Sustainable Modern Architecture Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Israel

This imposing contemporary home located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, on the southern slope of Mount Carmel in Israel, was designed by Heidi Arad Architects and pays tribute to sustainable architecture. With a total living area of 250 square meters, the residence showcases an elegant exterior, dominated by a white color, partially disrupted by wooden cladding. The project is opened towards the sea, with the help of glass sliding doors. Once inside, a potential visitor is likely to be impressed by the stylish interiors and modern decorations. The principles of sustainable architecture were cleverly adapted to the overall design: ventilation is ensured in a natural way through panoramic windows, rainwater is collected in a special tank and used for household purposes, and natural materials are used throughout. How would you personally comment on this project, in relationship to its natural landscape and cultural environment?

Residential Viewing Platform Overlooking San Francisco Bay

Embedding a residential space into the topography is always a challenge when it comes to design and construction. The exemplary Hillside Residence imagined by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects shows that accessible views, a respect for the land and a powerful desire to overcome any challenge can result in a fantastic dream home. A curved retaining wall undulates along the topography lines, creating a respectful and creative way of embedding the structure into the steep hillside. This wall guides footsteps towards the main entrance and engages the concept of a secluded courtyard with is sinuous shape running across the hill’s serpentine.

Overlooking panoramas of Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco Bay from behind glass walls and piercing them through to the interior pool yard, this spectacular modern residence is a huge viewing platform for changing seasons. This protected courtyard is probably the most interesting feature of the house – light comes both from the carved ceiling and from the large sliding glass doors catching glimpses of the surroundings seen through the expansive, gallery-like social and living spaces. As the designers describe it, the Hillside Residence also incorporates sustainability features: “Three volumes housing the living room, kitchen-dining area, and master bedroom rise up above the living roof with shed roofs angled to capture the sun for photovoltaic and solar hot water panels. The house incorporates passive and active heating and cooling systems, battery storage, and a cistern for water runoff management.”

Resurrected Norwegian Northface House Overlooking The Fjord

Originally built in 1969, this residence underwent a necessary transformation that modified the entire floor plan and facade display. Known as the Northface House, this modern, 277 square meter dwelling was resurrected and can now offer both a beautifully designed setting for a modern lifestyle and unobstructed views of the inspiring landscape to the north. Its location in Stavanger, Norway, allows the glass walls to capture breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the fjord. Element Arkitekter AS were the ones who came up with a solution for the modernization of this house, rehabilitating the bottom two stories and replacing the top story with a lighter construction oriented towards the view and cantilevering 3 meters over the lower levels. Entering at top level and experiencing different vantage points throughout the floors, the Northface House is dressed in wood on both the inside and outside, creating a warm atmosphere for the inhabitants, as well as passers-by.

Dreamy Rooftop Apartment Overlooking Bondi Beach

A beautiful rooftop apartment rises on one of the streets of Sydney, Australia. Curiously remodeling the appearance of the building it stands on, the Bondi Penthouse overlooks Bondi Bay and beach and borrows its name. Spread over 180 square meters, this creation of MPR Design Group displays a highly modern design. Adorning the rooftop of an Art Deco building, the lightweight metal clad structure benefits from plenty of natural light coming from a mixture of skylights and windows. An immaculate set of interiors and exterior spaces compose social and private rooms, all free flowing and strongly connected to the surroundings.

By adding a contemporary top to an historic building, MPR Design Group created yet another stunning example of blending old and new architectural languages. Laying at the owner’s feet, wide lime washed timber floor boards set the tone for an elegant interior design, where white and silver Alucobond cladding, together with limestone and Calacutta marble shape a dreamy residence. Arranged under cleverly hidden LED light fittings, minimalist pieces of furniture provoke the inhabitants to relax in the comfort of this luxurious penthouse apartment.

Fluid Otter Cove Residence Overlooking the Ocean in California

Studio Sagan Piechota Architecture completed the Otter Cove Residence, a meandering home perched on a cliff, overlooking the ocean in Carmel, California. Here is more from the architects: “The large area of the house was disguised by splitting the house into two wings — recessing the house into the site and locating nearly half of the space partially underground. The plan-split created a courtyard, the eastern wing providing privacy from Highway One and the western wing buffering the ocean wind. Secondary spaces are located on the lower floor and borrow light from above through three staircases. These spaces provide respite from the panoramic drama on the upper floor. Roofs are visually pulled apart from the walls creating the affect of lightness and lift. Walls are located only where absolutely necessary for privacy or structure and treated as monolithic elements.“. Fluidity is the main attribute of this home, meant to be a natural extension to its landscape.

Noteworthy Modern Home Overlooking Lake And Mountains

Located in Unterterzen, near one of Switzerland’s largest lakes – Walensee – this residential project raising two stories in the air was designed by Austrian studio K_M Architektur. Overlooking both the lake and the Churfirsten mountains, the splendid modern residence rests on an undulating landscape. Cladded in wood and cantilevering over the landscape, Wohnhaus Am Walensee displays an incredible connection to its surroundings, seen through glass walls and enjoyed from behind the glass railing on each terrace.

The architects describe the project’s challenges and results: “The property which is located on the slope of a green meadow offered the conditions to realize the floating design which captivates through its clear form and the use of natural materials using concrete, glass and wood as structural material. A loggia encircles the building on the water side, fulfills an open living space and creates a flowing transition between interior and exterior with a fantastic panoramic view. The effect is intensified by sliding glass doors as high as the room itself on this side of the façade. The back of the house appears to be more closed. Rooftop photovoltaic panels and a stove in the living room produce most of the energy for the home.” Seems like this dream home is one to remember, don’t you think?

Modern House in Portugal, Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean

This contemporary residence in southern Portugal was designed by studio Mario Martins Atelier and comes with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. According to the architects, House in Lagos “was designed in featureless surroundings but with a fabulous view over the west Algarve coast, which receives the westerly sun in abundance. The project is based on technically evolved solutions, with the emphasis on energy sustainability, the use of geothermal power and an integrated domotics system. The building was designed on the basis of lightness and it rests on an exposed concrete base, balanced over landscaped terraces and the water features (swimming pool and lakes). The gardened roof accentuates this concept. The entrance is over a suspended concrete walkway. On reaching the upper storey we grasp the fluidity of the space containing the sitting room, kitchen and the large double height area, where a reflecting pool fills the entire space”. Geometric XV House Overlooking The Polish Wawel Hill

There is an interesting architectural element that stands behind the XV House‘s name. The interior cantilever stairs are based on a reinforced concrete beam, that shapes a distinctive xv sign with the double pillar. Architects from the Polish firm RS + Robert Skitek created the stunning contemporary residence as a response to the carefully chosen site, surrounding views and modern style required. The reduced usage of colors in the facade led to the creation of a uniform design, accentuated by dark elements – the windows and shutters, subtle roof line and vertical set of windows. Easy to spot near Cracow, Poland, this collection of white volumes gathered in a residential construction were designed to make the 475 square meters of interior spaces compact and easy to live in without losing the freedom of living in a large, open and bright space.

Located on a residential district near Cracow, this modern residence located at the highest point of its street overlooks the Wawel Hill and the mountains, creating a fascinating series of views from the large glazed side. Contemporary Beach Cottage Overlooking Laguna Beach

This large, modern beach cottage named Temple Hills Residence was designed by Schola Architecture as a skin for the old existing 1950s house in Laguna Beach, California. By reinterpreting the architecture of a beach cottage and transforming the design lines into contemporary expressions of a modern lifestyle, the architects constructed a home prepared to offer its inhabitants the comfort and views they desired. The 5,000 square foot property is located on a sloping site, challenging the architects to come up with modern solutions for constructing the additions of this beautiful home. The terrain helped in constructing a house with different levels, each accentuated in a unique way. Easy access to all levels ensures the owner and guests move freely around the house and benefit from beautiful views of the surroundings. According to Schola Architecture, “at the heart of the stainable strategies employed throughout the home is the reuse of the entire existing home. In addition, solar orientation, deep overhangs and operable glass allow the house to breathe throughout the year with little mechanical assistance. The palette is a mix of renewable and exposed building materials, eliminating the need for secondary finishes.”
