architectural inspiration for those in need of new ideas. Offering extensive views of Mount Fuji and the Enoshima peninsula, the Nowhere but Sajima House mimics an urban setting at a perfect distance from the crowded city. This offers the opportunity of enjoying a week or a weekend away from urban developments for different tenants. The house is perfect for different activities, from relaxing after a stressful period to parties and even weddings. Its architecture allows the tenants to explore a triangular structure with tube-like spaces that can easily adapt to any need. Although the house faces other buildings across the water, the main openings that serve as frames for the view were designed to only capture the extraordinary water panoramas, thus making curtains or other view-obstructing elements obsolete. How would you feel if you had the chance of renting such a spectacular house?

Australia’s Jetstar Airways takes the training wheels off iPad rental program, wants the tablet ‘on every aircraft’
Here’s a quick and easy way to escape the mediocrity of those tiny low-res LCDs embedded in the seat in front of you: slap down 10 Australian dollars and upgrade to the iPad’s IPS goodness for the duration of your Jetstar Airways flight. This rental option has been available on the Australian airline’s flights since June, but only in pilot form (insert your own jokes here), and the feedback has been good enough for the company to make it a fleet-wide policy. “Movies, music, magazines, books and games” will all come preloaded, so you shouldn’t fret about having to shell out extra hunting around for content. Licensing agreements are expected to be finalized shortly, with the rental program rolling out in full this April.

Amazing Rental Villa with Panoramic Views in South Africa
Located in the luxurious surroundings of Campus Bay, South Africa, the villa you are about to admire is a surprising architectural masterpiece. Designed by Cape Town’s most beloved architect, Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA), the rental building was named First Crescent Villa. Showcasing a wonderful open space, with a lot of light caressing the interiors, the villa has a simple design that surprises through quality and carefully chosen materials used for building it. A large outdoor skylight further connects the building to the landscape and the huge windows allow the natural view to contrast with the impressive, contemporary interior. The creator and designer of this astonishing building sees it like “a minimalist home commanding a 270 degree view of Lions Head, Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. All living spaces have a great connection to the covered or uncovered terraces. The living spaces are highly transparent to take full advantage of the views. The architecture is notable for its use of cantilevers, linear arrangement and limited palette of materials.”

Mind-Blowing Rental Villa Showcasing Sophisticated Interiors and Views
A mind-blowing residence in Cabrera, Dominican Republic, steals your heart from the first minute you lay your eyes on it. Named Casa Kimball, the building features astounding panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean from all points of the building and garden. Having over 20,000 square feet, the property is actually a contemporary rental villa that can be enjoyed by everyone who pays from $3,000 to $5,000 per day, depending on the season. The sophisticated interiors are the perfect match for the incredible infinity pool and fresh breeze of the Ocean. Eight full suites are available for rent, each of them created for relaxation and fulfillment of dreams. Almond trees and coco palms surround the three acre property and offer the natural setting needed for a perfect vacation. Describing the property, the architects from Rangr Studio tell us their point of view:

“The buildings are designed to protect from views of neighbouring villas, heightening the experience of the vast horizon beyond. The interior spaces merge with exterior spaces, all of which are designed to allow ocean breezes under shade from the sun, throughout the year. Light at sunset rakes through trees, casting dappled sunlight on the light stone floors in the evening. Rangr Studio designed the gigantic window/doors to pivot effortlessly on ball bearings, with very thin frames, made of a South-American hardwood as strong as steel. Two finishes of local coral stone make up much of the wall and floor finish.“

Will rental car companies ding you for returning half-charged electric vehicles? Enterprise won’t.
Here’s a shocker in more ways than one. Earlier this month, Enterprise Rent-A-Car announced that it would soon be offering Chevrolet’s Volt at the company’s Mark Christopher Auto Center in Ontario, California, and we reasonably assumed that renters best watch out for any unforeseen charges that may arise from returning it with a dead (or near-dead) stash of batteries. For anyone who has rented a gasoline-powered automobile in the past score, you’ll know that returning a whip with a fuel tank that’s just 90 percent full won’t quite cut it, and you’ll be stuck ponying up for your oversight. Thankfully — at least at Enterprise — a similar surcharge setup will not be applied to electric vehicles. Lisa Martini, a spokesperson for Enterprise, got in touch with us to clarify the outfit’s plans, and they’re shockingly consumer-friendly:
“[Enterprise] does not plan to charge customers for bringing back EVs without a full charge. Enterprise is installing charging stations at locations that will offer EVs, and plans to charge the vehicles once they’re returned.”
That pretty much sums it up for at least one major rental company, and we can only hope that everyone else publishes similar intentions before their accountants publish something to the contrary. Power to the people, eh?
