Verizon confirms 12-month Device Payment Plan for phones is launching April 21st
Look: we know many on Verizon aren’t happy that the carrier has revealed plans to lengthen its upgrade intervals right as smartphone update season is hitting full stride. However, there may be a consolation prize. As of April 21st, “some devices” in its smartphone range, not just the existing tablets, will qualify for a Device Payment Plan that spreads out the full costs over the course of a year, letting those who crave the latest mobile hardware (presumably, you) upgrade without either having to sign a contract or pay everything up front. Sounds like a very UnCarrier thing to do, doesn’t it? Not quite, unfortunately. The carrier tells us that these payments sit on top of existing service plans, not inside them — the base service rate won’t go down in year two. T-Mobile will remain the better bargain for anyone constantly replacing handsets, then, but those on Verizon will at least have a degree of freedom.

LG’s IPS monitors head downmarket with 2D-only IPS4 series launching soon
While LCD monitors with in-plane switching technology were once decidedly settled at the high end, LG apparently thinks its time for everyone to have one and is launching its mainstream IPS4 line. Executive VP JJ Lee says the aim is for IPS monitors to become “ubiquitous in every room”, bringing better color reproduction, picture quality and wide viewing angles with them. So far we know they’re slotting in just below the 3D-capable models shown off at CES, but there’s nothing mentioned in the press release (included after the break along with another pic) about prices, sizes, specs or model numbers. If you’re in the market however, expect to find out more soon since they will roll out to Asia first in May, followed by Europe and North America in “the coming weeks”.

Windows Store slowly going global, 26 country specific markets launching with next update
The Windows Store, though still very much in the trial stage, is already growing — and not just in terms of catalog size. At launch, alongside the consumer preview of Windows 8, the Store was only accepting submissions from devs in five different countries and had region specific markets to match. With the next preview release of its upcoming OS, though, Microsoft plans to expand that greatly. Soon enough 33 more nations will be open to submitting apps and the number of country-specific store fronts will jump from five to 26. And, while you’ll still have to submit your apps in one of the 12 certification languages for approval purposes, entries will be accepted in 109 different tongues. This move will require some changes on the backend, of course, to scale globally. So, as part of that transition Microsoft has stopped accepting submissions for Consumer Preview apps. We can only hope the down time is short lived and the next version of the Windows Store (and possibly Windows 8) is hot on its heels.

Mac App Store launching on December 13th?
It’s no secret that the Mac App Store is launching soon. Jobs himself said that it would go live “within 90 days” back when the iOS-inspired App Store was announced on October 20th — that’s mid January, if the timeframe is carried to its fully extent. Now we have AppleTell citing an “inside source” claiming that Apple is trying to launch the Mac App Store before Christmas, specifically targeting December 13th while telling developers to have their software ready by Monday, December 6th. Unfortunately, the Mac App Store also requires an OS update to end users to which MacRumors reminds us that the new OS X 10.6.6 has already been seeded to developers. So yeah, that’s a pretty aggressive timeline if true and likely kicked off with a press event that would also birth Apple’s rumored recurring subscription billing model in support of Rupert Murdoch’s The Daily digital newspaper.

Verizon launching ’4G’ smack talk campaign against AT&T
Never ends, does it? The top four carriers in the US love slinging mud, but the trash-talking between Verizon and AT&T is always particularly vicious — and it’s showing no signs of ebbing. As you might expect, Verizon intends to use its new LTE network as a weapon in the fight, and like both Sprint and T-Mobile, Verizon will be very loudly labeling it “4G” to the ITU’s chagrin. The latest promotional posters compare maps of Verizon’s combined 3G / LTE network with AT&T’s 3G-only network, but considering how limited Big Red’s initial LTE launch is, there really isn’t much difference with what they’ve shown in the past. The posters also proudly proclaim Verizon as having “the fastest 4G network in America,” which is false on at least one level — LTE isn’t really 4G, as we said — and remains to be seen on another. At any rate, as always, it’ll be interesting to see how AT&T responds. Nerd fight!
[Thanks, Kal]
