Detune’s Korg M01D for Nintendo 3DS sparks nostalgia, lands in May (video)
This isn’t the first time a Korg synth has been re-imagined in software form, it’s not even the first (or second) time on Nintendo’s DS. But, when Detune releases its M01D for the handheld console, it’ll spark more than a little nostalgia for synth enthusiasts. Why? Because it’s heavily inspired by Korg’s legendary M1 synth, complete with all its sounds (and yes, the famous piano patch included), plus some new ones thrown in for good measure. The DS version includes a step sequencer (eight tracks with up to 64 steps per sequence) that you can compile together in “scenes.” Borrowing from other parts of the Korg family, the M01D app also offers a KAOSS mode, too, no doubt using one of those screens serving as the touchpad. You can preserve your creativity by saving to SD card, or the usual internet sharing options, and heck there’s even a 3D viewing mode too. Lordy! How that will actually look, we don’t know, or at least we won’t until its May release in Japan. Let’s just hope they do the right thing and bring it to the rest of the world. Pretty please.

Ubuntu lands on Nexus 7 slates with Canonical’s one-click installer
If you’d rather not let your Nexus 7 live out its life as a Jelly Bean-toting device, Canonical’s freshly minted Ubuntu Nexus 7 Desktop Installer can help. Instead of allowing Ubuntu to ride shotgun with Android, the installer requires unlocking the device’s bootloader, which wipes the slate clean. Once the Nexus 7 is unlocked, started in fastboot mode and connected to an Ubuntu machine, the one-click installation software takes care of the rest. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes later, your tablet will be running full-blown Ubuntu. Since development is currently focused on getting the core of the desktop OS up and running, there’s no tablet-specific Unity UI to see here. However, Raring Ringtail is set to flesh out the mobile experience with an emphasis on sensors, memory footprint and battery life, among other features. HTC Flyer lands at Best Buy on May 22nd for $500, Magic Pen sold separately
The 16GB-equipped, 7-inch Flyer from HTC is making its way west this week. Best Buy, which gets the honor of exclusively launching the WiFi-only Android tablet in the US, has revealed Sunday as the official first day of availability for the Flyer, at a price of $500. As you’ll recall, the stylus that ships in the retail box just about everywhere else will be markedly missing from the Best Buy bundle, costing an extra $80 to those who simply must have it. You’ll be able to purchase your Flyer online and at all brick-and-mortar Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores, but if mobile connectivity is more important to you, we’d advise holding out a little while longer for the 3G- and 4G-capable Evo View variety on Sprint.

Nokia’s ex-MeeGo chief lands at Palm?
It looks like design heads at Palm and Nokia have more or less swapped roles, as All Things D reports that Nokia’s ex-MeeGo head Ari Jaaksi has just been hired by Palm — a month after Nokia grabbed Palm’s Peter Skillman to head up user experience and services for MeeGo. Fate? Coincidence? As long as both struggling smartphone companies bring us better devices and improved operating systems as a result, we’re not all that concerned. The rumor also suggests a Samsung VP and several HP executives will be boosting Palm’s team as well.
