DirecTV ‘price adjustment’ will raise rates about 4.5 percent in February
DirecTV announced today that it will raise its prices effected February 7, 2013, with the average customer’s bill going up about 4.5 percent. The card shown above displays the new rates (hit the source link to see them all) which it claims are up less than cable competitor’s price hikes, and are pushed by programming costs that have gone up eight percent. The last time we noted an increase in prices, DirecTV had just added a slew of HD channels. This time, it comes after a year that’s seen a number of DVR upgrades, more new channels, a lower price for Sunday Ticket, the launch DirecTV Everywhere features and, of course, a battle over programming costs with Viacom. We predicted that last bit would be reflected sooner or later in a pricing adjustment and it appears the time has come. So tell us DirecTV customers, are the new features, and keeping all those channels worth an increase to you, or are you thinking of moving on?

Dashwire closes up shop, all your data to get flushed on February 15th
Ok, so chances are you probably haven’t thought about Dashwire much in the last couple of years. Last time we covered the service was back in the halycon days of Windows Mobile 6.0, early on in the modern smartphone revolution. In case you need a bit of a refresher, Dashwire was a cloud service that delivered many of the ammenities we now take for granted in mobile device — visual voicemail, threaded SMS, automatic sycing of photos, and status updates. Earlier this year, HTC snatched up the company which last made news with the free, and appropriately-named, Awesome Drop for Android (which seems to be dying a quiet death in the market). Well, the actual Dashwire service has been languishing for sometime now, but the company has decided to finally discontinue it completely and, on February 15th, will be shutting down its servers and deleting all user content. So, if you’ve got anything still sitting up in its aging cloud, now is the time to reclaim it.

10 Most Popular Projects Presented in February 2011
Last month, many designs shown here on Freshome were greatly appreciated, so the decision to present the 10 Most Popular Projects Presented in February 2011 was easy to come by. Ranging from comfortable residences to astounding villas, the projects surprise artistic interpretations of spaces, shapes and colours. Don’t forget that by clicking on the pictures, you can see more photos and details about each project.
#1. The Meera House, designed by Guz Architects, is located on the island of Sentosa, in Singapore. It is a daring and original project that features green spaces for every floor of the building. Because of the neighbouring buildings being so close, walls were constructed on each side, protecting the privacy. Each storey has visual or actual access to greenery and the layered effect makes each floor feel like it was a single storey dwelling sitting in a garden.
#2. With the help of thousands of screws, Andrew Myres, a 31-year-old artist from Orange County, California, manages to create mind-blowing portraits by drilling screws into wood and some of them have 1.2m (4ft). The idea struck Andrew while working in a church a few years back and he started working on the first portrait. He was doing bronze reliefs depicting the life of Saint Catherine and thought about how it would be like to create them entirely out of screws.
#3. The PONS + HUOT Offices by French architecture practice Pottgiesser was designed to shelter the headquarters of two companies: Pons and Huot. It is compartmented into two horizontal planes, with a solid oak platform that serves both as ceiling and as desk surface. The four lateral sides feature spaces for archives, cloakrooms and the kitchen.
#4. Designed by Cape Town’s most beloved architect, Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA), the rental building was named First Crescent Villa. A large outdoor skylight connects the building to the landscape and the huge windows allow the natural view to contrast with the impressive, contemporary interior.
#5. Located atop the coveted “Bird Streets” area in Los Angeles, California, the 4,000 square foot property is for sale at 9010 Hopen Place. It features four bedrooms and five bathrooms, a breathtaking infinity pool within an interior courtyard that offers unequalled panoramas of the city. Worth almost 10 million dollars, the residence has custom made super slim framed slider doors that open the living space to the interior courtyard.
#6. The residence in Cabrera, Dominican Republic, named Casa Kimball was designed by the architects from Rangr Studio. The building features astounding panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean from all points of the building and garden. Having over 20,000 square feet, the villa features eight full suites are available for rent.
#7. The luxurious 5- star Pimalai “refuge” blends with the natural environment creating unforgettable experiences for the tourists who decide to spend their holidays here. The impressive resort and spa is located in the beautiful Thailand. Located away from crowded beaches, within the rainforest, it meets the silver ocean strand and occupies 100 acres of tropical vegetation with direct access to a 900 meters stretch of pristine sandy beach and offers 121 accommodation units.
#8. The WhitePod Alpine Ski Resort is located 1700 meters above sea level in the village of Les Cerniers and consists of 15 original accommodation units in the shape of igloos. The cabins feature a fireplace, a king-sized bed, a wide window for unobstructed views of the valley and plenty of comfort. The ski tracks are at walking distance and the tourists can always take a short walk to a common entertaining building, where they can purchase food and drinks.
#9. Designed by SouZou Creations in Japan, the cute handmade food rings can be bought online from Etsy. The rings are highly original, featuring various food courses and drinks, from pretzels to spaghetti and from the worldwide consumed Coke to milkshakes. Little details like the intricate plate designs or the decorations in the shape of small umbrellas and fruit are gorgeous and seem very real.
#10. Located on the Island of Maui, Hawaii, between Kaanapali and Kapalua, the residence was designed by Californian architecture studio Arri LeCron. It covers over 9,200 square feet, compartmented into 7 bedrooms each with a luxurious bath, wet bar and attached oceanfront ohana, 3 half bathrooms, a large open living space with a fully equipped kitchen with separate enclosed butler’s kitchen, sport bar with pool and games tables on a floating mezzanine, a spa and waterfalls and a garage that can fit three cars.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play finally official, gets full launch event on February 13th
Sony Ericsson has finally stopped teasing, winking, and nodding knowingly and has just come clean — the Xperia Play is most definitely real and it’ll be one of the first devices announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We’re treated to a date and time, February 13th at 6PM GMT, a pair of full frontal shots of the Gingerbread-running, gamepad-wearing smartphone, and the full version of that creepy ad we saw for it a couple of days back. Scope it out after the break.

In Brief: February Miscellany

Today you are getting another miscellany because of a major snowstorm in Austin, TX — three quarters of an inch! — that will put both of my daughters at home all day so every minute counts and must be optimized, meaning I can’t spend the necessary time on a proper review this morning. Still, some juicy things to keep you entertained this Friday.
1. Most Desired Brands in the U.S.
Buyology, “the world’s leading strategic neuromarketing company,” has released its first annual Most Desired U.S. Brands Report after six years of spending $8 million testing 240 global brands with more than 5,000 consumers. The results are pretty baffling, unless you are like me (not) and the thing you desire most every single day is Crest. That’s right, Crest is the number one, most desired brand for men. Crest! If there was a brand for watching paint dry that would be more desirable than Crest. Forbes has a breakdown of the top ten brands for men and women.
2. Cam the Ram
Since graduating from Colorado State University in 2001 designer Kyle Stopperan has wanted to give back through his talents and in 2003 he figured out a way how to: proposing a redesign of the athletic department’s mascot, Cam the Ram. It took Kyle seven years to get his mission realized. It’s all summed up in one ramerrific graphic.
3. iheartlogos Season One Book
To cap off the first “season” iheartlogos has released their first self-published book with the top winners. Even though you can see the very top vote getters here and all the submitted logos when you join, there is always something nice about a printed compendium. A little crit/suggestion for season two’s book: Try to provide a little more “voice” to the work through your own editorial point of view as well as more winner commentary, otherwise it just all feels a little detached.

Google announces Android event for February 2nd
Had enough Honeycomb this week? Perhaps — but next week is a whole new week, and Google’s got your back. Mountain View has selected Wednesday, February 2nd for an event that’ll include “an in-depth look at Honeycomb, Android ecosystem news and hands-on demos,” so by all accounts this seems to be more than a mere wrap-up of everything they’ve announced in the past few weeks. New tablets? Honeycomb for smartphones? Android 2.4? Something else entirely? We’ll be there to find out, of course.
