Astro Gaming officially unleashes A30 & A40 PC editions, drops prices to $100 & $150
Astro Gaming’s A40 headset and Mixamp Pro have generally gotten yearly revisions, but the portability-inclined A30 hasn’t received the same love since its inception. That’s officially changed this week, as the company’s announced its 2013 PC editions (standalone versions) of the A30 and A40 stereo headsets are now available. Although the new units began shipping with the company’s Mixamp-packing Audio System bundles last November, this is the first time it’s really blasting the airwaves about the A30′s revision. Both editions feature re-tuned drivers touting better response for bass and cleaner output, along with a re-tooled approach to the quick disconnect cables and a new media cable with a revised inline remote and mic. The revised cabling setup allows 3.5mm cables to plug directly into the headsets, making for easier replacements and swapping (previous versions had you connect to a short cable hung from the earcup, with a dual-pole connector).
Perhaps best of all, the A30 is now priced thirty bucks less at $100 (finally!), while the A40′s been reduced to $149 (down from $199). If you recently purchased one, don’t fret either — Astro also let us know that orders placed the 11th of this month have shipped out with the 2013 editions. GameFly’s digital distribution client officially exits beta, celebrates with free copies of Bioshock
After nearly a year of testing, GameFly is ready to pull the beta qualifier off of its PC game distribution client. The desktop software serves not only as a digital storefront for PC games, but also as a queue management program for subscribers to GameFly’s game-by-mail service. Active members get free access to a few hundred “Unlimited PC Play” titles as well — offering subscribers a wide range of games from Diner Dash to Assassin’s Creed. The official release doesn’t differ from the beta in any significant way, but GameFly and 2K games is celebrating its launch by doling out free copies of Bioshock to anyone willing to give the platform a test drive. Benthem Crouwel Architects have completed the new extension to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. According to the official press release we were sent, the new levitated superstructure contains
“With this reopening the Stedelijk Museum repositions itself as one of the leading arts institutes. It puts Amsterdam in the spotlight as center of artistic renewal and brings new life to the Museum Square, one of the most important cultural landscapes in the world”, stated Ann Goldstein, Director of the Stedelijk Museum. The museum maintains a collection of modern contemporary art and design of 90,000 objects dating from the seventies of the nineteenth century to the present. The historic part of the museum houses the permanent collection, including art from the oeuvre of Karel Appel, Marc Chagall, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. In addition, the museum offers a permanent design presentation including industrial design, graphic design and applied art. The new building offers temporary exhibitions. Ma Bell’s been hard at work on its Watson speech recognition system for years, and 2012 has seen the tech show up in an automobile and a real-time translator app. Months after announcing it would grant Watson’s skills to the developer masses, AT&T has made good on its promise and officially released its Speech API. Boeing officially delivers 787 Dreamliner to ANA, future of air travel finally arrives
It’s the plane so nice, they unveiled it twice. Boeing once again presented its long-awaited and much-delayed 787 Dreamliner to client All Nippon Airways, but this time the goods were officially delivered. After taking the wraps off the airliner early this August, the aerospace company managed to get a flight-ready unit over to its Everett, Washington production plant for a celebratory hand-off. Despite a fit of stops and starts for the line’s rollout, Boeing expects to meet ANA’s order of its future 55-strong fleet, producing an additional 20 craft for the Japanese airline by 2013′s end. If you want to be among the select few to call “First!,” you might want to consider booking that Japan-bound vacation now.

It may have been hard to believe when it was announced back in February, but you can rest assured that Texas Instruments’ new color TI-Nspire CX calculator is indeed real, and shipping right now. Assuming you’re ready to make the jump from monochrome, the $165 asking price will buy you a 3.2-inch 320 x 240 display, 100MB of storage, 64MB or memory, and TI’s new version 3.0 operating system that comes complete with 3D graphing capabilities. Of course, TI isn’t completely breaking new ground here — Casio’s had a graphing calculator with a “high res” color screen since way back in 2010.

AMD said it’s bringing the new heat this week, but, in a classic act of showmanship, it’s teasing out only imagery today and insisting on making us wait until Friday to truly learn what the next generation of Radeon graphics is made of. For now, we have the full titles of its leading lights, namely the Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850, along with plenty of pictorial evidence of their existence in a lab somewhere. We note with glee that the default output arrangement includes no less than five ports, including two DVI, one HDMI (1.4a), and two Mini DisplayPorts. We’d rather the latter two were full-sized, but it doesn’t look like ATI AMD had the room to fit them in. As to power requirements, the HD 6870 will need two 6-pin connectors to augment the juice it gets from the PCI Express port, while the HD 6850 will sate its needs with just the one. Anyhow, enjoy the gallery below and make sure to have your popcorn ready for the benchmark-heavy reviews coming up at the end of the week.

Prototype of robot that develops emotions on interacting with humans officially complete
The first prototype of a robot that can develop emotions as it interacts with a human caregiver has been completed. A team across Europe was led by Dr. Lola Cañamero of the University of Herefordshire in the UK to develop the bot, which differs in several significant ways from those that came before it. These robots develop over time in much the way that a child does, learning to interact with and respond to the human beings around them. Modeled after human and chimpanzee childhood development paths, they are programmed to be highly adaptable to the people around them, and to become attached to whatever person is most suited to its needs and ‘personality’ profile. Over time, the more they interact, the more they learn and bond to the human being. These little ones, moreover, are capable of expressing a wide range of emotions, including anger, frustration, fear and happiness. The next steps are to research the bots’ emotional and non-linguistic behavior, and to move toward combining linguistic and non-linguistic communication to become further attached and adapted to them. Yes, we want one.
