Verizon confirms 12-month Device Payment Plan for phones is launching April 21st
Look: we know many on Verizon aren’t happy that the carrier has revealed plans to lengthen its upgrade intervals right as smartphone update season is hitting full stride. However, there may be a consolation prize. As of April 21st, “some devices” in its smartphone range, not just the existing tablets, will qualify for a Device Payment Plan that spreads out the full costs over the course of a year, letting those who crave the latest mobile hardware (presumably, you) upgrade without either having to sign a contract or pay everything up front. Sounds like a very UnCarrier thing to do, doesn’t it? Not quite, unfortunately. The carrier tells us that these payments sit on top of existing service plans, not inside them — the base service rate won’t go down in year two. T-Mobile will remain the better bargain for anyone constantly replacing handsets, then, but those on Verizon will at least have a degree of freedom.

Nokia confirms Windows Phone 7.8 coming to the UK today, prices Lumia 620 at £149.99
Brits who ground their fingers to stumps hammering their Lumia’s update button will finally be able to rest, as Nokia UK has confirmed that Windows 7.8 is rolling out today. The company has also revealed O2′s pricing for the Lumia 620, the handset that’ll bring Windows Phone 8 to the cash-strapped masses. It’s available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back £149.99 or free on contracts priced over £18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around £20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.
You’ll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from ThreeUK and Virgin Media today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it’ll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the 820, we’ve got some bad news — Nokia has said it’s not likely to happen.

Bill Richardson’s office confirms North Korea humanitarian trip with Google’s Eric Schmidt
The office of Bill Richardson confirmed the former New Mexico governor’s planned trip to North Korea with Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt today via press release. The trip, planned for next week, is being billed as a humanitarian initiative. The duo’s team also includes Google employee Jared Cohen, the director of the software giant’s Google Ideas initiative, a think tank tasked with “tackling some of the toughest human challenges.” Ideas’ mission statement also highlights the program’s search for “challenges that affect multiple regions and demographics, so that the technological developments our insights fuel will scale to help as many people as possible.”

Not to be outdone by that red Galaxy S III over at AT&T, Sprint has confirmed that its inadvertent ad posting wasn’t just a fluke: it’s bringing out a white version of the EVO 4G LTE. Strictly speaking, it’s more of a aluminum-with-white-accents trim, but we’ll let that slide given that the back and kickstand are now decidedly less smudge-prone. The white EVO will cost as much as that Galaxy S III variant (and the black EVO) at $200 on a contract. Sprint will start selling the white hue on July 15th — and unlike AT&T, it should have phones on shelves rather than leave customers to online window shopping.

Sony exec confirms IPTV aspirations, says they’re on hold due to bandwidth caps
CES came and went without an update on the status of an alleged cable TV alternative the Wall Street Journal claimed Sony was building to push ahead its four screen strategy, but now Sony Network Entertainment VP Michael Aragon has given the rumor new life. Variety reports that during its Entertainment & Technology Summit Monday Aragon confirmed the company is considering offering TV services over the internet, but is waiting to see what happen with ISP bandwidth caps. Specifically referring to the Comcast 250GB limit that has recently come under fire from Netflix and others now that its Xfinity TV app on Xbox 360 skirts the cap entirely, Aragon noted cable companies have the pipe and the bandwidth and can restrict competing services. We’ve heard Netflix has been trying to negotiate its own path around such restrictions even as Redbox partners with Verizon on a video service, and rumors have periodically popped up linking Apple, Microsoft and any other tech giant you could name to similar plans. What does all this mean for the future? No one can say for sure yet, but unless some of the key players start to partner up instead of go to war we may need the FCC to step in before anything significant changes.

Nokia confirms Lumia 710, 800 to be knighted with mobile hotspot ‘soon’
If you’ve poured over the specs of Nokia’s Lumia 710 and 800 handsets during the last few months, you’ve likely noticed the duo’s lack of mobile hotspot functionally. Of course, the Finnish phone maker didn’t completely abandoned the feature in Windows Phone, as the ability to turn your device into a portable access point will ship with its flagship Lumia 900 and the recently announced 610 at launch. Nokia admitted that the feature would be coming to the 800 months ago, and now Elop & Company have announced that the 710 is also on the shortlist. A recent Q&A post on its Connects blog explained that software updates will be “coming soon” — by way of Zune update — to remedy the discrepancy between the old and new. No word on what Nokia’s definition of “soon” is, but you can find all the available details at the source link below.
