Microsoft planning ‘next release’ of Windows Phone for this holiday season

Microsoft planning 'next release' of Windows Phone for this holiday season

A new job listing over at Microsoft has revealed when the outfit is planning to serve up the next iteration of its smartphone OS. According to the post, work on the current version is being finished up and they’re “getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year.” Presumably, the update will be part of the wider Blue umbrella of tweaks for Windows. Though a vague “next release” doesn’t offer any details in terms of features, it’s likely the OS will carry a significant set of changes as the team in need of a developer is responsible for the Start screen experience, the shell, first party apps and more.

Intel’s first smartphone coming soon: Xolo X900 gets 24 April release date

Intel's first smartphone release date

Intel’s first Atom smartphone is now available, and it’s Lava’s Xolo X900. It has managed to outpace both Lenovo’s K800 and Orange’s Santa Clara and arrives on the Indian carrier next Monday. Packing a 1.6 GHz Atom Z2460 processor, we handled one in Barcelona a few months ago, and were pleasantly surprised with its responsiveness, if not its middling build quality. The four-inch 1024 x 600 display is accompanied by a one-megapixel camera on the front, plus a primary 8-megapixel shooter on the back capable of burst-shot photography. Despite its plastic build, Intel’s new mobile offering won’t all that cheap; the Xolo X900 by Lava is priced off-contract at around 22,000 INR ($420). At the moment, we’re still waiting to hear how Orange and Lenovo will price up their own Medfield-powered offerings — both are expected to emerge in the next few months.

HP eyes 2015 release for 3D integrated photonic chips

It’s unavoidable — mention HP and images of the TouchPad come floating to the surface. What most geek folk don’t realize, however, is that the company recently famous for open sourcing webOS has been hard at work behind-the-scenes prepping for the next stage in computing: integrated photonics. The project, codenamed Corona, aims to create stackable 3D chips that communicate using inbuilt, microscopic lasers made from gallium. This new breed of CPUs is on track to combine “256 general purpose cores organized in 64 four-core clusters” created using a 16nm process for a performance boost of up to six times faster than traditional circuitry. Why do this? Well, the nature of optical communication would not only speed up the rate at which the various cores could relay data (a theoretical 20 terabytes per second), but would also drastically lower power requirements from a current 160 watts to 6.4 watts. Sounds like the future, indeed, but as with all things forward-facing, many of the necessary components are still being developed, so take that 2015 target date with a heady amount of sodium chloride.

WIMM One Android wearable gets developer release

A few months back we got hands-on with a new wearable Android device called the WIMM One. You may remember the one-inch square touchscreen device packed a silly amount of tech — Bluetooth, accelerometer, WiFi, etc — into its diminutive form. Well now it’s back, and is available to any developer willing to drop $299 on it. Since we last strapped it to our wrists, WIMM has created a dev community with forums for those keen to build, create and share micro apps for the device. Dedicated apps for Android and Blackberry devices are imminent, and iOS is in the post. A few dedicated apps are already surfacing, including a port of the popular SportyPal app, but we expect this number to grow pretty quickly from today. We’ve got one here ready to go, so we’ll be putting it through its paces — or the other way around — real soon.

Palm Pixi shows off 3D gaming chops with webOS 1.4.5 release (video)

What with all the “battery optimization” excitement, we nearly forgot that Sprint’s new webOS 1.4.5 update doesn’t just empower the Pre; it also finally brings PDK’d OpenGL and SDL support to the Palm Pixi. On the off chance you don’t speak developer lingo, that’s short for 3D apps and games, and as it turns out the pint-sized Pixi doesn’t play the latter half badly. PreCentral fired up a copy of Need For Speed: Undercover on the freshly-upgraded handset immediately above, and found the game perfectly playable with “decent” framerates and only slightly sub-par load times. Watch their riced-up Nissan turn tricks right after the break, and pray companies get cracking on some Unreal Engine 3 apps soon.
