Target, Walmart list price drop for B&N’s Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight to $119

Barnes & Noble slashes Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight to $119, assures us it's not Kindle-related

Check those calendars. It’s September 29th, which means, for those who follow the world of e-readers, that we’re two days from Kindle Paperwhite day. According to Target and Walmart, it also means that Barnes & Noble’s own illuminated e-reader, the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, is getting a $20 price cut, down to $119. That price puts the reader on par with the entry-level Paperwhite (no 3G, with ads). Let the battle of the front lit e-readers commence!

Motorola Mobility to drop 800 jobs

Motorola Mobility has issued a regulatory filing outlining the loss of 800 jobs. The cut will cost the handset manufacturer $31 million — that number includes $27 million in severance and $4 million to close locations. The reason for the cuts? Bloomberg suggests that it’s part of an attempt to lower costs, as the company readies itself to join the Google family — a decision Motorola’s board will vote on in the middle of next month. This news follows last week’s earnings report, in which the mobile company reported a $32 million net loss — not the greatest financial report, sure, but a marked improvement over the prior quarter’s $56 million loss.

Ecko Zip earbuds pump tunes through a functioning zipper, let you drop your fly in public

We already knew that New Jersey was a hotbed for personal audio innovation, so it certainly came as no surprise when the Garden State’s ECKOUNLTD (Ecko Unlimited, with a hint of Jersey Shore) hit us up with a slew of new stylz. We’re most curious about the new Zip ‘buds, which replace the traditional cord with a functioning zipper, presumably to keep that ever-so-prevalent tangling issue from crampin’ your style. These in-ear beauts will set you back just 30 beans — or about a half-dozen servings of Ron Ron Juice. Other offerings include the $13 Zone earbuds, $15 Chaos II (that Chaos I was off the hook), the $20 Stomp, $25 Lace (which include a shoelace-inspired cord), and the $40 Chain, which, as you probably guessed, features a beaded dog-tag chain cord. At those prices we wouldn’t expect stellar acoustics, but if you’re rockin’ out to any of these budz, you’re probably most concerned with lookin’ good. And nothing says six-pack like zippers and chains.

Apple will drop restocking fees on January 11th

9to5 Mac reports that Apple will drop its 10 percent restocking fees on January 11th. We’ve confirmed with our own sources that this is true. January 11th happens to be the day that Verizon will hold a mysterious event in New York City, presumably for the Verizon iPhone. While this certainly isn’t incontrovertible evidence that the Verizon event is actually more of an Apple event, this definitely adds some tinder to the flaming rumor mill. Then again, Apple could merely be following Best Buy’s lead, with the 1.11.11 date pure coincidence. Either way, we’re fans of open return policies for expensive products, so if you ask us, it’s more of a good thing.
