Leave a commentEarly apps for touch-based Ubuntu reveal a mostly clean aesthetic
The clatter of ergonomic keyboards is already bearing fruit, just two months after the Ubuntu developer community was let loose on the SDK for the newly touch-enabled OS. Canonical’s Michael Hall has posted an update on his personal blog detailing progress with some core apps, such as Calendar and Weather, as as well the broader effort to give mobile Ubuntu a sense of personality. There are some nice-looking puzzle games, news readers and even an app built around the disembodied head of a strapping lad called Jono, who in many ways symbolizes the minimal-but-cheerful look of the emerging ecosystem. A bit of debugging here, a swoosh of the razor there, and it could be perfect.

Leave a commentXi3 starts Piston pre-orders: buy an early Steambox for under $1,000
While Xi3′s Piston may only be a Steambox through its software optimization, that still leaves us with a milestone on our hands now that the system is available for pre-orders: it’s the first Valve-blessed PC on sale. If you’re willing to set aside just under $1,000 ($900 during SXSW), you can claim a Big Picture-friendly mini PC with an embedded, 3.2GHz version of AMD’s quad-core A10 in addition to 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. There’s no mention of the conventional spinning storage referenced at CES. Expansion is limited to larger-capacity SSDs, although that’s not surprising when the entire computer is smaller than a GeForce GTX Titan. The real jolt will be the launch timing. Xi3 won’t have Pistons shipping until around the holidays, which could leave some of us hunting for less-than-official (if considerably larger) substitutes for the full Steam experience.

Library of Congress unveils plan to preserve early US sound recordings
Historic audio recordings aren’t exactly easy to access and play back since they’re often in obscure or aging formats and sit within giant repositories and private collections, but the Library of Congress is gearing up to help change that for researchers and the average joe. The outfit’s freshly announced National Recording Preservation Plan is headlined by a recommendation to create a publicly accessible national directory of sound recordings that’ll act as an “authoritative discography” with details regarding their production and where copies are housed. You’ll still have to take a trip to a library to hear the recordings for the time being, but the Library of Congress is hoping to hammer out licensing agreements that would allow for online streaming. Developing new preservation standards and creating university-based degree programs for audio archiving are also among the 32 short- and long-term recommendations spelled out by the document. Google quietly removed search warning message in China in early December 2012
Google’s search engine has a turbulent history in China, from search results being censored to temporary shutdowns. The company’s most recent effort to serve mainland China with unfiltered search results met with an untimely end back in early December, Google confirms — a warning previously told mainlanders when the search term they were using had met with issues (read: Chinese government intrusion causing lengthy connection times) for other users. GreatFire discovered that said message no longer popped up when searching for various censored terms on Google Search in China, and while Google’s confirming that fact, it’s unclear what the exact reasoning is. Given the rocky history between Google and China, it seems likely that China responded in turn to Google’s efforts with its own — or as The Guardian puts it, “Google concedes defeat in China censorship battle.” Whether that’s the case or not remains to be seen, but Chinese Google searchers should beware that your experience may result in some unfortunate connection issues from time to time (as much as 90 seconds), per China’s censorship policies.

Steps Bench Connects Parent And Child At Early Ages
Connecting parent and child in a new and interesting way, the Steps Bench was created to display a simple design with a versatile use. Providing a long-term bond between the two users, the bench transforms from one age to another to accommodate the needs of the child: “Placing the stool under the hole of seat, it is a table for the child. When the child grows a little older, they can sit next to each other at the same level by fitting the stool back into the hole.” Designed by Kohdai Iwamoto and part of the Design Soil project, this beech wood bench rests its curved top on four legs. Urethane foam covered in colorful fabric was used to create the comfy stool and the hole on one side holds this muffin-resembling element when your kid is old enough to comfortably sit next to you. Its name offers a perspective on the steps each child has to take in order to grow up happy alongside family. RIM’s first BlackBerry 10 device may come as early as October
It’s no secret that there’s currently a sense of urgency in Waterloo, but if a recent report from N4BB is accurate, it seems that both consumers and enterprise are bound to benefit. According to the site’s confidential source, Research in Motion is preparing to reveal its first BlackBerry 10 device in mid-August and will have the product in the hands of consumers by October. We’d previously known that RIM intends to have these units in the hands of developers next month, which gives a bit of credence to this most recent revelation. As for what consumers may expect, the first device is said to offer just a touchscreen, whereas we’ll need to wait until Q1 of next year to see a handset with a physical QWERTY keyboard. As you’ll recall, the company’s previous leader, Mike Lazaridis, previously stated that consumers wouldn’t see a BlackBerry 10 device until the end of the year, but this was due entirely to a shortage of the chipset that RIM deemed crucial to its manufacture. Perhaps Mr. Heins was able to light a bit of a fire under the company’s partners, no?
