Tactile Brush uses sensory illusions to let you feel games, movies
Poor arachnophobes — it’s bad enough that 3D movies can make it look like swarms of eight-legged freaks are pouring out of the screen, now Disney wants you to feel the creepy crawlies, too. In a presumed effort to one-up those “4D” chairs used at Shrek’s castle down in Orlando, the company has been working on what it calls Tactile Brush — a chair with an array of 12 vibrating coils that are able to simulate anything from the sensation of speeding around a race track to the delicate drip of rain on your back. Two techniques are used: apparent motion, which triggers two motors in quick succession to create the illusion of something moving over your skin, and phantom sensation, in which two stationary vibrations are felt as a single tingle between the two points. Disney researchers demoed Tactile Brush at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Vancouver using a racing game, but hope to bring it to amusement park rides and movie theaters — which, in the right hands, should lead to more screaming and at least a few pairs of wet pants.

10 Tips to Obtaining an Urban Loft Feel in your Home
Recently, the interest in urban lofts has gained popularity amongst urban goers and rural home owners. Exposed flooring and overhead mechanical ductwork bring the contemporary feel of the city to your home. What is it that makes urban loft living so desirable? I think it’s the feeling of a cosmopolitan lifestyle looking over a city with industrial décor with a soft edge interplayed is the appeal. If you want to bring the urban loft feel into your home, follow these 10 tips to feel on top of the world!
1.) Modern furnishings: Minimalistic and modern furniture is the idealistic ‘look’ of an urban loft. Clean lines of seating areas, décor, and few decorative items are key. Use simple forms and allow for plenty of space to walk around furniture to take full advantage of space, height and views.
2.) Exposed heating and air ductwork: Since most urban lofts are inside of warehouses or urban industrial buildings they have been turned into residential spaces and high ceilings are the norm. For heating and air ductwork, leave the pipelines exposed and consider painting black, brown or leave with metallic finish for a truly industrial feel.
3.) Leave floors bare: Urban loft living brings the industrial nature into your daily living with finishes that are exposed, bare and ‘unfinished’. For flooring consider leaving concrete exposed and adding a concrete stain to seal it, and add a patina of color. Hardwood flooring and slate are also typical for flooring. To soften sitting and conversational areas add area rugs to match the décor.
4.) Simple window treatments: The view takes center stage in an urban loft. Ensure your window treatments don’t interfere with the view by choosing simple sheer fabric or sheer blinds for covering. Depending on the height of your home and privacy issues you may not need window treatments. For homes with tall windows consider motorized treatments that are remote controlled.
5.) Open space means less storage: In urban lofts the feeling of multiple rooms occupying one open space is the appeal. Although, when considering storage bookshelves, armoires and storage units will need to be low in height or back up against walls. Take advantage of multifunctional ottomans, storage benches and furniture that doubles as display and storage.
6.) An open kitchen is great for entertaining: To get the urban loft kitchen feel in your home leave one side open to the living and dining spaces. The appeal of urban living is to be able to entertain and interact with your guest while you cook and prepare food and drink. Industrial and professional stainless steel or black appliances pulls the entire look together, coupled with an eye catching range hood.
7.) Artwork and color: Urban living can still have beautiful colors amidst the greys and blacks of industrial finishes. Choose furniture that has punches of color along with colorful artwork to adorn the walls. Add colorful area rugs, throw pillows and decorative décor for table tops and display areas.
8.) Consider lighting: In the daytime natural light pouring into your space is an asset. In the evening hours, ensure you have ample lighting throughout your home. If your ceilings are very high, wall sconces, floor lamps that extend over couches and table lamps should be considered.
9) Multiple levels create the true urban loft experience: For lofts that have the option of having another split level for a bedroom, bathroom or entertaining space have a great experience. To look out over the main living floor and to see great views outside. Remember that this also can be a noise problem for multiple people sharing a loft. In your home, consider this lifestyle before opting for a multilevel – open urban living environment.
10.) Bring nature in: To stay well balanced with nature, bring live plants, running water fountains and nature inspired materials into your urban loft. Even though you feel far above the city below, your home and you will always benefit from nature at hand.
Urban loft living and décor is a lifestyle that many love. While not for everyone, open outdoor spaces are replaced with expansive windows and views over metropolitan vistas. Depending on your lifestyle and your preference for architectural layouts you can bring urban loft details into your home or opt to live in the real deal. Whichever you choose, urban loft living will always have a favorable appeal.

Majestic Private Home in UK with a Highly Modern Feel
We recently received this amazing interior design project from Sybarite, an architectural and design studio founded in 2002. Here are some extracts from the press release they sent us: “This complete refurbishment of a four floor / four bedroom Victorian townhouse in West London’s Brackenbury Village required sensitivity. The brief was to completely gut this wreck of a house and create a very liveable and practical home for this busy family with three young children. Although great design was on the wish list, the house mainly had to become a comfortable family home maximising the usable space and storage. The interior intervention juxtaposes old and new, respecting the Victorian heritage while applying a contemporary intervention which works seamlessly without jarring. The original staircase runs like spine through house, its minimal restoration allowing you to read its age so that it becomes the focal point against which a simple, elegant refurbishment is contrasted. Tying together the modern aspects of the house is the use of concrete, which is utilized in various places, polished as flooring and shuttered to clad several fireplaces throughout the house.

An important element of the brief for this area was to maximise storage so that the whole family could easily share this space without it becoming too cluttered. Deep, floor to ceiling lacquered cupboards run along one whole wall, providing ample space to pack away toys and games so the room can be easily transformed from child’s playroom to relaxed entertaining area for grownups.”

Charming and Bright Apartment with a Homey Feel
Here is a charming three room apartment with great views over Gothenburg, Sweden. Measuring 94 square meters, this place features large, open interiors and inspiring decors. Straight ahead from the entrance hall there is a large living room that serves as a dining area and as a gathering place between friends. The room is perceived as very large and airy and offers various seating arrangements. The ceiling is more than 3 meters tall, which is quite impressive. A curved wall of windows facing the balcony creates a nice contrast with the other straight walls painted in a broken white color. We particularly like the framed Andy Warhol quotes above the dining table and the fresh colorful decorating items spread around the apartment. The balcony offers a wonderful place for taking a hot tea or a fresh coffee in the morning or enjoying a good book. Looks inviting?

Beautiful Sustainable Residence with a Youthful Feel in Australia
Here is a home which manages to combine playfulness with soberness. Designed by Judd Lysenko Marshall Architects, the Ormond Esplanade residence is located in Melbourne, Australia and comes with a highly original architecture. Here is a fun version of the brief of the project from the architects: ” No, they said. Make it Saint Kilda. And, make it light. Make it bright. Make it tight. Add all of the green stuff too, please. And, we want it beachy. Maybe like a boat? And it better be fun. Serious fun.Hmn. How about spotted gum? Or even better, spotty gum…” Not always easy being an architect? Well, in this case we think the team did a great job in meeting the client’ expectations. This building is unique, colorful, alive, and perfect for a family home with kids. Moreover, sustainability is a strong feature of this place, as the house is equipped with solar panels, natural ventilation systems and wide windows of unusual shapes for filling the interiors with natural light.

Enchanting One Room Apartment with a Warm Feel
Here is a beautiful one room apartment located in a historical building in Sweden. Recently renovated, the 51 square meter crib looks very spacious and gives away a warm feeling. The wide, arch windows ensure a large amount of natural light while the white painted walls and blue wallpaper inspire tranquility. The living room has plenty of room for a sofa, a TV stand, a reading corner and a coffee table. In addition, it features a spacious walk-in closet, which is hidden behind beautiful mirror doors, offering excellent storage. And if you thought that bed is placed in a separate room, look closer. Even though it seems isolated in the photos and probably in reality too, the bed is also a part of the living room. The kitchen is all equipped and the dining table also seems to be separated and create its own “micro climate”. Nicely done, don’t you agree?
