Soft Textures and Clean Lines: Chalet Gstaad in the Swiss Alps

Chalet Gstaad is a private holiday chalet in the Swiss Alps, designed by Laurence Rouveure of Ardesia Design in collaboration with Amaldi Neder Architects. The objective of building this weekend hideaway was to create a warm, cozy atmosphere using a natural palette of neutral colors and soft textures such as linen and wool. The designer focused on creating pure and clean lines and a sense of unity to the whole of the 380 square meters of this beautiful lodge.

The walls of this chalet are covered in Australian rough timber and the floor is made of Danish fir planks of up to 15m long. In the bedrooms, wool and cashmere fabric have been mounted instead of a headboard to break up the all-wood appearance. The bathrooms are plastered in marmorino (or tadelakt) to create contrast to the wood while keeping to the natural theme. The furniture is a mix of new, contemporary, furniture, traditional pieces and eclectic finds sourced from all over Europe. Clean Lines and Maximized Views Defining Bug Bay Bach House

The creative team at COA in collaboration with Fuchs, Wacker Architekten developed Bug Bay Bach House, a modern residence in Cape Town, South Africa. Built around a central leisure space, the residence ensures a high degree of openness and diverse views from each of its rooms. Clean lines together with timber paneling and deck on the base level ensure a pleasant visual exterior of this modern project located just steps away from the beach.

According to the architects, Bug Bay Beach House was especially designed to “maximize the beach lifestyle and views, while enjoying the duality of the wind protected courtyard pool and garden. Focusing on passive design principles this house is also layered with an extensive sliding timber shutter system that allows the building to be manipulated to suit the changing sun and weather patterns”. The interiors are spacious and bright, paying tribute to minimalist arrangements.

iPhone 5 launches in mainland China and Taiwan today, lines show up as usual
While the iPhone 5′s been out for some time already, it wasn’t until today that our friends in China and Taiwan (along with many other countries) can finally buy the device locally. Since midnight local time, several carriers and shops welcomed customers with balloons, drinks and even musical performance. But with the case of the Apple Stores in China, the lines were much shorter than before as interested buyers have to first make an online reservation, before making their way to the stores once they are notified — a policy no doubt welcomed by residents of the bitter cold Beijing at this time of the year. On top of that, both China Unicom and China Telecom are simultaneously offering the iPhone 5 — with WCDMA or CDMA radio, respectively — alongside several tariff options. In China, the unsubsidized iPhone 5 starts from ¥5,288 or about $850.
Our brethren in Taipei went to check out the various shops today and saw warm reception for the iPhone 5 launch as well, with Chunghwa Telecom getting the most attention, followed by local resellers Studio A and Data Express. Including tax, the Taiwanese iPhone 5 starts from NT$21,900 or about $750 unsubsidized. More pics after the break.

Nook Color gets multimedia upgrade, further blurs the tablet battle lines
Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color is getting a piece of that promised multimedia upgrade. This round features video content from the likes of Netflix and Flixster, access to comics from the true believers at Marvel and a few other tweaks, like the ability to read books in landscape mode, to fully take advantage of that seven-inch display. The update further blurs the lines between the Color, which began life as little more than a color screen e-reader and the recently introduced Nook Tablet, which features souped up internals but an otherwise similar design. The Color is currently priced at $199 — $50 less than the Tablet — and will be getting more software upgrades in the future, including access to music services like Pandora and Rhapsody. Press info after the break.

Swiss Air Lines, Literally

Established in 2002, Swiss International Air Lines (or just SWISS for short) is the main carrier in and out of Switzerland serving 72 destinations in 39 countries with a small fleet of 89 aircrafts — compared to, say, the 200-plus destinations and 700-plus aircrafts of Delta. Last week, SWISS announced a new identity design, and ad campaign, to be rolled out in October that will take over the identity created by Winkreative, dubbed the “cube”. Reportedly, the new work has been done by Publicis and Nose. A comprehensive press kit is available here.
While many of us have developed a strong affection for the present “cube” design, our new logo, which shows a SWISS tailfin with its Swiss-cross emblem, is much more clearly aligned to our positioning as the airline of Switzerland. And, together with a new advertising look, the new logo will enable us to be far more consistent and effective in communicating our “Airline of Switzerland” credentials.
— An interview with Holger Hätty, Chief Commercial Officer of Swiss International Air Lines

Existing livery.

Equation of how they arrived at the new logo.

Ta-…um, dah!
Like almost everyone else — or at least like the 1,487 that have signed up for the Save the swiss cube Facebook group — I found the original SWISS logo and identity to be elegant and sophisticated so it’s certainly sad to see it go away. Especially when the change is to something that lacks both elegance and sophistication. Placed inside a tailfin — because this is for airplane stuffs, you know, so it’s literally “Swiss” + “airlines” — the Swiss cross sits awkward and bulky, creating some very unpleasant counterforms inside the red shape. I am really hoping that airlines don’t start making their logos into tailfins following the lead of Virgin and now SWISS. The typography is fine although obviously way too big, at least in contrast to the old logo, but also in relation to the new icon. Apparently there is a “bold and distinctive new advertising look” coming in October that “will be focused on [their] aircraft, and on their Swiss-cross tailfins in particular” so maybe it will all come together at some point but for now, if their “sign is a promise,” the brand is not very promising.
Thanks to Thomas Mueller for first tip.

Modern Architectural Residence with Clean Design Lines: 19 Housing by A-Cero
Yet another one of A-cero‘s contemporary masterpieces caught our attention. The residence called 19 Housing brings many standing ovations to the architect’s creativity. Featuring public spaces like a lounge, a dining room and a living room at the first floor and bedrooms and other private rooms at the second floor, the house also brings comfort and relaxation with the help of the 80 m2 geometric swimming pool. A basement level shelters the garage and service areas. The Spanish architects built the residence in Madrid, Spain, on a 4000 m2 terrain and covers 1.600 m2 in surface for the three levels. “The structure of this new house is made of clear volumes, straight lines and simple shapes. The house’s front is made of marble travertino and there are many windows in it. Both elements give a lot of lightness to the house.” Special features make the architecture even more spectacular: a glass wall offers amazing and unobstructed views of the outside pool.
