Space Shuttle Discovery salutes Washington on historic final flight
As historic flights go, this has to be right up there with the best of ‘em. Space Shuttle Discovery performed a final fly-by over the capital, and created a trail of excited spotters as it did so. Perched atop a Boeing 747, the iconic craft was flying at a relatively low 1,500 feet according to NASA. Pictures of the voyage have been popping up on social media and image sharing sites as it headed in from the west, before coming to its final resting place at a special off-shoot of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport. Have you spotted Discovery? Be sure to add links in the comments if you do.

Environmentally Friendly Residence in Fayetteville’s Historic District

Located in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in the city’s historic district, the Allen Residence features 1,358 square feet plus an additional 2,596 square feet under roof area including a two car carport, a workshop, a screen porch and front entry porch. The two-bedroom residence is home to Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for Fulbright College of Arts & Science, who used the home’s design and building process as an example in her Environmental Communications course. Using passive solar energy and having been built with environmentally friendly materials, the Alden Residence is an example of sustainable modern living. Two simple opposing slope shed roofs with a breezeway in between cover the interior spaces, while the three foot overhangs protect the rooms from too much sun. Designed by Skiles Architect , the house features fiber cement board, galvalume and cedar slates as main building materials and other sustainable elements:” The project earned an Energy Star 5+ certification. Other features include geothermal heat pump with radiant concrete floors, SIP roof panels and a generous screen porch to block the west sun. The cathedral ceilings, with exposed laminated beams and pine decking continue to the exterior porches to blur the line between inside and outside. The narrow footprint allows for natural light to permeate and enliven the interior.”

Film recreation of Soviet cosmonaut Gagarin’s historic spaceflight to be shown off next month
If you know anything about the history of spaceflight, you’re probably already familiar with the historic journey of USSR cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who flew around the Earth in 1961, making him the first person to ever travel beyond our planet’s atmosphere. While audio recordings of Gagarin’s observations exist, there are no video recordings except for those recently shot at the ISS following a similar plot of his trip, directed by Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, who currently lives on the space station. This video has now been matched up with Gagarin’s audio, and made into a film to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his flight, which is on April 12th. The movie will be made available on that date for free download on YouTube.

Gorgeous Residence Combining Historic and Modern Features
Keeping history alive while implementing modern architecture looks pretty easy once we take a look at this next residence. The historical facade was kept intact but the interiors were designed to be a perfect fit in the urban scenery. Built in Melbourne, on a lot that used to be the Richmond Fire Station Stables, the modern dwelling you can see in the pictures is proof that past and future can look good together. The three bedroom house, for sale here, showcases an angular design partly hidden by a stone facade kept intact. An open plan kitchen combined with the dining and living room were constructed on the original part of the building. Beautiful stone walls merge with modern furniture to create an outstanding interior design. Windows, sliding doors and skylights were carefully placed to ensure natural light in all rooms of the house. A rooftop deck offers beautiful panoramas of the city with its 360 degree view. Other features include a two car garage, cellar, gym, second living and study room. Tell us what you think about this creative mixture of styles or if you think something is missing in order to call this home desirable.
