Amazing Paper Art Complementing Fine Arts: Folded Book Sculptures by Luciana Frigerio

In case you thought books are just for reading, well, here’s something we want to show you, that might exceed your expectations! We figured out that books are a wonderful way to express art. Yes, of course, a book is a piece of art itself, but beyond our regular perception, there’s another one. And another. And so on! We are so excited to see that creativity has no limits when it comes to arts!  Luciana Frigerio, a Vermont-based artist created a unique collection of paper art, simply called Folded Book Sculptures. Basically that was exactly what she did. She folded page by page, creating emotional (timeless) messages by using books. She only used Times New Roman and Helvetica as fonts, because of their impact upon the viewers.

And what a better way to complement art than blending one’s exquisite taste in books with talent, devotion and hard work! The result is simply spectacular, as you can see! All the messages have a positive and powerful impact. The intriguing amount of creativity of this paper art collection determined a man to propose to his fiancé, by setting “the book messages” on the shelf in a bookstore. Her “universe of paper” can be actually bought from her online Etsy Store.

Kindle Touch updated with new UI, Whipersync for Voice and comic book navigation

Kindle Touch updated with new UI, Whipersync for voice and comic book navigation

Still have an old Kindle Touch sitting around? You have some new features to play with. Despite replacing it with a brighter son, Amazon is still updating its original touch sensitive e-reader — outfitting it with a new UI, enhanced parental controls and Whispersync for Voice, which shares bookmarks between audio and text versions of the same digital tome. Amazon’s improved the Kindle Touch shopping experience too, adding recommended content offers to users and remembering where they left off in a sample after they purchase the full text. Finally, the company injected the Kindle Touch with better comic and graphic novel navigation — allowing readers to view their funnybooks panel by panel, rather than by the full page alone. The update will be delivered wirelessly, though users that fancy their USB cable can install the new features the old fashioned way. Check out Amazon’s “what’s new with Kindle Touch” page for a run down of the update’s features.

World’s Colors in a Single Cubic Book: RGB Colorspace Atlas

colorcubes01 Worlds Colors in a Single Cubic Book: RGB Colorspace Atlas

In the design business, having an original color tool could do wonders. We ran across these interesting looking 8 x 8 x 8-inch (20.3 x 20.3 x 20.3 cm) hard-back cubes presenting the RGB color scheme in a page-by-page medium and thought of sharing the idea further. Designed by American artist Tauba Auerbach, the RGB Colorspace Atlas is said to contain all the colors out there, each of them easy to reach by simply flipping the pages. According to the designer, the project was achieved in collaboration with designer Daniel E. Kelm and the books were bound by Daniel E. Kelm assisted by Leah Hughes at the Wide Awake Garage. The airbrushed cloth cover and page edges of the cube contribute to an effortless handling, despite the considerable dimensions of the item. We are still a bit puzzled regarding the printing process (how does one capture RGB using CMYK ?), but hope you guys will help us with an explanation. Aside from that, do you find the idea practical?

Ultrasonic screwdriver sniffs out carbon fiber damage, planes book a check-up with The Doctor

Lighter planes means less fuel, means less money and, hopefully, lower ticket prices. Carbon fiber reinforcements are a major part of this plan; both Boeing’s latest bird and the double-decker Airbus make liberal use of the light and strong composite. However, they’re not without their own dangers; minute amounts of water can get into the carbon fibers, which then form ice at high altitude, damaging the fiber structures. This sort of miniature damage is — unlike aluminum versions — very difficult to spot. Embarrassingly, the engineers’ best bet to detect the ruined fibers until recently was to tap on the composite structures with a small hammer and listen for a hollow noise that would signpost water damage.

EADS, which depends on carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for its own Airbus fuselage, has now created an ultrasonic gun that can detect this damage. This sonic screwdriver is able to detect and visualize these invisible problems by bouncing sound off the plane’s surface and, well, it’s like that hammer test, but a heck of a lot more precise. The company hopes to ready the device for regular use by the end of next year.
