Google quietly removed search warning message in China in early December 2012

Google’s search engine has a turbulent history in China, from search results being censored to temporary shutdowns. The company’s most recent effort to serve mainland China with unfiltered search results met with an untimely end back in early December, Google confirms — a warning previously told mainlanders when the search term they were using had met with issues (read: Chinese government intrusion causing lengthy connection times) for other users. GreatFire discovered that said message no longer popped up when searching for various censored terms on Google Search in China, and while Google’s confirming that fact, it’s unclear what the exact reasoning is. Given the rocky history between Google and China, it seems likely that China responded in turn to Google’s efforts with its own — or as The Guardian puts it, “Google concedes defeat in China censorship battle.” Whether that’s the case or not remains to be seen, but Chinese Google searchers should beware that your experience may result in some unfortunate connection issues from time to time (as much as 90 seconds), per China’s censorship policies.

Samsung Galaxy Camera reaches Canada on December 7th with carrier-independent 3G

Samsung Galaxy Camera review

Canadians won’t have to race to the border or gamble on an import if they’re jonesing for a Samsung Galaxy Camera to call their own. As of December 7th, they’ll find the Jelly Bean-touting shooter sitting either in a local Black’s Photography store or the official Samsung store in Burnaby, BC. The Canuck model keeps the HSPA+ data we’ve seen in the AT&T version, but the similarity in networks up north works to a budding photographer’s advantage: a data micro-SIM from any of the larger carriers will be enough for some 3G photo sharing. Samsung is oddly silent on just how many toonies it will take to buy the Galaxy Camera, although a near-perfect parity in currency suggests the Canadian price won’t be too far from the $500 US sticker.

Android 4.2 bug omits December from the People app, makes end-of-year birthdays even less bearable

Android 4.2 bug omits December from the People app

The launch of Android 4.2 brought a welcome smattering of extra features to the mobile world, but a recently discovered bug omits something slightly important: namely, the month of December. Dive into the People app on any device using the new OS, and the last 31 days of the year will be unavailable for contacts’ anniversaries and similar special occasions. Google is aware of the flaw, although it hasn’t yet said when it will have a fix in place. We’ve reached out to get a more definitive timetable for a solution beyond just what’s implied by the Gregorian calendar. In the meantime, don’t lean too heavily on that smartphone to remember an imminent birthday; people born in December are stiffed out of enough presents as it is.

[Thanks, Waverunnr]

T-Mobile and Nokia announce December 14th event, Windows Phone coming?

Big news from Bellevue, as T-Mobile and Nokia have just announced that a special event will be held the evening of December 14th. The companies were too smart for us this time, choosing not to reveal any code names via the image file; however, the tiled design of the invite seems to be a rather strong indication that Windows Phone is in the mix here. Could it be an existing Lumia device, or will it be something completely new? We have precisely one week to mull over the prospects.
