Daring Contemporary Addition to Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum
The grand rooms, majestic staircase and natural lighting of the initial building of the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum created in 1895 were retained in an “updated” modern version of the landmark. Benthem Crouwel Architects envisioned a bold addition for the famous contemporary art museum, situated next to the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw. The massive white volume provides more space for exhibitions and its interior design is said to blend in with the overall inner appearance of the main building.
The architects describe some of the features of the contemporary Stedelijk museum of art in Amsterdam: “From the entrance, visitors can familiarize themselves with the different routes that are possible through the building. The routing can be controlled by the programming, but is not mandatory in one direction. Thus it is possible to walk directly into the old building to follow the various circuits. The monumental staircase remained and continues to have an important function in the routing.” Amsterdam enthusiasts worldwide, how would you comment on this new architecture addition to the city’s landscape?

Contemporary Warm Shelter In The Cold Country of Norway

This modern home in Norway, called the Cabin GJ-9 was designed by Gudmundur Jonsson Architect and it emphasises the beauty of the surrounding rocky landscape. The inhabitants are one step closer to the nature, breathing fresh air and enjoying a stress-free environment. The project aims to rediscover the simple things in life such as a staggering view over the lake while drinking your morning coffee or a walk in the dusk, after a hectic week day. The Cabin is located in Bjergøy, a wonderful and relaxing place, where time does not exist and where a strong connection with the nature is all you need to find inner piece.

The house is rather a cozy shelter for your senses. It is warm and stylish, rich in details and decorations. Floor to ceiling windows allow a good light penetration and moreover allow the nature to slip inside. The core of the living room is a fireplace that creates a romantic atmosphere, for cold nights and snowy days. The house is entirely made of wood and stone (natural materials). “The pavilion concept is emphasized by the large roof that is as well giving shelter for the terrace during rainy days. The large roof has simultaneously the purpose of giving the impression that the Cabins space is bigger experienced from the inside. The terrace and the roof make a unity and extend the space with the glazed facade and the sliding doors.”

Exquisite Contemporary Vacation Home in The Exotic Country of Thailand

Welcome to the exotic Thailand! Breathtaking views, amazing people, interesting food and an entire range of activities that might seem exotic to the Western tourist, are worth taking the “risk” of exploring the boundaries of an awesome Thai lifestyle! Finding yourself on a land that exhales cultural diversity, the Baan Citta house, located in the North part of the busy city of Bankok is the work of XXS, a design studio that mainly focuses on balancing aesthetics with functionality and creating seamless flows between spaces, in order to understand the client’s vision of an “ideal home” and bring him closer to his comfort zone.

Really fascinating, the house has a beautiful view over the lake. You can enjoy the beautiful lake sunsets from the intimacy of the upper bedrooms. What’s really amazing is the fact that you can also enjoy the lake view from the swimming pool, giving you that particular feeling that you are about to immerse into infinity. The house is really spacious and inspiring, due to the client’s request, who wanted a zen home, a perfect escape with plenty of open spaces. Oklahoma Gets its Contemporary On

Established in 1989 in Oklahoma City, OK, as City Arts Center, the recently renamed Oklahoma Contemporary is a nonprofit organization that offers progressive and innovative art exhibits and “encourages artistic expression in all its forms through education and exhibitions.” Last week the organization announced its name change and introduced the new identity designed by Saffron.
The Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center brand is focused around the idea of ‘Creative Connections’, speaking to the role of Oklahoma Contemporary in connecting the local community with contemporary art, connecting art with the individual, and hosting the conventional alongside the unfamiliar. This spirit of connection is reflected in the new visual identity that allows for the work of exhibited artists to take center stage, while projecting Oklahoma Contemporary’s unique personality. The identity will be brought to life across Oklahoma Contemporary’s communications and their built environment, including a new stunning building due for completion in 2016.
— Press Release

The old logo wasn’t particularly good or bad, boring for sure, but nothing too offensive. It simply stated what it was: the arts center of the city. That’s probably what local folks said, “let’s go to City Arts Center”. Now locals, who are already in Oklahoma, have to say “Let’s go to Oklahoma Contemporary.” Awkward. Perhaps the hope is that they’ll say “Let’s go to the Contemporary” or “Have you see the show at the Contemporary?”. The name change feels perfectly well reasoned to elevate the name of the organization to a national level so that “Oklahoma” is recognized but the resulting name is really, really long. (How long before they rebrand as “OC”?). The logo is also pretty long. I don’t mind long logos, they are just a pain in the ass to work with but Saffron has found a nice way of implementing this evenly-spaced and ruled 20-character Gotham wordmark: In application the first line of the logo extends to part of the content, so the logo doesn’t get completely lost as it gets smaller in usage due to its length. The logo, its various options with images thrown in and cropped, and the oversize cropped typography all feel like clichés of contemporary art organizations, things we’ve already seen. It’s not entirely original but it definitely works, it looks good, and, branding-wise, helps place Oklahoma Contemporary in the same playing field as other sans-serifed contemporary art organizations.

Contemporary Malibu Home With Soothing Ocean Views

This holiday-inspiring Malibu residence was developed by the architecture team at Owen Dalton Masterbuilder77 and is located right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The two level home is cleverly suspended on a wooden platform above the beach and takes advantage of the staggering surrounding views. As you go up the entrance ladder, you can carefully shake off the sand, while getting ready for a relaxation therapy on the terrace.

The open plan living and dining space is located on the first floor and is connected to the exterior terrace. Black&White Contemporary Family House With Impressive Swimming Pool

From afar, this modern residence developed by the creative team at Andres Remy Arquitectos looks like a black and white monolith, pierced by glazing from place to place. The Grand Bell House project is located 50km away from Buenos Aires, Argentina, but its architecture has little to do with the tradition of the area. This building is as modern as it gets with its simple color palette, minimalist arrangements, floor to ceiling windows and focus on functionality.

The residence is structured on two levels: “The bedrooms, situated at the front, have an excellent orientation, while the master suite stays private and benefits from fabulous views. An outdoor green space greets the owners as they enter their contemporary Argentinian house. The pool, located along the lot, has the best orientation and passes under the playroom volume, becoming the protagonist of the house with its 19 meters in length“. The swimming pool can be seen from any part of the residence and can even be accessed unconventionally, by diving in from the second level.

Imposing Contemporary Residence With a T-Shaped Floor Plan in Zagreb

The highly modern the J20 House in Zagreb, Croatia was designed by studio DAR612 as a “juxtaposition of two elements – a primary longitudinal wing with white finish, and a perpendicular element covered in dark wood coating. A T-shaped floor plan enables maximum south and west orientation, as well as views from both levels”. The residence is surrounded by a courtyard providing just enough space for outdoor leisure activities.
The residence is structured as follows: “A two story-high entry divides the house into two segments connected with a wooden bridge: the east segment is a secondary space with a garage on the ground floor and children’s area on the first floor; the west segment contains the main living spaces and parents’ quarters on the upper floor“. The interiors exude openness and their minimalism is contrasted by warmth coming from the wooden additions. A large swimming pool is located above the living room and can be spotted from other parts of the house as well.

Mediterranean Décor Providing Texture to a Contemporary House in Lisbon

Travessa de Patrocinio is one of those bohemian places in Lisbon that require a sweet disposition while visiting. The unique collaboration between these three designers, Luís Rebelo de Andrade, Tiago Rebelo de Andrade and Manuel Cachão Tojal, gave birth to a project inspired by minimalism, with an interesting Mediterranean “coverage”. Imagine a thick “coat” of plants shadowing the entire façade of a house that spreads vertically. “Its walls are completely covered with vegetation, creating a vertical garden, filled with around 4500 plants from 25 different Iberian and Mediterranean varieties which occupies 100 square meters. So, short levels of water consumption are guaranteed as well as little gardening challenges.”

Reminding us of the Hobbit homes, this house is totally inspiring the idea that the inhabitable place is strongly connected to the environment. “The box housing deviates from the gable to create a vertical yard (glass box), with a straight ladder connecting all floors, an allusion to the famous stairs of Alfama, running between the all 4 floors walls and linking the various dimensions.” Each of the 4 floors embraces a (different) scent: lavander, rosemary or even lavander. The roof is a space dedicated to your senses. You can totally relax and let yourself inspired by the surroundings. There’s even an infinity swimming pool, to soak your body into deep relaxation. Beautiful and amazing, this is the perfect home for those who love nature in the middle of an urban “jungle”
