Imposing A-House in Argentina Ranking High in Functionality
When developing the plans for A House in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the team at Estudio GMARQ had to anticipate the needs of the clients: “During the first meetings with our clients, a couple with no children, they made it clear that they had no preconceived idea of how their future house should look like or how it would be.” After several meetings of brainstorming ideas, the perfect lot was found and the building design was achieved taking into consideration all possible situations, from daily life to important social events.

House A is structured on two levels: the ground floor accommodates the public area, visually marked by stone walls on the exterior. The generously-sized social zone connects with a terrace and overlooks the swimming pool. A service zone with garage can be accessed through an opposite entrance. The first floor (delimited by light gray stucco) hosts all private spaces for the couple and their future children.

Imposing Modern Architecture in Sri Lanka: Chamila & Rohitha House

This project presented to us by architect Channa Horombuwa is a conversion of a half-way done ordinary-looking house in Dompe, Sri Lanka into a contemporary piece of architecture. The house was at the half way mark, without a roof but with a collection of raw brick walls and slabs, when the client realized that the outcome of the house was not going to be what he has been expecting. The new residence now consists of five bedrooms, three bathrooms, large living, dining, pantry, TV lobby and kitchen. The Gym is a separate section located next to the pool.

The large living room with a double height opens out to the large front garden on one side and to the swimming pool and deck on the rear side. The intension was to maintain the outdoor indoor relationship very effectively with the use of large glazed panels. The entrance lobby or the stair lobby is once again a double height space with a floating staircase running in one stretch as a feature on one side against a textured colored wall with a series of glass openings at random sizes. The garden runs around the house and joins the swimming pool at the rear end. The glass floor above the deep end of the swimming pool is a special feature and a popular seating space for the visitors. [Photos and information provided by architect Channa Horombuwa]

Imposing Contemporary Residence With a T-Shaped Floor Plan in Zagreb

The highly modern the J20 House in Zagreb, Croatia was designed by studio DAR612 as a “juxtaposition of two elements – a primary longitudinal wing with white finish, and a perpendicular element covered in dark wood coating. A T-shaped floor plan enables maximum south and west orientation, as well as views from both levels”. The residence is surrounded by a courtyard providing just enough space for outdoor leisure activities.
The residence is structured as follows: “A two story-high entry divides the house into two segments connected with a wooden bridge: the east segment is a secondary space with a garage on the ground floor and children’s area on the first floor; the west segment contains the main living spaces and parents’ quarters on the upper floor“. The interiors exude openness and their minimalism is contrasted by warmth coming from the wooden additions. A large swimming pool is located above the living room and can be spotted from other parts of the house as well.

Imposing Atenas 038 House in Brazil by Dayala + Rafael Arquitetura

Studio Dayala + Rafael Arquitetura designed the massive Atenas 038 House, a modern project in Goiânia, Brazil. Occupying a total area of 4,850 square feet, the residence is a giant display of opulence. The side of the project facing the street is partially closed, ensuring a high level of privacy. This gets compensated with a large facade opening up the building towards the swimming pool and backyard. A generous deck provides enough space for lounge chairs and covered area for entertainment. The interiors are imposing and seem to orbit around the open plan, double-hight living room, connected to the outdoor terrace. An elegant staircase leads the way towards the upper floor, where the private areas are located. How do you find the overall design of this modern home in Brazil? Would you consider living in such an imposing home? [Photos by: Leandro Moura]

Imposing Modern Home in Brazil: Casa Acapulco

Casa Acapulco was designed by architects Flavio Castro Arquitectos and is a 3,660 square-foot two-story home is located in Guarujá, Brazil. The house is composed of six squares grouped in pairs. Within this compositional rule, two subtractions were made at opposite ends to form two venues: the garage and playground. The left part of the house provides a continuous living space for the residents, with the help of a succession of rooms and leisure facilities. The metallic self-supporting staircase cuts the succession of rooms at one point, creating a visual filter between the public street and private rear patio. The left side of the property is a modern home addition. Between the two areas, there is a linear space which forms the border between the gradual abundant spaciousness of the rooms on the left and the services zone (the annex) on the right. Weekend Retreat in Brazil Characterized by Imposing Architecture Details

Itu Residence was designed by Maristela Faccioli Architecture and is located in São Paulo, Brazil. The home was especially developed in order to serve as a weekend retreat for the owners. According to the architects, “the land of this residence faces a lake and is neighbor to an area of preserved native forest. Given the program and construction constraints, the architects intention was to implement the constructed area respecting the 30 meters setback from the lake, determined by environmental legislation, meanwhile concentrating the majority of the indoors program in just on block. This was determinant in maintaining the lot as much permeable and green as possible“. The residence has an imposing and diverse architecture; the combination of wood, glass, brick and stone contribute to an interesting appearance. The interiors are characterized by highly modern details and feature minimalist furniture arrangements. See any design elements you find inspiring? Imposing Contemporary Architecture: Fray Leon House by 57 Studio

Organized around the imposing old trees on the property, the H-shaped Fray Leon House showcases a complex contemporary architecture that depicts the modern connection between man-made residences and the surrounding nature: “The interior spaces are organized around a native tree (Cryptocaria alba) that accompanies the access from the south. Through the hall, the presence of an enormous avocado tree (Persea americana) is framed towards the north, and a private wing towards the east is delimited by an old macrocarpa cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and some crape myrtles. Over the central wing, a second private level extends in all of its length, leaving on one end a terrace at the height of the tree’s crowns. On the west wing, the public spaces open towards the northern garden through a porch, and the service areas direct their view towards an ashleaf maple (Acer negundo). The wing of services extends towards the south by means of a roof with an opening that surrounds a native Crinodendron patagua that separates the closed garage from the rest of the house.” Designed by Santiago-based architects 57 Studio, the single-family residence located in Santiago, Chile, displays a modern collection of spaces that occupies three levels.
