How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

green your home How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

There are many easy, low cost and very effective ways that we can make our current homes more environmentally friendly without breaking the bank. In this article I will talk about the most basic of steps as well as some that are a bit more aggressive, many of which you can start right now. You will be amazed at how much energy you can save by taking the even simplest of steps!

green your home heat savings How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

Turn down the heat.

The easiest thing we can all do is monitor our thermostats. In the colder, winter months it is imperative to heat the home only when you are there. For example, if you are out of the home during the workday, then keep it to a minimal setting. Today’s homes heat fairly quickly and a few minutes of discomfort as your house warms up can greatly affect your heating bill and energy consumption. When you and your family are asleep, be sure to turn the thermostat back down. If your thermostat is not currently on a timer, you should look into having one installed.

This will help keep the house cooler when no one is around and warmer for when you are around without you having to remember to change the settings on a continual basis. Every degree of heat below 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius)  during the winter months will save you approximately 3 – 5% in your energy bill. Nearly half of your home’s energy comes from heating and cooling. Clean your furnace’s filter once a month. If your furnace is an older model, and you plan on being in your current home for a while, you may want to invest in a newer furnace. The newer models are about 25% more efficient.

Other ways to keep your home warm during the winter months involve just a few simple and basic steps. Check your windows and doors for drafts and caulk as necessary. Make sure your attic and walls are well insulated. Schedule regular maintenance checks for your furnace to ensure optimal performance.

green your home air conditioning How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

Keep it cool.

During the summer months it is best to keep the thermostat set to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 Celsius).   Air conditioners use a ton of energy and electricity and their use should be kept to a minimum whenever possible. Standing fans, window fans and ceiling fans are all much better choices. During the day you can keep the house dramatically cooler by pulling down all shades and curtains.

Whether you are building a new home, or you’ve been in yours for a while, consider adding deciduous trees and shrubs to the outside of your house to provide more shelter from the sun’s blistering rays. If you must use air conditioning, especially if you live in areas that are tropical or where humidity is an issue, consider replacing your older models for those that are more energy efficient. If you have central air, turn it off when you are not at home and set your thermostat to a timer.

green your home water savings1 How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

Save water.

It may seem so simple and likely you have heard it over and over again, but really you should turn the water off when you are brushing your teeth. For each time you brush and the water is off, you save 4.5 gallons of water. Likewise your morning shower can sabotage your water bill. By simply changing a shower head with a low-flow model you can save 15-25 gallons of water a day.

It would be wise to also install low-flow toilets and add aerators to all your faucets. In the kitchen add a water filtration system (such as Britta) to your faucet and refill your own plastic recyclable water bottles which will reduce your plastic water bottle consumption, hence fewer bottles floating around.

green your home lighting How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

Light up your life.

Replace current incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones. Try to replace as many as possible. Just one light bulb swap will save over 400 pounds of greenhouse gasses. In some countries, incandescent light bulbs are no longer permitted. Turn off any unused lights. This may seem obvious but so many people still walk out of a room and leave the light on behind them.

If you are like me and don’t like coming home to a dark house, instead of leaving a light on all day or all night long, place a lamp or two on a timer set to the times you would like the house lit. Not only do I dislike coming home to a cold, dark house at the end of a winter’s day, but I like to keep my house lit when I am not home – I like to give the impression someone is home even if they are not. I feel safer that way. (For more on home safety read my piece here.)

green your home new appliances How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

In this case newer is better.

If your appliances are older you may want to consider replacing them with newer, more energy efficient models. This makes sense, not only if you plan on being in your home for a long time, but also if you plan on selling it in the near future. New appliances are very attractive to home buyers. Either way you will get your money’s worth as well as save on your electric bill.

Do look for appliances with the Energy Star logo on them. If just one in every ten homes, according to the Energy Star website, used an energy efficient appliance, the energy saved would be the equivalent of planting 1.7 million acres of trees. Do unplug any unused appliance. If you have an extra refrigerator in your basement or garage that are not being used, do unplug them. If they are being used check to see what’s inside them. Can these items be brought inside and placed in your kitchen refrigerator?

greener home home renovations How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Without Breaking the Bank

Renovations.

If you plan on doing any significant work to your home, home improvements or renovations be sure to look into all the possible environmentally friendly options out there. If you are planning on painting use a low VOC (volatile organic compound) paint. In the bathrooms opt for fixtures that save water and energy. In the kitchen choose materials for counters and floors that have been recycled or are organic and earth friendly such as cork and bamboo. Your builder or contractor will be up to date on all the latest, “green” technical advances.

Researchers print biometric sensors directly on skin, make wearable health monitors more durable

Researchers print biometric sensors directly on skin, make wearable health monitors more durableMC10 might be best known for its wearable electronics aimed at athletes, but the company also makes a medical diagnostic sticker called a biostamp. Its creator (and MC10 co-founder), John Rogers has refined that design so that it’s no longer an elastomer sticker — now he can apply the biostamp’s thin, stretchy electronics directly on human skin, and bond it with commercially available spray-on bandage material. By losing the elastomer backing of the original biostamp and applying the circuits directly to the skin, Rogers and his team at the University of Illinois were able to shave the device’s thickness to 1/30th of the (already quite thin) biostamp. That super thin profile means it conforms even better to the contours of human hide and makes it shower- and swim-proof during the two weeks it lasts before being naturally exfoliated with your skin.

For those unfamiliar with what the biostamp does, it’s a mesh of circuits and sensors that can record electrophysiological data like skin temperature and hydration state of the wearer. The new biostamp won’t be in your doctor’s tool box any time soon, however, as Rogers and his team are still refining the wireless power and communication technologies it leverages. Of course, once those problems are solved, there’s a good chance we’ll see MC10 turning it into a commercial product.

Recon teases new sports head-up display for sunglasses, promises more info this summer

Image

Anyone who’s ever had a nice brisk bike ride through a snowstorm is likely to cringe a bit at the above image. Though the gentlemen pictured is looking forward to the summer season for other reasons — that’s when the Recon heads-up display he’s testing is set to get a bigger reveal. In the meantime, we’re stuck staring at the above image of HUD-equipped sunglasses and wondering precisely what it all means — aside, of course, for the company’s move off the ski slopes.

Demanding More

Demand Media Logo, Before and After

Established in 2006, Demand Media is a “leading digital media company that informs and entertains one of the Internet’s largest audiences, helps advertisers find innovative ways to engage with their customers and enables publishers to expand their online presence.” They manage the immensely popular sites eHow and Cracked as well as livestrong.com and indieclick.com, among other smaller sites and services. This month Demand Media introduced a new identity designed by San Francisco, CA-based Manual.

Our new brand identity is all about demonstrating how Demand Media is a touchpoint in people’s real lives.

We connect people to content that’s relevant to them.
We connect businesses to the web.
We connect brands with people and people with brands.

This is what our branding is all about–connecting, serving as a touchpoint, and meeting people where they are.

Demand Media Logo and Identity

The old logo was interesting, despite its poor shading and Flickr-esque color palette, communicating connections and intersections. The new logo is a simplified version of that idea with a simple “D” monogram that has a more evident graphic device for connection. Not the most exciting thing in the world but a solid premise executed without fuss. The wordmark is set in Gotham Round and pairs well with the icon, softening the otherwise imposing “D”. Where the identity becomes more interesting is in application, when the connection part of the monogram gets blown up and serves as a framing device for copy.

An important part of our graphic look and feel are the use of arrowheads. The arrows are derived from our logo, and signify connection and action.

Used alongside our bold color palette and angled headline typography, the arrows provide a bold and engaging graphic look and feel to all our communications.

The images above are taken from their brand guidelines (PDF) so there is a lot of Lorem Ipsum — don’t let that distract you. The approach is simple and effective, providing a colorful system to deliver content. It might grow repetitive after a while but for now it gives them a fresh toolset. Lastly, there is a bunch of icons, shown below. Overall, a very appropriate internet-y identity that doesn’t feel too cute or too friendly or, well, too internet-y.

Curiosity rover drills into Martian rock, looks for more evidence of water

Curiosity rover drills into Martian rock, looks for more evidence of water

NASA scientists won’t have to wait until InSight’s 2016 drilling mission to see what lies beneath the surface of Mars — Curiosity is already on the case. After developing a taste for Martian soil late last year, the intrepid rover has started exploring the red planet’s bedrock, drilling a 0.63 inch (1.6 cm) wide hole 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) deep into Mars’ surface. Curiosity will spend the next several days analyzing the resulting powder in hopes of finding evidence of a once-wet planet. The shallow hole marks the first drilling operation ever carried out on Mars, and getting there wasn’t easy. “Building a tool to interact forcefully with unpredictable rocks on Mars required an ambitious development and testing program,” explained Louise Jandura, the chief engineer of the rover’s sample system. “To get to the point of making this hole in a rock on Mars we made eight drills and bored more than 1,200 holes in 20 types of rock on Earth.” The Rover tested its drill by creating a shallower hole earlier this month, though samples will only be used from the second, deeper cavity. Check out the source link for more images of the operation, including an animated GIF of the drill in action.

More Counter Space While Protecting Your Favorite Books: One-Two Table

one or two table living room More Counter Space While Protecting Your Favorite Books: One Two Table

We all like books, We all like to read. We all then throw the books back on our tables. An action as simple as this, is the idea behind the One-Two table, designed and implemented by studio ehoeho . Creating more counter space,  while effectively tucking your books away emphasizes the relationship between Function and Space. They should never be compromised. The table was a direct result of personal experiences (and frustrations).

With countless tables that became an almost parasitic host of magazines, books, car keys, wine glasses and anything in between, The One-Two re-defines the Coffee Table, making it a conversation piece where one can place their favorite books, magazines or old music records (or even hide laptops) in the vertical spaces. Place your drinks on, or your feet up and enjoy the night! [Photos and information received via e-mail by Endri Hoxha from ehoeho studio]

Neo Geo X still in production, Tommo plans to add ‘more games, peripherals and software updates’

Neo Geo X still in production, Tommo plans to add 'more games, peripherals and software updates'

Despite reports claiming that Tommo Inc’s portable re-launch of the Neo Geo had ceased production, that is apparently not the case. “There has been a recent rumor about the end of the production of the NEOGEO X System. This rumor is incorrect,” Tommo told us in a statement. The reports apparently stem from ending production of the Limited Edition Neo Geo X Gold System, which Tommo says, “was always planned to be a limited edition product.” Beyond just continued production of the standard model, Tommo adds that it’ll be supporting the device with, “more games, peripherals, and software updates.” The Limited Edition, however, will likely start to disappear by some point in April, when the company expects final stock to begin shipping. “Given the popularity of the NEOGEO X format, we don’t expect this stock to last long,” the company notes. Head past the break for the full statement.

There has been a recent rumor about the end of the production of the NEOGEO X System. This rumor is incorrect. Tommo will be continuing to support the NEOGEO X format going forward with more games, peripherals and software updates, as well as more units of the console hardware. The NEOGEO X Gold System Limited Edition Collection Series that includes Ninja Masters, was always planned to be a limited edition product. We are currently manufacturing our final run of this Limited Edition Collection Series and our distributors worldwide expect to have the final stock in April. Given the popularity of the NEOGEO X format, we don’t expect this stock to last long.

We are absolutely delighted with how the NEOGEO X has performed so far, and are incredibly grateful for the support of gamers and we are looking forward to continuing the development of this game platform.

Zuckerberg: Microsoft more willing to work with us, still open to a Google partnership

Zuckerberg Microsoft more willing to work with us, still open to a Google partnership

Facebook’s “one more thing” at today’s Graph Search press conference? A search partnership with Bing. Naturally, Google was the elephant in the room after such an announcement, particularly in light of the fact that Lars Rasmussen has strong ties to the company by way of his connection to Maps and Wave. Asked why he opted not to take his business to Mountain View, Zuck told the crowd,

The main thing is that when people share something on Facebook, we want to give them the ability to broadcast things, but also retract them later, and have them be removed immediately. Microsoft was more willing to do things specific to Facebook.

We’ve reach out to Google to get its side of the story. We’ll let you know what we hear.
