Emblaze First Else UX engineer embraced by HP / Palm, magic ensues

Remember that day when Emblaze wowed the world with its First Else “death of main menu” smartphone? What a shame, eh? While it’s unlikely that said Linux handset will ever resurrect, there’s a small chance that bits of its legacy will be passed onto other products. For instance, a recent LinkedIn newsletter led us to one Itai Vonshak who was the lead designer behind the First Else’s brilliant, mesmerizing UI. Now, according to his profile, our man has recently moved into HP / Palm’s comfy little house to do UX strategy. Whether this means webOS will get a slice of that Minority Report action, we don’t know; but it’ll be interesting to see what Vonshak will surprise us with at the HP / Palm event next month. For now, there’s a hands-on video of the First Else after the break for old time’s sake.

Nokia’s ex-MeeGo chief lands at Palm?

It looks like design heads at Palm and Nokia have more or less swapped roles, as All Things D reports that Nokia’s ex-MeeGo head Ari Jaaksi has just been hired by Palm — a month after Nokia grabbed Palm’s Peter Skillman to head up user experience and services for MeeGo. Fate? Coincidence? As long as both struggling smartphone companies bring us better devices and improved operating systems as a result, we’re not all that concerned. The rumor also suggests a Samsung VP and several HP executives will be boosting Palm’s team as well.

Palm Pixi shows off 3D gaming chops with webOS 1.4.5 release (video)

What with all the “battery optimization” excitement, we nearly forgot that Sprint’s new webOS 1.4.5 update doesn’t just empower the Pre; it also finally brings PDK’d OpenGL and SDL support to the Palm Pixi. On the off chance you don’t speak developer lingo, that’s short for 3D apps and games, and as it turns out the pint-sized Pixi doesn’t play the latter half badly. PreCentral fired up a copy of Need For Speed: Undercover on the freshly-upgraded handset immediately above, and found the game perfectly playable with “decent” framerates and only slightly sub-par load times. Watch their riced-up Nissan turn tricks right after the break, and pray companies get cracking on some Unreal Engine 3 apps soon.
