Kröller-Müller Logo, Before and After

Established in 1938 in the middle of National Park De Hoge Veluwe, a little over an hour outside of Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller Museum is home to the second largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world as well as boasting the biggest sculpture garden in Europe. Looking to attract more visitors and raise its profile the museum has introduced a new identity designed by the Amsterdam office of Edenspiekermann.

A rare look at some sketches that led to the solution.

Palette is based on the colors of leaves as they change through the seasons.

[We] developed a dynamic typographic concept and logo that are based on the customer experience inside and outside the museum walls. It is both graphic and sculptural and becomes visible due to the interplay between light and shadow.

Kröller-Müller Logo, Identity, and Exhibit

That poor, old logo was one scroll short on the font menu from being Comic Sans and the whole arrangement and color palette didn’t really help make it much better or indicative that inside there would be world-class sculpture from the likes of Richard Serra. The new logo and identity are all about volume and dimension, exalting the sculptural collection but, through the use of color and typographic flexibility (as you’ll see directly below), the identity can change to become more playful and colorful and promote all kinds of exhibits. The main concept of the “opening” logo and typography may seem simple and/or obvious — at one point or another I think we’ve all sketched something similar for someone — but basing a whole identity on this premise is what makes it unique and relentless. The dimensional texture achieved, especially when different levels of openness are used (as in the Van Gogh exhibit below), are particularly entertaining. If I have one gripe with the work it would be the connected “ll”s in the logo; it seems an unnecessary and distracting device where there is already plenty going on. Nonetheless, a lovely range of work with plenty of possibilities.

The identity has been officially deployed on the exhibit “Vincent is Back”.

Zuckerberg: Microsoft more willing to work with us, still open to a Google partnership

Zuckerberg Microsoft more willing to work with us, still open to a Google partnership

Facebook’s “one more thing” at today’s Graph Search press conference? A search partnership with Bing. Naturally, Google was the elephant in the room after such an announcement, particularly in light of the fact that Lars Rasmussen has strong ties to the company by way of his connection to Maps and Wave. Asked why he opted not to take his business to Mountain View, Zuck told the crowd,

The main thing is that when people share something on Facebook, we want to give them the ability to broadcast things, but also retract them later, and have them be removed immediately. Microsoft was more willing to do things specific to Facebook.

We’ve reach out to Google to get its side of the story. We’ll let you know what we hear.

Brain pacemakers show promise in Alzheimer’s trials, might open new treatment possibilities

Brain pacemakers show promise in Alzheimer's trials, might open new treatment possibilities

Deep-brain electrical stimulation has been around for awhile — rousing folks from comas and helping researchers find new ways to treat OCD, depression and maybe even obesity. Now doctors are testing the so-called “brain pacemakers,” on Alzheimer’s patients and the results are promising, but not conclusive. After a year of treatment, six patients showed higher glucose consumption in PET scans of the learning and memory areas of the brain — a change that is associated with increased neuron activity. Glucose metabolism typically decrease as a result of the disease. Researchers are seeking more patients for the trial, and are optimistic that the technique could one day be used to stave off some of Alzheimer’s debilitating symptoms.

BBM 7 beta is open now, adds Voice feature for free calls over WiFi

BBM 7 beta is open now, adds Voice feature for free calls over WiFi

RIM’s BlackBerry 10 launch isn’t scheduled until January 30th, but BBM faithful can try out a new feature on their existing handsets — voice calling. Brand new for BBM 7 it lets users bypass the text chat their thumbs have been used to and directly talk via the service, as long as they’re connected to a WiFi network, no 3G / 4G allowed. That connection restriction takes some of the shine off, but BlackBerry users traveling to / living in far locales with minute-restricted SIM cards or less reliable infrastructure make make the most use of it. Voice allows for direct initiation of calls, switching from text chat to a call, using both in split screen and has an indicator to let users know when their friends are open for a chat. That’s not the only BBM 7 upgrade however, as the service is now deeply integrated with one BlackBerry ID, which backs up their profile, groups and contacts for easy switching to a new device. Currently BBM 7 is available in beta for BlackBerry OS 6 or higher devices, with support for BlackBerry 5 planned “at a future date.” If you’re interested, hit the Beta Zone to sign up for access at the link below, or check out the press release after the break for more details.

In Brief: Brooklyn Nets Open

In Brief

By now pretty much everyone knows I’m not the biggest fan of the Brooklyn Nets logo. I’ll admit that, despite my regard for the execution of the logo(s), the approach and strategy are right on cue, if a little too hip-hop for its own good — feelings captured ever so by this “Open” that plays across the arena during player introductions at home games. Created by Los Angeles, CA-based TheFamousGroup with an original song, called “Brooklyn” (what else?), by ex-Fugee John Forté, “The film adheres to the Nets’ iconic black & white branding, shot entirely in b&w and featuring players dressed in white shirts and black suits and ties.” Kinda catchy and cool, although at points it’s hard to remember if you are watching an ad for an NBA team or a men’s fashion line. You can see a full-screen optimized version here.

Seed-sized A*STAR antenna could open the door to 20Gbps wireless

Seedsized ASTAR antenna could open the door to 20Gbps wireless

Antennas have often capped the potential speed of a wireless link — the 450Mbps in modern 802.11n WiFi routers is directly linked to the use of a MIMO antenna array to catch signals more effectively, for example. That ceiling is about to get much higher, if A*STAR has anything to say about it. The use of a polymer filling for the gaps instead of air lets the Singapore agency create a 3D, cavity-backed silicon antenna that measures just 0.06 by 0.04 inches, roughly the size of a seed on your hamburger bun, even as it increases the breakneck pace. The new antenna generates a signal 30 times stronger than on-chip rivals at an ultrawideband-grade 135GHz, and musters a theoretical peak speed of 20Gbps — enough that 802.11ac WiFi’s 1.3Gbps drags its heels by comparison. Before we get ahead of ourselves on expecting instant file transfers at short distances, there’s the small matter of getting a chip that can use all that bandwidth. Even the 7Gbps of WiGig wouldn’t saturate the antenna, after all. Still, knowing that A*STAR sees “immense commercial potential” in its tiny device hints that wireless data might eventually blow past faster wired standards like Thunderbolt.

Google Fiber is coming on July 26, Kansas readies to open its pipes

Google fiber is coming on July 26th, Kansas readies to open the digital flood gates

We’re always being told we need more fiber in our lives. For most people, that might constitute a second bowl of cereal in the morning — for the lucky Google Fiber-receiving residents of Kansas City (or Kansas City) however, it means big spoonfuls of super fast internet. While the project has been in the virtual pipes for a while, finally it looks like we’re ready for the next step. July 26th, Google advises, is the date for diary. Better pencil that one in, and consider any last-minute hardware upgrades.
