Playbook OS version 2.0 leaked: is RIM really sacking BES?
This one comes with a health warning: even if the leaked screenshot above is legit, it’s easy to over-interpret. Nevertheless, it purports to show the account setup page from Blackberry Tablet OS 2.0 and it distinctly lacks any option to sync with Blackberry Enterprise Server or Internet Service. Instead, you’re able to configure Exchange/Active Sync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV and CardDAV accounts, which suggests that RIM is switching to the same integrated email, contacts and calendar solutions as everyone else. Of course, it could be that the BES/BIS simply isn’t enabled on this particular device, or that it’ll be added in a later version of the OS. Then again, we can’t help but recall those Colt rumors which also hinted that RIM’s in-house service would be incompatible with QNX.
Another juicy tidbit: a second screen shot after the break reveals a green robot icon in the far left. So, even if it Android integration has been delayed, at least it hasn’t been forgotten.

BlackBerry PlayBook receives certification for US government use
The BlackBerry PlayBook may not have exactly won over consumers en masse, but it looks like RIM can now at least put a feather in its cap when it comes to one of its key customer bases: government agencies. The company announced today that the PlayBook is the first tablet to receive the so-called FIPS 140-2 certification which, according to RIM, means that the US federal government can “buy with confidence knowing that the PlayBook meets their computing policy requirements for protecting sensitive information.” Of course, those agencies will still need to make sure to supply a BlackBerry smartphone as well so folks can access some of that information — although this may be one instance where that’s considered to be more of a feature than an omission.

BlackBerry PlayBook headed to Sprint on June 5th for $500?
We’re still waiting for some completely official word on the matter, but it looks like a Sprint exec has let slip the carrier’s launch details for the BlackBerry PlayBook. While the post has since been removed, Sprint Marketing Director Gerald Evans revealed on his personal blog earlier today that the WiFi-only, 16GB version of the tablet will be hitting Sprint stores on Sunday, June 5th for the usual $499.99. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the carrier’s 4G version which, last we heard, was still on track for a summer release.

WiFi BlackBerry PlayBook priced at $500 in Office Depot’s systems
Now this is what we’re talking about! Sure, we’ve been well aware of RIM’s plans to take the PlayBook to Sprint (and maybe even Verizon), but if this Office Depot listing is to be believed, a 16GB, WiFi version of the 7-inch tablet will also be heading to some retailers for the very competitive price of $499.99. It’s really the first solid PlayBook pricing we’ve seen, and we’ve got to admit, we’re happy to see that RIM followed through on its word to offer the touchscreen slab for under $500. (And hey, it sure beats the leaked Xoom pricing we saw earlier this week.) Unfortunately, the screenshot above doesn’t reveal much more, although it lists the QNX-powered slate as hitting Office Depot stores on “Week 17,” which is the last week in April according to our calendar. That’s a bit later than the March date we’ve heard before, but either way we’re waiting for spring to start and hoping Office Depot’s cut out its shady practices so we can snatch up one of these ASAP.
