Epix heading to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita

Epix heading to PlayStation 3 and PS Vita

iOS, Android, Google TV, XBox — heck, Epix even has an app for the BlackBerry PlayPook. So, what’s surprising is not that the premium movie channel is coming to the PS3 and Vita, but that it took so long for it to happen. Soon Sony’s gaming faithful will be able to download the app from the PlayStation Store and start streaming the network’s sizable catalog of movies and original content. Of course, you’ll have to have actually subscribe to it through your cable provider first, but you knew that already, didn’t you. For more check out the PR after the break.

Sony PlayStation 3 (2012) up close and personal (eyes-on)

Sony PlayStation 3 2012 up close and personal eyeson

Just after their pre-TGS announcement, we were able to snag a closer look at Sony’s new slimmed-down PlayStation 3 consoles. While we weren’t able to put our grubby mitts on the pair, we did get a peek at some of the exterior differences. Aside from the obvious color variations (at least in the white model that’s definitely headed for Japan), the first change that immediately jumps out is the absence of the visible disc slot on the console’s front. We surmise that discs now load via a sliding tray mechanism of some sort — a feature that we’ll definitely take a closer look at when we grab a full hands-on on the show floor. There’s also a grooved design up top, which makes a departure from the smooth casing from the previous models. From the display we took a gander at, an attachable base is included to secure the unit when used vertically. Want a closer look for yourself? Dive in to the gallery below to do just that.

Music Unlimited app arrives on PlayStation Vita, Android version gets offline play

Listening to music isn’t the best reason to take the plunge with the PS Vita. However, a new feature’s a new feature, and Sony’s very happy to tell you that its own subscription-based Music Unlimited service has arrived on UK devices, courtesy of its own dedicated app. Now you’ve had your fill of the games, Twitter and Facebook apps, it must be time to integrate with Sony’s verticals and hand over more cash. The Android app has also been updated to include offline playback to songs added to your playlists — like another certain streaming music service. You can grab the latest version at the source below.

PSA: PlayStation Network goes down for maintenance tomorrow, will last around 15 hours

We know that it’s become all too easy to assume that the PlayStation Network is getting hacked again whenever it goes down. That said, consider this another heads-up in long line of previous friendly reminders: Since being postponed last Thursday, Sony’s announced that the PSN will go down for “significant maintenance” tomorrow, March 4th starting at 2 PM EST until approx 5 AM on Monday, March 5th. Unlike February’s fixin’, you’ll still be booted offline even if you’ve logged-in with your SEN ID prior to the scheduled maintenance window. This means you won’t be able to hop into a game of Domination on MW3, along with being restricted from accessing your account, the PlayStation Store, Home etc., as per usual. You can stay glued to PlayStation on twitter to get the official word on when everything’s back up, but may we just suggest a stroll outside? Hey, consider it an excuse to try out Near if you were one of the 1.2 million to snag yourself a PS Vita — oh wait, that requires being logged into the PSN, too. Sigh.

‘Select’ PS Vita apps hit the US PlayStation Store: Netflix, LiveTweet and Flickr

Did you just brave the lines of a midnight launch party and snag yourself a PS Vita in the US? Good news ye early adopters, Sony’s PlayStation Blog has just announced that select free apps will be available today as part of today’s PlayStation Store update. Currently, you’ll find Netflix, LiveTweet and Flickr, but there’s still nary of trace of Facebook or Foursquare among the bunch (nor any official word on release dates for that matter). We gave each app a download and quick spin prior to them being officially listed, and everything’s running fairly smooth so far. Disappointingly, Vita’s 20MB cap on 3G data is totally in effect on Netflix, as switching to our cellular connection denied us any access to the service. We’re giving the apps some extended use to bring you our initial impressions shortly, but for now, you’ll find more info at the source link below.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Acro and Xperia Arc get PlayStation Certified in Japan

Hello, PlayStation Certification! Looks like the Xperia Play is getting a bit of company in Japan, where Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Arc and Acro are getting that coveted seal of approval. Updates are actually rolling out across a number of SE phones on NTT DoCoMo, enabling dozens upon dozens of new games to be tailored (and available) for the Arc and Acro in particular. Hit the source link for the official word, and if you aren’t camped out in the Land of the Rising Sun, hang tight — we get the feeling Sony proper is going to be pushing this initiative a lot harder than it has been thus far.

Sony outs trio of limited edition PlayStation 3 consoles, keeps it fresh with a few paint jobs

How do you keep selling a five-year old system? You slap a new coat of paint on it and call it a “limited edition,” that’s how. Which is precisely what Sony’s gotten up to with three newly colored versions of its PlayStation 3. Hitting the electronics giant’s homeland this November 17th are a duo of 320GB consoles, offered up in either Splash Blue or Scarlet Red, that come paired with a similarly hued DualShock controller and ¥29980 ($390) asking price. The prettiest of the bunch, however, won’t be released until December 15th in Japan, and that’s the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Lightning Edition Ver.2. Timed to coincide with the retail debut of the Square Enix-made sequel, that console (pictured above) also boasts a 320GB HDD, bundled copy of the game and a plain old black controller — all for ¥37960 ($494). If you need to add a little spice back into your gaming life, it might be time to get your import on.

PlayStation Vita’s slick augmented reality demoed in Reality Fighters, we go hands-on (video)

Back in January, we caught a glimpse of a hilarious PS Vita title dubbed Reality Fighters, and as the name suggests, it’s a Street Fighter-like game that makes use of the device’s augmented reality feature. Well, SmartAR, to be precise, which has already been proven to deliver slick AR in large space without the need of a marker, and that’s exactly what we experienced earlier today at TGS 2011.

What happens in this game is that you can first create your own fighting avatar — not only does it let you map your face using either camera on the Vita, but there’s also a whole range of body shapes, facial features, weapons and fashion accessories to add to your character. Once you have your fighter ready, you then have three options: use the current surroundings as your battle backdrop, or use one of the many default backdrops (and the final version of the game will allow players to create their own backdrop), or use a marker. We only managed to try the first two AR modes with the brief hands-on time we had, but both worked seamlessly for us — see for yourself in our hands-on video above.

Surprisingly, this game only uses just one of the four CPU cores on the Vita! But then again, we’ve already seen SmartAR running smoothly on the Xperia Arc, which goes to show how relatively little number crunching power is required for SmartAR. Expect to see this funny game to come out in February.

Sony answers more PlayStation Vita questions: no to video output, yes to region-free

We heard earlier at E3 that the PlayStation Vita might be able to do video output via the multiport on the bottom of the handheld, but it’s now looking like that won’t be the case — at least according to the official FAQ that Sony has made available. In slightly better news, however, Sony exec Michael Denny said today that, to the best of his knowledge, the PS Vita will indeed be region-free just like the PS3. Otherwise, Sony hasn’t provided much more in the way of surprises, but it looks like it is at least leaving the door open to helping folks bring their UMD-bound games with them to the new handheld. While it’s ruled out a UMD reader of any sort, Sony says that it will “consider every possibility for support on bought UMD games,” although it has nothing to announce at this time. Check out the complete FAQ at the source link below.
