BlackBerry Z10 coming to AT&T March 22nd for $199.99, pre-orders open tomorrow
The BlackBerry Z10 has already been available in various parts of the world — and will soon be delivered to T-Mobile business customers in the US — but most consumers within the 50 states are still exercising a bit of patience. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear that American hopefuls will have to wait too much longer, as AT&T has announced that the flagship ‘Berry will be available for pre-order on March 12th for $199.99 on a two-year commitment, and should be ready for purchase in retail stores and online beginning March 22nd.

Thorsten Heins: BlackBerry won’t sell sub-$50 phones
Squint and you’ll find a few neat parallels between BlackBerry and Nokia. Both are fallen giants which are staking their livelihoods on a nascent OS, while the former is a Canadian run by a European, and vice-versa. The one point where the pair’s philosophies differ, however, is on the low-end market. While Nokia strove to embrace low-end phones like the Asha and the 105. Thorsten Heins has said he has no interest in producing budget phones for the developing world. At a question and answer session at the company’s Waterloo HQ, the CEO was quoted as saying “You will not see us getting into the 50-, 60-buck phone segment. This is not BlackBerry.” The move might alienate those who thought the Z10′s elevated price in places like India was a bit excessive — but at least Stephen Elop’s got something for every wallet size.

Enyo arrives to Windows 8, WP8 and Blackberry 10 with version 2.2
Enyo originally came along from HP to help developers create resolution-independent webOS apps, but since version 2.0, it’s become platform agnostic. While support for Windows 8 and WP8 through IE10 has been around for awhile, version 2.2 now brings packaged app creation for those OSes along with Blackberry 10 at the highest Tier 1 support level. The platform still requires native “container” software to package apps, with Enyo advising Visual Studio for Windows 8 and Cordova for WP8 and Blackberry 10. The company’s swatted a few bugs and added contextual popups too, so if you’re looking to get your JavaScript on, hit the source.

Super Bowl 2013 ads: Samsung, Best Buy, BlackBerry and… Zombies
So, catch the big game on the, er, internet? Or, if you took our advice and used more traditional hardware, you may have caught Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd trying to outdo each other to become Samsung’s “Next Big Thing” promoters (only to be trumped by LeBron James), or a BlackBerry Z10 user turning a tanker truck into rubber duckies. Other tech ads included Best Buy’s “Ask Amy” with Amy Poehler in full-on adorkable mode, Sony’s cinematic PlayStation God of War teaser and a pair of skeevy / cleverish Godaddy ads. We also got a sneak peak at the trailers for Iron Man 3 and Zombie apocalypse / Brad Pitt starrer World War Z. Finally, Star Trek: Into Darkness launched another teaser, which notably featured the debut of the Apple Store’s “AppStore.com” short link. All-in-all, pretty weak sauce compared to last year, in our opinion — but you can decide for yourself after the break.

BlackBerry Z10 priced at £480 unlocked by purported Carphone Warehouse database leak
With all the BlackBerry 10 leaks as of late, it seems inevitable that pricing info would get ousted in the lead up to January 30th. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, it appears that the the unlocked version of RIM’s Z10 will cost UKers a cool £480. The leak comes from what’s said to be a snapshot of Carphone Warehouse’s internal database, listing the white variant. The attached BLAZ10WHI model number also syncs up nicely with the previous slip from the retailer. At this rate, not much is going to be left to the imagination when RIM officially unveils its devices come Monday — who likes surprises anyway, right?

RIM’s latest milestone: BlackBerry 10 now being tested by over 50 carriers
Not much is going to make us excited about the BlackBerry world until RIM’s latest devices actually ship, but today’s announcement from Thorsten Heins is certainly good news in that regard. Today, he revealed that BlackBerry 10 units are now in the testing labs of more than 50 carriers, a necessary milestone that suggests the first BlackBerry 10 devices are still on track for a Q1 2013 debut. Naturally, it’s a shame that the company is going to miss the holiday season, but if you have a BlackBerry fan in your life, we suppose there’s always room for an IOU in their stocking. For those of us who aren’t fans of swipe gestures, the highlight of BlackBerry 10 is undoubtedly a unique keyboard that’s often a step ahead of its user. It’s a good thing for this last camp that RIM was just granted the final version of a related patent for logic-based text prediction. Instead of simply hunting for typos, the patented keyboard guesses the next word based either on the context of the words around it or on other criteria, like common expressions. About the only time the technique doesn’t predict words is for passwords — RIM would rather not be that clever. While there looks to be a few differences in the practical implementation of the patent as we’ve seen it in a pre-release BlackBerry 10, theory and reality are close enough that RIM won’t be worried about anyone else poaching its seemingly mind-reading technology anytime soon.

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has the unenviable task of, well, being the CEO of RIM. Still, in spite of some gloomy numbers, the exec thinks the company is on the right track. Heins told CBC Radio that, since taking over, the company has been implementing changes that are helping Research in Motion transition to BlackBerry 10, adding that “there’s nothing wrong with the company as it exists right now.” Heins told the Metro Morning radio show, “This company is not ignoring the world out there, nor is it in a death spiral,” adding, “Yes, it is very, very challenged at the moment – specifically in the U.S. market. The way I would describe it: we’re in the middle of a transition.” It’s a transition from which, Heins insists, RIM “will emerge successfully.” What’s more, Heins also has an op-ed in today’s Globe & Mail, where he mostly reiterates that stance and flatly says “don’t count BlackBerry out.” You can find it at the source link below.
