Modern Countryside Residence in South Korea: Living Knot
Polymur Architecture have recently completed the development of a highly modern residence, situated in a rural agricultural village of Gangneung. The project is described as a modern interpretation of a traditional Korean villa with linear volumes to maximize the contact with external spaces. Its name- Living Knot- suggests the junction of the two main volumes, emphasized by the use of different materials.

The residence is not just divided visually, but also functionally: “The two rings of volumes sharing the circulation space of the house separate the private living spaces and the more public area within the house. In the design process, the interaction between them produces a certain indeterminacy which triggers spontaneous use of space.” Each interior is characterized by a large amount of openness, one of the main features “borrowed” from the traditional Korean villa design. Intriguing Two-Volume Modern Residence in Germany: Studio House
With two distinct volumes visually separating the public and private spaces, the Studio House in Wenzenbach, Germany is interesting to observe from a variety of standpoints. The residence was developed by German architectural firm fabi architekten bda and was cleverly adapted to an uneven terrain. Partially hidden from the street, the house seems to follow the topography of the hillside, descending in spectacular modern lines.
The aim was to create “a home like an archetype. As a prelude to the castle “Schönberg” from the 12th century at the Wehrgraben, on the site of a former guard house. The house consists of two building volumes: one homogeneous, black saddle roof building lying turned and cantilevered on a white flat roof box”. The upper volume accommodates the social area, a generously-sized interior for working, thinking, talking, eating, celebrating, relaxing. Below is where the bedrooms are located, offering the lucky inhabitants extensive forest views.

Striking Modern Home With Simplistic Decorations in Melbourne, Australia
The New Old residence is a project completed in 2012 (Melbourne, Australia) by the bright architect, Jessica Liew, which tried to create a home that is both luminous and intimate. Jamie Diaz-Berrio, the photographer, was also very involved in the process, surprising some of the most gorgeous sides of the New Old. The project spreads over 360 square meters and it combines elegantly the classic brick walls and the stone pavements with modern furniture and finishings. Perceived as an open space, its living room offers a stunning view over the interior garden, a picturesque view all the way, because of the small fountain, perfectly integrated into the landscape.
Its striking simplicity gives birth to a floaty environment, that allows you to breathe. The uncluttered atmosphere is somehow the result of following the streams of a simple design line and eliminating from the very beginning all the unnecessary décor elements. In defining the house have been used plenty of natural materials such as bluestone, timber and marble. The result is an impeccable, neat and relaxing home, that is strongly connected with the environment. What do you think of it?

Neat Family Home With Sprinkles of Modern Decorations in Regensburg, Germany
Zwischen-Raum, a house from the early 1900s has been recently renewed by the German design studio, Fabi Architekten. The residence is composed of two different structures sticked together through a “glass bridge”. The original house did not suffer major transformations, due to its origins (the house is perceived as a historical heritage), but the new structure is the extra-space the inhabitants needed to feel good and enjoy the benefits of an uncluttered environment. The house is located in Rogensburg and it spreads on 198 square meters.
Zwischen-Raum residence is surrounded by a beautiful garden, offering a relaxing view. The interior is nice, neat and bright, thanks to the glass transitory area, that allows light penetration from both sides and from above. The new structure is much more vibrant and luminous. The all-white interior creates the feeling of a floaty, relaxing ambience. Despite the “traditional” exterior, the original structure is very modern decorated, following the streams of minimalism. Away from the hectic city vibe, the Zwischen-Raum house is the perfect place to forget that stress exists.

Inspiring Bedrooms for Boy and Girl in Modern Slovakian Crib

Slovakia is one of the east block’s countries recently coming alive in terms of quality architecture & design. Rado Rick Designers sent us an inspiring project consisting of rooms for a 6 years old Star Wars fan and a 2 years old princess. The main wish of the parents was to create living spaces which would keep the kids attracted even through puberty. Moreover, the father is a big gamer and Star Wars fan too, so he wanted his son to have this superb room to spend time and play PC games with him together.

All the furniture is custom designed; the picture on the wall in the boy’s room is real handwritten graffiti. The library was also tailored to fit into a fully furnished space, as the customer wanted to divide their kitchen from the living room area, while keeping the ability to watch over their kids. Imposing Modern Architecture in Sri Lanka: Chamila & Rohitha House

This project presented to us by architect Channa Horombuwa is a conversion of a half-way done ordinary-looking house in Dompe, Sri Lanka into a contemporary piece of architecture. The house was at the half way mark, without a roof but with a collection of raw brick walls and slabs, when the client realized that the outcome of the house was not going to be what he has been expecting. The new residence now consists of five bedrooms, three bathrooms, large living, dining, pantry, TV lobby and kitchen. The Gym is a separate section located next to the pool.

The large living room with a double height opens out to the large front garden on one side and to the swimming pool and deck on the rear side. The intension was to maintain the outdoor indoor relationship very effectively with the use of large glazed panels. The entrance lobby or the stair lobby is once again a double height space with a floating staircase running in one stretch as a feature on one side against a textured colored wall with a series of glass openings at random sizes. The garden runs around the house and joins the swimming pool at the rear end. The glass floor above the deep end of the swimming pool is a special feature and a popular seating space for the visitors. [Photos and information provided by architect Channa Horombuwa]

Flexible Modern Architecture: Surprising Narrow House in Japan

It is always fascinating to observe Japanese architecture in its most flexible sense. Fujiwaramuro Architects have completed the design for Narrow House, a project that seems to defy the laws of space, located in the downtown residential area of Kobe, Japan. The total area of the site of 36.95 square meters meant a good challenge for the architects, which ingeniously built living space vertically.

Despite its name, the inhabitants can enjoy their space, just like in any other horizontally-developed residence: “The slatted, drainboard-like floors on the first through third floors are connected to the slatted tables, stairwell and skylights, allowing sunlight to reach right to the bottom of the house. Three-dimensional gaps and holes in the visual field eliminate any sense of a two-dimensional spatial narrowness, or sensation of being fenced in“. Would you consider living in a home like this? Except for the lack of courtyards, we have to say we fail to see the disadvantages.

L-Shaped Modern Family Home in Bangkok, Thailand: YAK01 House

A small modern family in Thailand commissioned the creative team at Ayutt and Associates Design to develop their dream home in Bangkok, Thailand. YAK01 House is an imposing L-shaped building, alternating open and closed spaces and benefiting from outdoor space. Inspired from the layout of a Thai traditional house, the project makes the most of the central courtyard, which functions as a foyer before accessing the main living area.

Structurally and functionally, the residence is described by the architects as follows: “The main living space is located in the center as the floating pavilion where the family can enjoy the outdoor garden and swimming pool. The master bedroom upstairs is entirely cantilevered over the whole length of front foyer. It is designed in a cubic shape to create feature architectural element. The other two bedrooms are located on another side of the house by extending on top of the swimming pool on a cantilevered concrete slab enclosed by a big glass wall with black aluminum cladding“. A generously-sized swimming was positioned parallel to the building in order to direct cool air into the house.

Beach House in Peru Hosting Inspiring Modern Design: Casa Viva

Interesting to observe from a variety of standpoints, Casa Viva designed by Gómez de la Torre & Guerrero Arquitectos showcases an inspiring design. The architects stated that this beach house in Playa Gaviotas, Canete, Perú “allows natural light to uncover it, showing different shades based on the time of day and according to the position of the sliding enclosures or the large openings”. Sounds appealing?

From afar, the rectangle-shaped residence inspires tightness and does not reveal the true nature of the interiors. Once inside, a potential visitor is likely to feel overwhelmed by the spacious and bright rooms, typical for a holiday escape: “The spaces of the house work jointly or fully independently, according to the needs of the moment, spread over three levels with autonomy and unfolding chronologically according to the needs of different users. It is a house with rooms that revolve around a large central space with sliding closure located on the lower level, where coverage is made out of aluminum and polycarbonate which graduates the level of incidence of the sun and cross-ventilation”. Have a look and tell us what you think!
