If you are a fan of industrial design, then you will certainly find the Beams Chair (envisioned by Berlin-based Eric and Johnny Design Studio) original and appealing. The lightweight wooden armchair was inspired by the H-beam structure of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and despite its fragile look, it is promised to offer great stability.

According to the designer, the chair is made of three different kinds of wood: bent plywood, multiplex and aircraft plywood: “The strength of the structure of the plywood and multiplex thin sheets is quite strong in one direction, while relatively weak in other direction. By combining the two wood sheets in a way so to offer directional perpendicular wooden structures and to build the H-Beam structure, there are two strong dimensions so the anti-twisting ability and compression strength as well as the stability of the chair are tremendously improved“. Curious on how the product was achieved?- check out the video at the end of the post!

Spectacular Light Installation: Rainbow Bridge Glowing in the Night in Taiwan

Making an urban space feel more welcoming is easy to achieve by putting a “colorful” idea into practice. Today we would like to introduce you to the Rainbow Bridge (found on Fubiz), an unusual elevated pedestrian walkway located in Magong, Penghu County, Taiwan. By simply adding a thin neon band to the massive construction, a wonderful visual effect is achieved. The colors of the rainbow are reflected on the water during night time, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Moreover, the bridge becomes visible from far away, adding a fairytale-like mood in the neighboring regions as well. Reaching out to playful personalities, this original lighting installation could be the answer to livening up dull places. However, in a crowded and over-lit city, it may seem a bit exaggerated. All in all, we like the idea and are looking forward to your comments regarding this intriguing project in Taiwan. Would you go for a late bike ride, knowing that this bridge would be waiting for you around the corner?

Re-Shaping A Bridge Into An Enormous Lego Passage

LEGO has inspired many artists to create using their iconic building blocks. From using 20,000 of them to build colorful staircases to photographic works displaying Lego additions, these tiny objects have been through many hands and inspired many minds. In Wuppertal, Germany, the underside of a bridge was painted by German street artist Megx in a playful Lego-inspired pattern showcasing red, yellow, green and blue building blocks, with a large darker green platform on top. Martin Meuwold – by his real name – transformed the old train overpass with the help of a construction team’s supervision. It took 4 weeks to complete the 250 square meter project, but the results brighten up the street below the bridge that used to be a train rail but is now a pedestrian and bicycle path. How many Lego-inspired designs have you seen during your trips to different places or Internet addresses? Share them with all of us, maybe one of us will be next in creating stunning Lego art.

Acer launches 11.6-inch Sandy Bridge TravelMate B113
4GB of RAM, half a TB of storage, Sandy Bridge and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 panel starting at €450 (about $563), sounds like a pretty sweet deal on a last-gen ultrabook right? Well, Acer’s TravelMate B1113 is actually brand new and, as you dig a little deeper into the specs, this one sound more like a rather hefty netbook. And we do mean hefty — this laptop apparently tips the scales at 1.88 Kg, which puts it a touch over the four pound mark. 4.1 pounds certainly isn’t shoulder busting, but it’s a solid half a pound more than you’d expect from a machine of this size. Then there’s the fact that the base model ships with a 1.4Ghz Celeron, and the top shelf €560 version (roughly $700) only sports a 1.5GHz Core i3. We haven’t been able to dig up the dimensions on this sucker, but the press pics don’t make it look particularly bulky. We can only assume, given its considerable weight and diminutive size, that the chassis is made of cast iron. On the plus side, it does have a matte screen… that’s gotta count for something, right?

Toughbook goes Ivy Bridge with 10-inch magnesium CF-19
One thing we haven’t seen too much of from the ongoing Ivy Bridge onslaught, is rugged notebooks. Sure, there was that Durabook from last week, but not much else — and we all know the big name in indestructible laptops, is Panasonic’s Toughbook line. Luckily, for those of you with jobs or hobbies that tend to involve dust storms and precipitous drops, the CF-19 is on the way with a 3.3GHz Core i5 under its 10.1-inch hood. The €2,950 (roughly, $3,727), convertible notebook has an optional touchscreen, 500GB hard drive, SSD options for the drop prone, as well as lone USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. If you’re a truly mobile warrior, there’s even an HSPA+ upgrade available for the wireless card. Basically its the Toughbook 19 we’ve all grown to know and love, but with some nice Intel upgrades on the inside. The updated rugged lappy should start shipping in Europe this July, but we’re still waiting on availability info for the US.

Ultimate Art Studio: Bridge Studio’s Saltbox House by Saunders Architecture

Having a remote workplace, somewhere in the middle of nature is something many people dream about. Dramatically located on a steep hillside, near an inland pond in Newfoundland, Canada, Bridge Studio’s Saltbox House was designed by Saunders Architecture and serves as a place of inspiration for accomplished artists to generate works of art. Here is more from the architects: “The first impression of the Bridge Studio is its abstract quality. From the side elevation, it appears as a windowless wood-clad parallelogram, hovering above the landscape, propped up by four piers and connected by a sixteen-foot bridge to the adjacent hillside. As one approaches the three hundred and twenty square foot studio, it becomes more transparent – with a generous glass entry and a large square window at the other end of the room“. The unusual art studio is composed of two levels, connected by stairs. A wood-burning stove and a large desk facing a generous window ensure a proper environment for unleashed creativity.

Maingear teases incoming desktop line, promises smaller towers and Ivy Bridge CPUs
Maingear’s Shift is a force to be feared, but it generally requires an entire wing of one’s home to be assembled and configured. Hyperbole aside, there’s no question that Maingear’s aiming to branch out somewhat after the aforesaid rig’s successful run, today teasing an “all new line of desktops.” We’re told to expect smaller designs with “clean” aesthetics, Vertical Exhaust cooling technology and third-generation Intel Core processors (with factory overclocked options, naturally). Prices are slated to start at $899, though there’s no real clue as to when we’ll see these things up for pre-order. Here’s hoping you didn’t plop down an order last week, huh?

HP sneaks out new dv4, dv6, dv7 and g4 Pavilion laptops, Ivy Bridge in tow (video)
We know Ivy Bridge is close to landing, but when damn it, when? Until we know for sure, what about these new notebooks from HP that sneaked out with barely a flicker of ballyhoo. There are four new Pavilions on their way, the dv4-5000, dv6-7000, dv7-6000 and g4-2000. All of them are getting the Ivy Bridge treatment bar the g4, which sticks with Sandy Bridge. The dv4 and dv6 both sport 2.3GHz i7-3610QM processors, GeForce GT630M graphics, Beats Audio and 14-inch or 15.6-inch (1366 x 768) displays respectively. The dv7 model steps things up with a 2.6GHZ i7-3720QM chip, GeForce GT 650M graphics and 17.3-inches of 1920 x 1080 screen. The g4, on the other hand, comes in a range of processing flavors, including the i3-2350M and i5-2450M Sandy Bridge variants and a 14-inch screen. The g-series will likely carry a £399 (about $630) price-tag, while the dv6 and dv7 are rumored start around £599 ($940) when they eventually land potentially in April — but don’t count your chickens. Full specs in the source, and promo videos after the break.
[Thanks Andrew]

Modern Residence Making The Most Of A Fantastic Location: The Bridge House in Cape Town

The Bridge House was designed by Van Der merwe Miszewski Architects and is located in City Bowl, an area of Cape Town, South Africa. Here is the official project description from the architects: “The site slopes, in places steeply, from Glen Avenue down towards the North. There are views of Table Mountain, Devils Peak, Lions Head and Signal Hill, the adjacent Pine forest, the City, the Harbour, the Atlantic Ocean, and beyond. At the uppermost end of the site, a bridge was placed across the Donga, allowing the Donga to remain below. A pool and stream, flowing to a pond, were inserted into the dry riverbed. The flow of water is dammed by the POOL, then runs freely in the stream and settles in the pond at the base of the site. Intensive planting will regenerate the garden. Found pathways and steps have been reinstated and added to. The Bridge is the “Main House” (site 1); containing entry, living spaces and main bedrooms. Adjacent to the bridge are the Garage and Guest quarters (site 2). At the base of the site, the Donga House (for visitors) spans over the pond (site 3)“. The impressive villa is up for rent here all year long, with prices ranging from $700 to $2,700 per night.
