Amazon wins patent for airbag system designed to protect portable devices
As avid patent-watchers may recall, an application for a rather unusual contraption from Amazon surfaced last summer — one that detailed an airbag system designed to protect portable devices from falls, with none other than Jeff Bezos himself listed as one of the two inventors. Now, it’s no longer just an application, as the USPTO officially has granted the patent to Amazon today. Of course, that still means it’s likely a long ways from finding its way into an actual Amazon product (if it ever does), but don’t be too surprised if your future Kindle Fire 4K XL 5G one day saves itself from an imminent demise.

Elegant Home Designed To Shelter Impressive Classic Vehicles: Lucerne Residence

When planning the design and layout of a home, the owners usually begin by considering aspects such as practicability or the comfort of its inhabitants. The brief for the Lucerne Residence however stated that this building had to be-above all- a cool place to accommodate classic vehicles. Daniel Marshall Architects responded to this challenge by developing a state-of-the-art contemporary structure, with a very elegant garage.

According to the architects, the approach was to “wrap the garaging around a central ‘pergatoria’ – a term coined by the Italian architect Terragni for an entry courtyard. The garage doors were detailed to disappear into the adjoining cedar exterior. This area also incorporates the entry, conceived as a three level atrium that entices the visitor up to the living level and to the eventual revelation of the views of the Auckland landscape beyond“. Different from every stand point, we believe this modern home set in a privileged area in New Zealand is a good example of opulent, yet stylish home design-how do you find it?

Ingeniously Designed Two Floor Apartment With Decadent Accents

Located in a charming apartment building in Gothenburg’s Kungsladugård area, this 51 square meter two floor apartment apartment spreads over two levels. Wooden floors are highlighted by natural sunshine bouncing off white walls. Two windows facing different directions ensure a cheery atmosphere on sunny days. The lower level is reserved for social spaces like the open floor living room integrating the kitchen. A stylish dark blue hallway mirroring the dark sculptural staircase in the living room greets guests in a light-filled, functional space duo.

On the same floor, a bathroom displays a wide strip of red til, marking a challenge to personalize the space by adding colorful accents. The upstairs floor plan is composed of a bedroom on one side of the staircase and a working space on the other side. I imagine living here someone who loves natural light and loves this discreet lack of brightness in the attic-turned-bedroom space. Taking advantage of the building’s a lush garden and nearby cafes or alluring little shops, the lucky dweller will feel the urban influence while enjoying pleasant surroundings. Seen at Stadshem, the apartment shares the same 1937 building with other 22 condominiums. I can’t help but wonder how neighboring apartments look like.

Especially Designed For Single Women : Quant 1 Apartment

Close to Stuttgart’s center, a converted 1950s laboratory building with a facade designed by Wilford Schupp hides a luxurious suite of spaces named the Quant 1 Apartment. Designed by Ippolito Fleitz Group – with offices in Stuttgart – this glamorous apartment only has one bedroom and one and a half bathrooms, and was based on a concept that would target single women. The colors, textures and style, as well as furniture items and design lines were carefully chosen to not only create a sense of stylish glamor, but also to give the compact spaces a sense of spaciousness “achieved through a strong emphasis on transparency and openness in the design of the individual elements.” A curved staircase in the middle of the apartment creates a bold statement of space, while displaying a beautiful set of lamps.

The upper floor is occupied by the bedroom, bathroom and dressing room, all shaping a modern fairytale-like space: “ Opposite the bed, the bedroom opens down onto the dining area via four synchronized windows, with a curtain for when discretion is required. On the other side of the room, an oval window enclosed within a Chesterfield-upholstered seating niche, which creates a sensuous boudoir effect, provides a visual link to the bathroom. The materiality of the bedroom is characterized by soft fabrics: A thick-pile, velour carpet, white, upholstered leather, a diaphanous yet opulent expanse of curtain, and flower motif wallpaper on the wall behind the bed are offset and complemented by off-white bedroom furniture. The adjoining bathroom is enclosed by porcelain stoneware executed in horizontal stripes, generating a very tactile feel. A mirrored bathroom cupboard of whitewashed oak stretches along the length of the room. With its mirrored doors and multiple illuminated compartments, it exudes a sense of abundance and offers generous storage.” How many of you ladies would love to call this apartment your home?

London Residence Designed For An Elderly Couple

We received photos of the House on Sandall Road – a single family residence located in Ealing, London, on a back land site. Completed in 2010 by Evolve Architecture, this project was designed for the clients’ elderly parents at the end of their garden. Situated in a conservation area near a nature reserve, the white volume seen from the street hides a collection of rooms and details that will surely catch your attention. Here is how the architects describe the residential project: “The garden elevations are clad in timber fitting in with the surroundings. From the hill beyond the view is of the sedum roof covering the house. The south elevation has a deep overhang to shade the large glazed doors and windows in summer and provide a ‘porch’ for accessibility to the garden.

By exploiting the natural slope of the site the lower floor is well lit large windows. The direct garden access and separation from the ground floor provides an independent space for a future carer. It is designed specifically for the current occupiers and their needs but could well adapt to family living . For now the occupiers enjoy the view of their grandchildren from their kitchen table. The house is of timber framed construction built with sustainability in mind and suited to a modest budget. Materials used include Sheepswool insulation, Western Red Cedar treated with linseed oil, Sedum Green roof, Marmoleum and solid Maple timber flooring, Gabion boxes filled with recycled bricks, re-used railway sleepers, recycled plastic paving grid, water butts.”

Do you sometimes sit at night in a comfortable chair that helps you achieve that pure happiness just looking at the moon? Available in red, orange, bronze, black and white, the Moon Chair designed by Mike To is one of those objects that inspire a special atmosphere in the room it beautifies. It weights 18 kg and it can adorn a modern space just as well as an interesting piece of modern art would. Inspired by the moon, as its name openly admits, the Moon Chair is no higher than 62 cm. Color and Inspiration in a Small Australian Apartment Designed by Cassie Potts

We received a colorful and inspiring small apartment from designer Cassie Potts, founder of M.dart Interiors. Here is her personal description of the crib:”I moved into my small one bedroom apartment with my Pugalier ‘Duck’ only a few months ago, after returning from 4 years in London. It required a lot of imagination to enable the small space to accommodate my extensive collection of eclectic trinkets and artwork from around the world. My style is a fusion of warehouse/industrial-chic and Mexican-kitsch all encapsulated in a sun-bathed Australian beach-side apartment. Even though there is barely an inch of wall or floor not adorned with a brash curios from Mexico or some graffiti-art brought off the street in East London; white walls and shelving help to show-case the bold techni-colour décor whilst not creating a sense of claustrophobia or overwhelming aesthetic-chaos. Despite the small space, the careful arrangement of design objects has created different scenes that separate and define living areas in the apartment”. We appreciate the originality and overall happy vibes this well planed apartment inspires and are looking forward to see if your comments are as positive.
