Multimorphic shows off its modular, open-source P3 Pinball machine at SXSW

When we spoke to Gary Stern way back in January at CES, the pinball exec let it be known that his was the only company currently producing pinball machines — and while that may be accurate so far as actual shipping systems go, there are a handful of startups looking to get into the game. One of the more compelling examples we’ve seen is the offering from Multimorphic, a local company showcasing a prototype at SXSW Interactive’s Game Expo.
The P3 is interesting for a number of reasons. First, and arguably most importantly, is the modular nature of the machine. If you take a look at the (still unfinished) sides of the cabinet, you can see a big slit down the center, where the top can be lifted off and replaced — since the machine is targeted toward home users, there’s no concern about vandalism there. The idea is to essentially offer a platform to both developers and at-home hackers to create their own games atop what is essentially a clean slate.

Roto-a-Matic retro vending machine injection molds toys while you wait (video)
The advent of 3D printing is most certainly upon us, and its helped injection molding make the crucial transition from dated tech to a retro novelty. The Roto-a-Matic has recently gone live in toy maker Rotofugi’s store in Chicago, and will create a polyethylene plastic figurine for you in under a minute, provided you feed it a token. Rotofugi and product design company Squibbles INK have given the vintage Mold-a-Rama vending machine a new lease of life, and now they are looking for artists to contribute designs for future molds. Currently a one-eyed dragon designed by sculptor Tim Biskup is on offer for Chicago-based hipsters, but for the wind-averse, a token-to-toy video demo resides beyond the fold.

Alan Turing’s breakthrough machine gets a loving Lego tribute (video)
In the world of technology, having one of your inventions rendered in Lego form is the equivalent of a musician being parodied by Weird Al — it’s a sign you’ve truly made it and tribute to your influence. So, we’re more than a little surprised to see that it’s taken this long for the Turing Machine to be lovingly built from plastic bricks. The heart of this simple logic device is a Lego Mindstorms NXT set, but the soul is in Alan Turing’s genius — a man who was before his time and unjustly persecuted for failing to properly fit into society’s molds. Dutch researchers Jeroen van den Bosand and Davy Landman built the device as a tribute to Turing, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this Saturday. If you’re in Amsterdam you can see the machine yourself at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica’s Turings Erfenis exhibit. Or, you can watch the short explanatory video after the break.

Timber Cabin to House Parking Ticket Machine by Jean-Luc Fugier

Architect Jean-Luc Fugier created a small modern looking building that currently houses a parking ticket machine, a kiosk window, a parking attendants office and a restroom. The project is located outside Aix-en-Provence, France. Here is a description from the project developer: “ The architectural expression of the pavilion was found in the contradiction between controlling and welcoming the public, forming a duality between a plain building that groups the necessary mechanisms for control while realizing that which is necessary to create a welcoming public atmosphere. Driven by the environmental context from which the project is derived as well as the surrounding landscape, we looked at the concept of a cabin. Natural and environmentally friendly materials from local industry that were acquired from nearby businesses and carried out by local labour with remarkable skill demonstrate a real approach to sustainable architecture, from concept to construction. It’s about giving meaning to architecture that is capable of expressing the environmental goals established by vehicle drop-off programs.”. Find it friendly? [Photography by Philippe Piron].

Rube Goldberg Machine to set new world record, bring forth apocalypse
If you’ve never seen the rise and fall of humanity as told by a series of pulleys, levers, and CO2 rockets, now’s your chance — a team of Purdue engineers have built a contraption that not only tells the history of the world through the end of days, but is also a contender for the world’s largest Rube Goldberg machine. The Purdue team’s “Time Machine” catalogs a history of dinosaurs, war, and rock ‘n roll before finally culminating in a cataclysmic inferno and efflorescent renewal in 232 steps — narrowly beating out the previous record of 230 set by Ferris State University in 2010. Impressive, but not officially the “world’s largest” just yet– the team is submitting a video of a flawless run to Guinness World Records to certify the historic thingamajig, hopefully eking out a victory with its two step lead.

Ion Personal Genome Machine: the DNA sequencer with an iPod dock
We’re still struggling to find the speakers on this thing, but Life Technologies’ new Ion Personal Genome Machine does at least have one big advantage over most other iPod docks: it’s… a personal genome machine. Curiously, the company itself isn’t doesn’t seem to be talking up the iPod dock at all, but MedGadget reports that it can be used to explore a genome and check on the status of given sequencing run with either an iPhone or iPod touch. As for the device itself, while it’s still only designed for research use and “not intended for animal or human therapeutic or diagnostic use,” the company does have some pretty grand designs for the future. According to Ion Torrent founder Dr. Jonathan M. Rothberg, the company hopes to eventually do nothing short of doing for DNA sequencing what digital cameras did for photography. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

Road Printing Machine, an Ingenius Concept that Could Rapidly Catch On

We are not familiar with road constructing policies throughout the world, but in our country, this domain has some serious faults. We were quite surprised when seeing this crazy machine. Being able to build 400 yards of road in one day (that is 365.76 meters), the unusual contraption could easily compete with a large team of workers doing the same thing. Which is why we think the Road Printing Machine could have giant implications in the construction business. The invention can build up roads from cobblestone. Apparently, the mechanism couldn’t be easier: as long as the workers keep providing bricks for the machine, aesthetic roads are being produced and carefully laid out on the desired surface. In case you know more details on this mechanism, please leave a comment with more information. Be sure to check out the video and be stunned!

ArcadeDock converts Lenovo laptop into retro gaming machine (video)
Dean Liou, the same fellow responsible for the ToiletPC and LovePC, has just concocted what’s likely his most splendorous mod yet. The ArcadeDock Laptop Dock is a half-height arcade machine, complete with a flame job from a dark corner of 1994, a full-on joystick + large button splay and a secret cabinet for a touchpad-equipped keyboard. Put simply, this rig is designed to hold an IdeaPad Y560, and when plugged in and connected via USB, the controls you’re peering at above function exactly as you’d expect them to. Toss on a couple of your favorite ROMs (Street Fighter II, anyone?), grab a Go-Gurt and settle in — a demonstrative video is after the break, and feel free to tap that Lenovo link below if you’d like to vote this mod up above the competition.
