Seeing is believing, Disney crafts 3D printed optics (video)
A group of engineers from Disney Research have crafted a new method to create interactive objects using 3D printers. Referred to as “printed optics,” the lure of this technology is the ability to transform inert 3D models into interactive subjects by embedding 3D printed light piping into an object with minimal electronic components. Illuminated by LEDs and mobile projectors, this new breakthrough in optics has the potential to replace LCD and LED screens to display information on smaller interactive devices. If you find yourself scratching your head trying to visualize such a mojo in action, then check out the video after the break. It will enlighten you.

Google Fiber announces qualified areas tomorrow, snags ABC channels including ESPN, Disney
The official list of the first “fiberhoods” Google’s Gigabit internet + TV service will be available in doesn’t come out until tomorrow, but it’s already looking like a more attractive option to some viewers thanks to a few newly announced channel additions. The team’s blog post lists several ABC channels that will be available on the HDTV service, not the least of which is sports giant ESPN, along with ESPN2, Classic, Goal Line, Buzzer Beater, Deportes, ESPNews, Longhorn Network and ESPNU. We’ve confirmed ESPN3 is also included, while WatchESPN and WatchDisney mobile access is planned for the “near future.” Overall it appears that ABC has squeezed its entire bundle including the Disney channels into the lineup (check the list after the break), which may not curry favor with those hoping for some revolutionary a la carte options, but should make switching to the $120 bundle easier for sports fans and families. Check the launch announcement for more details on the Nexus 7-controlled service that seamlessly blends standard TV and streaming options if you’re pondering a move to Kansas City.

Disney launches two new Android smartphones, mouse ears not included
Mickey’s ditching the steamboat and giving up Fantasia in pursuit of all things mobile as Disney launches the DM011SH and DM010SH — joining the company’s other Android offering. The 4-inch 3D capable DM010SH handset will be Walt’s top-of-the-line variant with a 960 x 540 qHD touchscreen, 8MP camera and a 1GHz processor. Next in line is the DM011SH waterproof slider with a 3.4-inch touchscreen sporting 854 X 480 resolution and an identical processor and camera to its higher-end cousin. Both Android 2.3 phones come decorated with the signature insignia in tweentastic candy colors like pink and white, with a black version of the DM010SH available for more subdued Mouse House fans. Aside from the phones, Disney also outed the internet-enabled DM001Photo, a 9.4 x 5.6-inch digital picture frame for viewing pictures, videos and emails over 3G for ¥890 (or $11) a month. Although prices have yet to be finalized, the DM010SH is slated to hit the Japanese market in October, while the other two should appear on store shelves by December. Check out the full Japanese PR and product pages by hitting the source links after the break.

Disney World’s Haunted Mansion gets interactive upgrade, digital spooks (video)
It may not be as scary as Walt Disney World’s Hall of Presidents, but the Florida theme park’s Haunted Mansion just got a ghostly upgrade. The ride’s grand finale, which previously positioned hitchhiking ghosts — by way of half-silvered mirrors — alongside unsuspecting visitors, is now reportedly using a series of digital mirrors and sensors to make things more interactive. As opposed to just popping up next to passengers, Disney’s Ezra, Gus, and Phineas are now equipped to rip your head off, blow it up balloon-style, and send it flying. Sure it sounds scary, but this is Disney, the same company that didn’t see the nightmare-inducing capabilities of a robotic Obama. For a peek at the new creepers, peep the video after break.

Disney / Method Soap

Disney and Method partner up by creating a Mickey and Minnie hand soap! It combinines the shape of the iconic couple’s ears with the recognizable type treatment of Method’s.
“mickey and minnie are as iconic as they come. which is one of the many reasons we developed a naturally derived, biodegradable foaming hand wash in the likeness of Disney’s most delightful power couple. the gentle formula leaves hands feeling soft + clean. and in bright, fresh fragrances like lemonade and strawberry fizz, you don’t have to be a kid to recognize the scent of the happiness. let the foam party begin.”

Disney Junior, more Flexible than Disney Senior

This coming February Disney is introducing a new channel and programming block, called Disney Junior, that will replace SOAPnet and Playhouse Disney, respectively. Playhouse Disney currently airs through the main Disney Channel and is aimed at the preschool range of kids, typically 2 – 5. Disney Junior will keep airing through the Disney Channel and expand its audience to include 7-year-olds and new content. Playhouse Disney also operates as a full channel in more than twenty markets overseas. SOAPnet is a channel about soap operas so… um, yeah, it makes perfect sense for people that watch soap operas to be rewarded with a new kids channel. (I’m guessing they don’t give away cable channels like toothpicks at a restaurant so Disney is probably using its cable real estate to reshuffle). Anyway, Disney Junior will carry favorites like Handy Manny and Special Agent Oso. Announced back in May of 2010, Disney Junior presented its new identity in late October of 2010.

As you can see, the new logo can take on all kinds of personalities from characters of Disney Junior’s programming and it does it without being obvious or pandering to its audience. Kids (and parents) will recognize the spots of the dalmatians, the stylings of Handy Manny, and even subtler cues like Donald Duck’s bow tie. It doesn’t have to put the literal images right then and there. Even without the different costumes the logo is an effective, chunky, tightly letterspaced logo. If I have one complaint it would be whatever is happening between Disney’s “D” and Junior’s “J”, where the counterspace of the “D” blocks the “J.” I assume it created some visual clutter, but it just looks odd to this logo blogger. Nonetheless, a very nice and appropriate identity. A video of the animated logos above can be seen here.
Thanks to Josh Myers for the tip.
