Mathematics Applied to Urban Elements: Ingenious Street Art by Aakash Nihalani
Walking the streets and stumbling across a work of Aakash Nihalani can mean a wonderful disruption. Blending mathematics into day to day life led the artist into the fun and playful world of ingenious street art. Entitled Sum Times and discovered on This is Colossal, the carefully executed projects below exude originality. Artist Aakash Nihalani usually creates (modern) art using neon-colored tape in various geometric forms, which is also the case in the works depicted by the photos below.

Everyone can spot simple mathematic formulas in day to day life, but few are those who take advantage of them in a professional purpose. With the help of inspired street art, old building can look cheerful and garbage cans can make one think of something else other than waste. Have a look at how the artist managed to transform some otherwise depressing urban landscapes into creative ones and let us know your thoughts on this particular initiative.

Ingenious Apartment Design in Italy Revealing Original Layout Ideas

Gianluca Fanetti, lead designer of Studio Fanetti completed a rustic-meets-modern apartment in Campodolcino, Italy. Abounding in wood, the interiors of this contemporary home resemble those of a modern chalet, wouldn’t you agree? Due to the unusual height of the walls, the design team decided to split the space, creating two functionally separate levels. The bottom floor consists of a generously-sized living area, also hosting a small kitchen and an elegant dining table.

The visual flow continues to the sleeping area where a central staircase divides the two bedrooms and leads upstairs towards an original looking home office. According to the official project description,“in the study and construction of this apartment, particular attention was paid to the combination and processing of materials: larch wood wax, as well as stone slabs in large format tailored to the floors and antique iron beams with treatment acid to the backbone of the loft“. We appreciate the creativity invested in this versatile space and we are curious if it made an impression at your end.

Ingenious Shelving Units: Hole in the Floor Series by Raw Edges

The collaboration between Yael Mer & Shay Alkalay led to the founding of Raw Edges, a design studio with a clever and original portfolio. For today we chose to present their project called Hole in the Floor and consisting of a series of ingenious shelving units. Based on the idea of things unexpectedly ending (in a physical sense), the unusual furniture pieces resemble vertical drawers which were literally sliced at the bottom. The impression a viewer gets is-as the name of the project suggests- that of a hole in the floor. We not only appreciate the originality of this idea, but its simplicity and elegance as well. The shelves come in a variety of sizes and can be used in both traditional and modern interiors. No mention about their cost on the official website of the designers, but if you are interested in making a purchase, try to contact them here.

Contemporary Residence With Ingenious Architecture Details: 4×30 House

The 4×30 House was designed by CR2 Arquitetos and FGMF Architects and is located in São Paulo, Brazil. According to the information from the official project description, “the story began more as a challenge rather than as an architectural project. How make the entire program of a house fit in that 4x30m lot, relying on a few illuminated surfaces? From the tiny Japanese and Dutch houses, we have borrowed more than the certainty that it would be possible to take advantage of the little space in a creative manner. The search for natural illumination and ventilation conditioned the emphasis on the central garden, cut in the constructed volume in order to create three façades generously bathed in light. United by a footbridge around the garden, two blocks of different sizes organize the functions of the house and require residents to enjoy the green on all displacements. The larger block focuses the living room and kitchen on the ground floor and the bedrooms upstairs; the smaller one contains supporting environments such as service area, office and vertical circulation of the house“. We love the idea of this project are pleasantly surprised by the result. How do you find it?

Digitalize Your Ingenious Ideas in Seconds: Inkling Pen [Video]
![wacom_inkling wacom inkling Digitalize Your Ingenious Ideas in Seconds: Inkling Pen [Video]](http://cdn.freshome.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/wacom_inkling.jpg)
The Inkling Digital Pen was created by Wacom and can turn your “pen on paper” sketches into electronic, vector graphics. What we find truly amazing is that the design allows its users to sketch on any piece of paper! A small receiver attached to the sketch memorizes the data written by the digital pen, which can further be transfered into any computer. According to the producers, “in addition to capturing your sketch, stroke by stroke, Inkling allows you to create layers in digital files while you sketch on paper. Digital files are transferred to your computer using the Inkling Sketch Manager software, and later, exported to applications such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator®. Files can also be opened with the included Inkling Sketch Manager software to edit, delete, add layers or change file formats.” Seen on DVice, the innovative Inkling pen is perfect for registering rough concepts and sudden ideas, for both designers and architects.

Help the People of Japan!+ A Tribute to Japan’s Ingenious Eartquake Engeneering
We would like to use Freshome to make a call to action. We know most of you out there would like to help the people in need in Japan, which is why we will count on your belief in solidarity and recommend a link with a few steps you can follow. From helping people reconnect with their loved ones in the area to forwarding a donation, here is where you can start. In order to be in tune with the content of our sire, we found a video filmed during the massive 8,9 earthquake that struck Japan at 2:46 pm on Friday. We were absolutely amazed to see how the buildings move slightly from left to right while in complete balance. It is not everywhere that seeing something like this is possible, which is why we would like to salute Japan’s ingenious earthquake engineering solutions. (photo via BigChief)

Ingenious Orthogonal Orange Cube with Innovative Architecture
The old harbour zone of French city of Lyon was adorned with a fascinating orthogonal cube into which a giant hole was carved, creating the proper conditions for light, air circulation and views. The Orange Cube project combines spaces for commercial and cultural developments, like the Cardinal Group headquarters or the Design Showroom RBC. The sustainable architecture contains elements that work together to create a versatile space with offices, design showrooms and a large top-floor terrace with astounding views of Lyon, la Fourvière and Lyon-Confluence. Choosing orange paint, Jakob + Macfarlane Architects made a connection to lead paint, an industrial colour often used for harbour zones. The 5 levels of the structure are penetrated by a hole “piercing the building horizontally from the river side inwards and upwards through the roof terrace. In order to create the void, Jakob + MacFarlane worked with a series of volumetric perturbations, linked to the subtraction of three “conic” volumes disposed on three levels: the angle of the façade, the roof and the level of the entry. These perturbations generate spaces and relations between the building, its users, the site and the light supply, inside a common office program.”

A Residence with an Ingenious Architecture: Airhole House in Japan
Airhole House was designed by Masahiro Kinoshita from KINO architects, a Tokyo based architecture company. The unusual looking two-storey home is located in a residential area in Shiga, Japan and features large volumetric gaps in its structure which allow a good natural ventilation. Here is more information from the architects: the main form of the house was dictated by the shape of the site. On the street level, a covered parking spot is generated by carving out an airhole that opens up east to west. The main entrance is also provided through this space. More predominantly noticeable from the main street to the south is the asymmetrical roof line and terrace space on the second level. funneled in form, the open volume accommodates the outdoor veranda and the living/dining/kitchen area. the west wall offers storage while the pie-shaped space to the east houses the staircase, bathroom and washitsu (or Japanese-style room).
