2011 Brand New Awards, Pre-Order

After a slight delay on our part, the 2011 Brand New Awards book is now in stock. We are still finishing up a proper storefront and photographing the book so all we have to convince you is the preview video above. In the meantime, we are going to have a short pre-order period until Wednesday October 17 with 20% off the retail price of $34.99 (so a total of $27.99 right now). Pre-orders will start shipping at the end of next week.
NOTE: This year there will not be an iPad app. Nor the year after that, until further notice. BUT there will be a paid-access website, with very similar design and functionality as last year’s app. The cost will be $15.00. You can see a sample static page here.

Google TV goes international, Sony NSZ-GS7 set-top box up for preorder in the US and UK
Sony mentioned during CES 2012 that its Google TV-powered hardware would come to Europe this summer, and now it’s official. Along with Google, it’s announced preorders are available for the $200/£200/$199 NSZ-GS7 internet streaming set-top box in the US and UK (showing a ship date of July 9th for now), with plans to launch in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico and Netherlands later this year. The NSZ-GP9 with integrated Blu-ray player will arrive in October, priced at £280/€300 overseas. UK users can expect localized content from The Guardian among other sources, and more reveals are promised at Google I/O this week. There’s an internationally-aimed trailer (embedded after the break) and more information from Sony and Google at their respective sites, we’ll see if the mix of reworked hardware and updated software makes this venture more successful than the last round.

Spark Linux tablet specs updated, going up for pre-order next week
We already got a brief introduction to the Spark Linux-based tablet, but details were a little sparse. Since then, a few more key bits of info have been added to its Q&A page, which might help sway your purchasing decision. That KDE Plasma Active UI we knew it’d be sporting will stare out at you via a modest 800 x 480 screen, and there’s a 1.3 megapixel snapper tucked in alongside for video calling. The 1GHz / 512 MB internals we initially reported remain unchanged and the two USB ports and 3.5mm audio jack we saw in the pre-release picture above also get the official seal. There’s talk of GPS making it into the next iteration, but for now you’ll have to find your own way. The main news, however, is that pre-orders are pegged for next week, and shipping set for May. The initial focus is on Europe, but plans for it to arrive in US retailers are apparently underway. If that’s suitably tickled your fancy, head on over the break and tap the source for more info.

Nokia Lumia 900 up for pre-order at Microsoft Store, $25 down puts you in line
By now, you’re well aware of the Lumia 900, the LTE-wielding Windows Phone that’s set to do battle with the Titan II on AT&T. While we’re still looking to a March arrival, if you happen to live close to a Microsoft retail store, you can pre-order one of these fine handsets for yourself today. We reached out to the folks in Redmond to confirm the news, who tell us that a Lumia 900 — which has yet to be blessed with an official price — can be secured for just $25. Of course, if you’re nowhere within reach of a Microsoft outlet, well, it appears you’ve got a long drive ahead of you. Anyone road tripping it for this one?

ASUS Transformer Prime pre-order shipments delayed at Best Buy, Amazon
ASUS’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime has already suffered a few setbacks on its march to the US market and unfortunately, it looks as if another obstacle may be on the horizon. According to a handful of tips we’ve received this morning, Best Buy has been sending out emails to users who pre-ordered the new tablet for delivery this week, informing them that shipments have been “back-ordered,” and delayed by one to two weeks. This means, of course, that some buyers may not receive the device until after Christmas. In its email, Best Buy gave its customers the option of canceling their orders outright, replacing it with a similar device, or searching the product at a brick and mortar location (a customer service rep told us that there are no stores that currently have the Transformer Prime in stock). Some who ordered the slate on Amazon, meanwhile, have received emails informing them that their orders were “inadvertently canceled,” and offering them the chance to pre-order it again today, along with a $10 gift card to make up for the inconvenience. We asked ASUS about the Transformer Prime’s delivery status, and received the following response:
We started filling the pipelines this past week and will continue to do so on an almost daily basis this coming week, although any shipments to the partners after Wednesday will probably mean availability the following week based on logistics. But we expect the inventory pipeline to be full by the first of the year. The orders shipped this past week and starting this week will cover the pre-order allocations and then start allowing online or in-store availability.
We’ll be following this story closely, so check this space for any further updates.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

HTC’s Facebook phones, ChaCha and Salsa, get Amazon pre-order with June 26th delivery
Feeling the need for a phone with a dedicated Facebook button? HTC’s got two to offer you, and now Amazon’s UK bureau is ready to take pre-orders for the new Salsa and ChaCha handsets for a June 26th delivery. The ChaCha’s equipped with a portrait QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6-inch touchscreen, while the Salsa stretches out to 3.4 inches and eschews the physical keys. Both feature 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processors and 512MB of RAM, which are used to run Android with Sense laid over the top. The unsubsidized prices are set at £250 ($409) for the ChaCha and £320 ($524) for the Salsa, though we’re sure you’ll be able to get them without any upfront payments if you’re happy to sign your life away to a carrier for the next couple of years.

HDHomeRun Prime TV tuner passes CableLabs tests, available for preorder on Amazon
We’ve been waiting for SiliconDust’s CableCARD-compatible HDHomeRun Prime for a little over a year and it seems finally ready to bring its triple tuner TV magic home, having gained CableLabs certification as of April 28th and subsequently showing up for preorder on Amazon. While this is mostly big news for Windows Media Center fans who need a new way to get premium channels on their box it also supports other DVR software like MythTV on Copy Freely-marked content. HTPC builders don’t have to choose between this HDHR3-CC and the (suddenly in abundant supply) Ceton InfiniTV 4 just yet, since the listing has no shipping date and the last we’d heard from SiliconDust was that preorders would ship around 30 days after it completed certification. Check out our hands-on impressions from CES a few months ago if you’re on the fence, but right now all that’s standing between you and that grey box is a little bit of time… and $207.
