Microsoft planning ‘next release’ of Windows Phone for this holiday season

Microsoft planning 'next release' of Windows Phone for this holiday season

A new job listing over at Microsoft has revealed when the outfit is planning to serve up the next iteration of its smartphone OS. According to the post, work on the current version is being finished up and they’re “getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year.” Presumably, the update will be part of the wider Blue umbrella of tweaks for Windows. Though a vague “next release” doesn’t offer any details in terms of features, it’s likely the OS will carry a significant set of changes as the team in need of a developer is responsible for the Start screen experience, the shell, first party apps and more.

Live from the ‘Connecting the Next Billions’ keynote with Stephen Elop, Gary Kovacs and more

Live from the Connecting the next billions keynote

Mozilla’s Gary Kovacs has been harping on this idea of connecting the next billion or so people to the internet all week — it’s the one of the driving philosophies behind Firefox OS. Nokia is looking to bring down the cost of entry to the mobile web with the 105 and 301. Then there’s operations like Qtel and Bharti Airtel, that provide cellular service across the developing world and in emerging markets. These companies are all looking to put the democratizing power of the web in the pockets of people across the globe and they’re all here at Mobile World Congress 2013 to discuss just how they plan to do that and why it’s so important. To find out what these CEOs, including Stephen Elop, Dr. Nasser Marafih (Qtel) and Sunil Mittal (Bharti Airtel) have to say, check back in at the time below.

LG Display invests $655 million to expand OLED HDTV mass production next year

LG Display invests $655 million to expand OLED HDTV mass production next year

Sure, LG’s current 55-inch OLED HDTV is pretty pricey with a US MSRP of $12K, but that may start to change next year when panel supplier LG Display kicks its new 8G production line into full gear. LG Electronics holds a 38 percent stake in the company and although it supplies screens to many others as well, the next generation of 55EM9700s will likely be a large segment of the displays produced. Although LCD manufacturers ramped up 8G facilities capable of producing six 55-inch displays from one piece of glass in the late 2000s, oversupply caused prices to drop and manufacturing to slow down, including at LG Display.

Now, new display technology is ramping up investment again, which will see this new line installed at its P9 plant in Paju, South Korea at a cost of 706 billion won ($655 million). Based on LG’s WRGB OLED evaporation process, it should be capable of working with as many as 26,000 input sheets per month once it’s up to full speed in the first half of 2014. Chief competitor Samsung showed off “production” OLED HDTVs last year and plenty of demo units at CES with a mid-year release planned, we’ll see if it manages to keep up before / if the tech goes mainstream.

Next Stop: PHL

PHL Logo, New

Founded in 1682, Philadelphia is “one of the leading cities in the world. Located in between New York City and Washington D.C., 40% of the U.S. population is within a day’s drive.” This succinct description — more facts here — comes from the Philadephia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB), the official Tourism Promotion Agency for the city and the primary sales/marketing agency for the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Its mission is to “generate economic impact and job growth by increasing the region’s hotel occupancy and revenues” as well as doing “whatever it takes to attract ethnically diverse regional, national and international convention and tourism customers through creative sales, marketing and communications efforts.” To that effect PHLCVB introduced late last year a new destination brand designed by J2 Design Partnership based on strategy by Ex;it — both local firms.

PHL Identity

Based on the three-letter code of Philadelphia International Airport and the 30th Street Station (the main railroad station in Philadelphia) the new identity adopts “PHL” as its rallying acronym, perhaps in an attempt to build three-letter recognition like its neighbor, NYC, or other distant cities like ATL (Atlanta) and ATX (Austin). It doesn’t roll off the tongue as naturally as any of those, yet, and it works better than the cutesy “Philly”. The design is quite straightforward with PHL in a square and its only distinct feature being a stem-less “P”. It works relatively well. It’s neither completely edgy nor completely boring, caught somewhere in between. The basic logo, in black, starts to feel too business-like but the addition of colorful variations adds some pep for the other features of the city and gives it some flexibility. In the application samples below, the logo seems to work better when bleeding to the edges as opposed to small and centered. The choice of Avant Garde as the supporting typeface is not particularly inspired but it does its job well. Overall, a decent approach and execution.

Next Issue grows iPad magazine library with addition of eight new titles

Next Issue — the service unofficially billed as the Netflix of digital magazines — has just announced an expansion of its catalog, adding eight additional titles to its tablet-based offering. This recent inclusion of big names brings the company’s impressive library to a total of 80 even, letting iPad users now peruse the likes of New York Magazine, Food & Wine and Men’s Fitness, just to name a few. Pricing for both Unlimited subscription tiers remains unchanged, with $10/mo still netting users access to 73 monthly and bi-weekly titles, while the more premium $15/mo service opens up the entire archive. As of now, these new additions won’t work on Android slates, but the company promises “work is underway” to make them available across the board. Hit up the break to check out the official release.

Taking Industrial Materials to the Next Level: IVANKA Concrete Fashion Line

concrete fashion IVANKA 2 Taking Industrial Materials to the Next Level: IVANKA Concrete Fashion Line

This post is dedicated to all of you out there with a strange passion for… concrete. We’ve seen many examples of concrete furniture on Freshome, it is time to take it up a notch and present this incredible fashion line by Budapest-based design company IVANKA. According to the studio’s official description, their entire work is based on the versatile nature of CONCRETE, “main material chosen for creative expression through discovering unexplored attributes”. Concrete Genezis is the name of this new clothing collection presented in the photos below and based on a new textile that mimics the look of the industrial material.

Most of the designs presented by IVANKA consist of a merger between actual concrete and genuine leather: “Formerly strangers to one another, the introduction between these two materials translates beautifully into these eye-catching and wearable must-have items”. The idea for the intriguing clothing line hit founders Katalin Ivanka and Andras Ivanka during a photo shooting session in which they wore clothing that had been dipped in concrete and then allowed to dry. Find the designs below appealing?

Nintendo sees next opportunity for Wii success in Latin America, Eastern Europe

“We will continue to sell the Wii,” Nintendo America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime told investors today in a Q&A followup to the company’s big Wii U event in New York City. “In the US, the Wii has sold about 40 million units. We believe that there continues to be an opportunity with the Wii.” However, where Fils-Aime sees the most opportunity may not be where you expect. “I’m responsible for Canada, and Latin America as well,” he said. “We think there’s opportunity in both of those markets, especially Latin America.” The Wii is currently offered by Nintendo in North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe, but not Latin America. The Wii ranges from $140 to $250, depending on what it comes with.

“You can reach price points, you can reach consumers that, candidly, we won’t be able to reach with the Wii U. That’s gonna continue to be an opportunity,” he said. Fils-Aime and Nintendo also have their eyes on Eastern Europe. “On a global base, certainly there are markets in Eastern Europe. There are a number of other markets where if Wii has an attractive price point, it’ll do well.”

He also stood behind the console continuing to sell in its currently available markets alongside the Wii U after the new console launches this November. “We do believe there’s still opportunity for the Wii, and we will continue to sell the Wii side-by-side for some period of time.” Unsurprisingly, he didn’t say exactly how long Nintendo is planning that support, nor would he say if we should expect a price drop for the aging console, but if we had to guess, we’d say “The Wii will drop in price” and “soon.”

Motorola XT890 approved by FCC, may be next week’s 2GHz Intel phone

Motorola XT890 approved by FCC, may be next week's 2GHz Intel phone

As one major event wraps, we look forward to what’s coming up next: Motorola’s Intel announcement. We have a hard time believing we’d see anything besides a smartphone with an Intel chip inside, but the biggest mystery is in what type of phone. Are we going to see something ho-hum, or mind-blowingly awesome? Whatever it is, we think we may have stumbled upon a clue. Motorola’s XT890, which has been rumored to be a global RAZR M with a 2GHz CPU and 897 x 540 screen resolution, just wandered through the FCC with AT&T-friendly 2G and 3G radios. There’s no hint of LTE here, though the FCC doesn’t require OEMs to mention non-US frequencies. The docs, however, indicate that we can expect dual-band WiFi — no word on NFC, but we’d be very surprised if it didn’t make the final cut. The supercharged processor seems almost too good to be true, but we wouldn’t offer up any complaints if there is any truth to the idea.

Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week

Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week

We knew the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D was due to hit NTT DoCoMo at some point this summer, and now we’ve got the full details. You can reserve yours through the carrier from tomorrow, and the proper launch will take place the following week on August 30th. The device will be available in the three colors you see above, and as it recently passed through the FCC, a trip to the US could also be in the cards. But unfortunately, that orange wallpaper is all too harsh a reminder of one that never ventured outside Japan.
