Original Mix Between Small Hotel and Private Apartment Rental: Flattered

Presented to us by Welcome Beyond, Flattered is a mix between a small hotel and a private apartment rental, located in the historical city of Porto. The project features 5 modern apartments in a building featuring a mix of vintage furniture and illustrations by up-and-coming Portuguese artists adorning the walls. All apartments were open spaces originally and the idea was to have the flexibility to accept more than two people in each apartment, basically offering an extra bed without intruding into the space.

The solution was to install wooden boxes that are a little higher than the floor, with a drawer bed that is concealed underneath and can be pulled out. According to the owner of the unusual apartments, Flattered is an attempt to create something cozy and warm, different from the hotel chains. A place where people can feel at home, yet at the same time they can experience cool design. The apartments are fully equipped to be self-catering. They have kitchens with all the appliances one needs as well as unique items that aren’t standard. [Photos and information provided via e-mail by Welcome Beyond]

Original Chair Design Inspired by Temporary Market Coverings

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance had an unusual source of inspiration when designing the chair “Market” for the publishing house Petite Friture. The minimalist piece is partially mimics the structures and wood slats that form market stalls: “This project comes from one of the few places that makes the link between all social strata of a city, a village market. The market is also the only space that binds directly to the producer and the consumer and which constantly reminding us of our communication needs, meetings, exchange and simplicity. ”

The chair is composed of a solid structure and a wooden covering with slats, mounted on cork. According to the designer,”the slats fall naturally and freely on the rear of the backrest thus accentuating the distinction between the two elements of Market”. We personally appreciate its elegance and find it very easy to adapt to a variety of modern interiors. What do you think of this market-inspired chair?

Energy and Diversity Inspired by Original Apartment in Moscow

Designer Alexander Akinkyn came up with surprising design solutions for a home remodel in Moscow. The 13 Fox Masques Apartment was initially built in the mid 90s and therefore displayed a common layout and out-of-date arrangements. Discovered on Afflante, the recently transformed house is a fascinating mix of colors and textures, resulting in a fresh atmosphere throughout its interiors.

The core of the apartment is a living room with tall ceilings, invaded by light from generously-sized windows. Two large human face mask chairs in bright orange dynamize the interior, contrasting the gray sofas and complementing the golden chandelier. A classic kitchen in gray with plenty of storage space and a traditional dining area add extra charm to this apartment in Moscow. Although most elements seem to contrast each other, the overall design is harmonious and inspiring. See any details you would like to emphasize on?

Original Modern Circular Villa in Cyprus: Loukas Residence

Presenting an unusual round shape, the Loukas Residence envisioned by Vardastudio Architects & Designers in Paphos, Cyprus caught our attention. The architects explain that the client’s wish for a “round house” came as a surprise. But overcoming all challenges, they managed to develop a round shaped concrete building, with a semi detached rectangle entrance. In the middle, there is a semi-circular modern outdoor swimming pool partially mirroring the villa.

According to the official description, “the house has a natural flow, it is spacious and structure is characterized by total simplicity. The plot is in a busy road, so the semicircle acts like a natural road boundary. Internal, everything is rotated around the semicircle pool that acts as a referee point of the whole project, as it can be seen by every spot in the house. By that semicircular volume, under-hangs a wooden one, where the office is. By that way the visual view of the circle is interrupted“. How would you comment on its original architecture?

Ingenious Apartment Design in Italy Revealing Original Layout Ideas

Gianluca Fanetti, lead designer of Studio Fanetti completed a rustic-meets-modern apartment in Campodolcino, Italy. Abounding in wood, the interiors of this contemporary home resemble those of a modern chalet, wouldn’t you agree? Due to the unusual height of the walls, the design team decided to split the space, creating two functionally separate levels. The bottom floor consists of a generously-sized living area, also hosting a small kitchen and an elegant dining table.

The visual flow continues to the sleeping area where a central staircase divides the two bedrooms and leads upstairs towards an original looking home office. According to the official project description,“in the study and construction of this apartment, particular attention was paid to the combination and processing of materials: larch wood wax, as well as stone slabs in large format tailored to the floors and antique iron beams with treatment acid to the backbone of the loft“. We appreciate the creativity invested in this versatile space and we are curious if it made an impression at your end.

Playful and Artistic Fusion Tables for Original Interiors

Designer Matthew Robinson came up with an interesting idea for his final project at the Leeds College of Art in England. Fusion Tables are his way of combining aesthetics and functionality into a furniture duo that ranks high in terms of originality. The use of two colors gives life to the design and one of the legs of each table appears to be “dripping off”, creating an interesting visual effect .

According to the designer, the solid wood tables were manufactured by hand in American Walnut and Maple. Their almost cartoon-like appearance brings a sense of fun into an everyday piece of furniture. We appreciate the originality behind this design (discovered on Beautiful Life), as well as its practicability. Easy to integrate in a large variety of modern interiors, the Fusion Tables seem to inspire an artistic vibe, meant to enhance the feel of a room. Find them as interesting as we do?

YouTube Japan adds new ‘original content’ channels: Trains, horror and drawing on faces
We’ve seen our fair share of out-there Japan TV programming — and that looks likely to increase. YouTube has struck a deal with 13 companies that will add original shows and videos to the constantly-growing Japanese library, new videos promised daily. There’s a pretty broad array of partners, with a slight focus on comedy and pop-culture, which should mean a shorter language hurdle for us occasional global viewers. Into high-speed trains? There’s a whole channel dedicated to the Land of the Rising Sun’s unsung tech export. We’ve got Catherine The Thirteenth (computer-generated chat show host, obviously) discussing the convenience of iPads after the break, but if we had a say in future channels, it’d throw in more mechanized beetle tanks and robot hotplate chefs.

Original Architecture Details and Layout Characterizing Casa Natalia in Mexico

Agraz Arquitectos envisioned and developed Casa Natalia, a 565 square-meter property in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. The project showcases quite a few original design features, starting with its original layout. A stairway hints the way towards a ground floor area. According to the architects, this particular element also “leads to the main door, which by being separated from the car entrance, leaves a front plaza for the house that dilutes all frontiers between urban and architectonic spaces“.

“Once inside, the living and dinning rooms offer an extension with an intimate family room and a terrace that can be the perfect social place due to its transforming possibilities: it can be fused or isolated from the rest of the precincts according to the needs and has an independent entrance“. While the facade facing the street is partially shut, the opposite side of the residence displays large windows, opening up the home towards a lovely garden.
