Backlit Bathroom Mirrors With Holographic Effect by Elia Felices

Elia Felices Interior Design has developed a new concept for the decoration of commercial areas, hotels, spas, bathrooms and homes with a strongly contemporary style. A combination of creativity and technology has been necessary to define a new category of decorative elements made of glass with holographic effects. Different designs are traced using a marker which takes advantage of the technical properties of LEDs to produce them with the utmost precision. Patterns are built up by sequences of micro-dotting with different formats to give the sensation of depth and relief associated with holograms.

The method produces a very interesting effect in which the light transmits different sensations to the observer depending on the point of view.
The base material is glass, so the image is as clear as possible. The dotting technique also creates variations according to the distance of the observer. The whole is best viewed from a distance where it resembles lacework. The three-dimensional quality gradually emerges as one approaches closer and closer, and the dotted pattern gives way to a sense of weighlessness. This is the concept of the holograph, a technique which produces the optical effect of a three-dimensional image. When the microdots are turned on, the peripheral ambient lighting they provide creates a distinctive environment.

The collection is available in two colour schemes, white or blue. The drawing is equally visible when the light is turned off. The light is stronger where the dots are overlayered, so these points can create constellations of lights. The first collection uses geometric figures. “These elements provide us with the technical and decorative means to satisfy the need for establishing identity within this space.” [Photos and information received via e-mail by Elia Felices Interior Design]

The 15 Point Checklist Before Starting a Bathroom Renovation
A bathroom renovation is an exciting task. But before jumping to choosing the latest tile or bathtub design, there are some less exciting things to consider so your project turns out just the way you dream it. Because renovating a bathroom can be overwhelming, time-consuming and costly, we prepared a simple 15-point checklist to make sure that your project stays on track and the renovation runs smoothly.

1. Budget
If you don’t know already you should work up an idea of how much you want to spend on your bathroom renovation. Setting a budget will help guide you as you make decisions about what to include in the remodel. Once you’ve figured out what you can spend and substracted the amount allocated to labor, you’ll have a clearer sense of what you can spend on tile, fixtures, and extras.
2. Time
Many people assume that if they are remodeling a small bathroom it will only take a few days, or anyway it will take much less time than a larger one. This is not necessarily the case. Depending on how many items you are changing in the bathroom your contractor will have to go through all the same steps as a larger bathroom. However, planning refers not only to defining the duration of the renovation works but also certain intermediate steps such as ordering and purchasing tiles, fixtures, custom-built vanity or cabinets to make sure they can be delivered when your contractor needs them. Planning time is also crucial for those with only one bathroom in their house as they will have to make arrangements where to take a shower and use the toilet while the bathroom is taken apart.
3. Works sequence
When it comes to bathroom renovation by completing the job in a specific sequence you can save yourself from a lot of clean up time and mistakes. Whether you are demolishing sheetrock or simply repainting, you always want to start at the top of the room. Remodel your ceiling first, walls second, and floors third so you can prevent damage to your new components.
4. Hidden problems
If you are doing a major upgrade to your bathroom consider doing a “full gut”. When done by a professional with expertise you end up with a zero problems bathroom that will function flawlessly and add tremendous value to your home for many years to come. Depending on the age of your home and how well it was built the biggest hidden problem you may encounter is water damage, so look for structural deficiencies in the floor framing, not properly vented plumbing, old corroded plumbing, non-waterproof tile shower/tub surrounds, etc.
5. Design style and functionality
When first starting out start by thinking about the look you want for your bathroom. There are many factors to consider like paint color, tile choices, vanities, showers, tubs, faucets, etc. It can get overwhelming very quickly so start with some research. You can start to piece together elements that you like into what will become the final design of the bathroom or you may choose a design item you want to feature in the bathroom and then work the rest of the bathroom design around it.
Design should work hand in hand with functionality so consider who will use the bathroom and how, consider an eventual resale of the house and also take a moment to think how the bathroom design will fit in with the rest of the house.
6. Measurements
There are 3 major limitations which really make size matter in bathroom renovation: the overall size of the bathroom (usually the smallest room in the house), the location of existing plumbing pipes and electrical wiring and the typical standard dimensions of bathroom fixtures. Therefore make sure you have the correct measurements and specifications when you go to the store. More frustrating than trying to shop without measurements is to end up purchasing stuff that doesn’t fit.

7. Contractor
Hiring a contract for a conceivably DIY job? Well, yes, that is a smart thing to do given the complexity of the job and difficult operations involved (electrical, tiling, plumbing, etc.). Therefore do not overlook the advantages of hiring a contractor and save yourself a load of misery and time.
8. Plumbing fixtures and features
No renovation is complete without remodeling or repairing fixtures and features, which could very well make a separate checklist themselves: shower, bathtub, toilet, bidet, sink, faucets and shower heads. You should also update or repair your mirrors and shower doors. You can also change the look of your bathroom very easily by changing out door handles, drawer pulls and the hardware for your shower doors. If you have the budget a new set of shower doors can completely change the look of your room.
9. Cabinets, storage and shelving
Planning cabinets, shelving and storing solutions is a tricky problem in most cases. In small, irregular shaped rooms like the bathroom, it is even more so. They need to be functional and accomodate all your stuff while keeping everything easily reachable, they must fit into the available space and make the most of it and on top of it all, they need to look stylish.
10. Walls and flooring
Virtually any material can be used to surface walls and floors in the bathroom as long as it’s waterproof, either naturally or by means of an impervious finish. Depending on your budget and style, ceramic, marble, and granite tiles make handsome and highly durable flooring and wall surfaces for baths. For flooring additional options may include cement (painted or stained), sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles which are inexpensive and look better than used to. Whatever your choice, always mind another key criteria for choosing your bathroom flooring: durability and slip-resistance.
11. Lighting
A bathroom can be rendered impractical or downright dangerous without adequate lighting so plan for design lighting that is functional and also creates atmosphere. Plan for maximizing natural light first, whereas for artificial light it is adviseable you should have least 4 watts of incandescent lighting per square foot.
12. Accessories
Although apparently insignificant in the bigger picture of the overall project, no remodel is complete without new accessories. And surprisingly enough, the small stuff like new towels, wash clothes, soap dishes, mirrors, towel racks, bath mats do add up to the final bill. If you are on a budget, new hand towels will be better than nothing.
13. Ventilation
Ventilation is crucial in a wet room like the bathroom. It is also a tricky task which needs good planning: choosing the right fan, the right position for its installation and dealing with the electrical wiring. Poor ventilation can leave your bathroom damp, mouldy and can even harm your health. A well-ventilated bathroom, however, isn’t just a healthy bathroom. Continual airflow can also prevent both the decay of any wooden trim or fixtures and the saturation of building insulation.
14. Going green
Even if you personally don’t care about going green one way or the other, the market is trending toward this so it’s something to consider. And there are many budget friendly options for adding a green touch to your bathroom: a low flow toilet that uses less water and saves you money in water bills; low-VOC or no-VOC paints; vanities made from sustainably harvested wood; recycled glass tile surface countertops, etc.
15. Final clean
The final clean should include a thorough cleaning of all cabinetry, inside and out, ductwork, walls, floor, windows, and light fixtures. Although often overlook in the planning phase, in the case of a major renovation you may want to consider contracting a cleaning service which means additional costs that impact your budget. If you feel up to doing it yourself, you may need to add a day or two to your initial timing.

Sleek Wooden Bathroom Collection by Kashani

Kashani is an Israeli company founded by brothers Efi and Shlomi Kashani. The duo combine state of the art engineering capabilities with design skills and craftsmanship to create the most gorgeous bathroom furniture. The products are made in small numbers with a limited production and are therefore easily customizable by the end user. Each design starts life as a sketch on a piece of paper before being transformed into a digital prototype using 3D modelling software. After thorough testing, the products are manufactured from wood using CNC milling machines and finished by hand.

Kashani currently produce three different ranges designed by Naty Moskovich and Yonatan Assouline: Logged up; Wood & White; and Alpha. The Wood & White series is created using CNC technology to form the wood which is then given a beautiful contrast through the use of white powder paint. The stand alone Sandra bath is complemented by the Alex sink with its functional Corian shelf, which is also a feature of the Rif Raf stools.

The smooth lines and elegant curves of the stand alone Alpha bath make for a sculptural addition to the Alpha bathroom collection. The Feijoa sink is the perfect addition to the range and when joined by the Royal fig stool the overall effect of the collection is simply breathtaking.

Fresh Timisoara Lounge Design Hiding Trombones In the Bathroom

Jazzissimo Lounge in Timisoara’s recently renovated Theresia Bastion captures the essence of relaxation in a carefully designed space. In this new urban environment that encompasses the original Vauban style bastion built three centuries ago, a contemporary, sophisticated lounge welcomes guests with an impressive interior design hosted in the shell of an inspiring historical building. Imagined by Stefan Lazar and Adrian Hanas of Romanian studio Ezzo Design, this intimate collection of spaces shape another successful project, after the Fresh, Work-Empowering X3 Offices Design. The two zones – the jazz area and the lounge club – merge colors and materials to offer two distinct entertaining spaces: “The authenticity of each area has been transposed through the designer’s feelings and covered in two different, unique shapes: the colors and the masculinity of the jazz area and the young environment given by the lounge club“.

Prepared to construct an elegant, fresh atmosphere around 100 people, Jazzissimo Lounge also has a few other hard to ignore features, photographed by Andi Popescu: “If we take into consideration the jazz area, well the entire atmosphere is drowned in cultured colors and shapes, through natural materials such as wood and leather: in other words Earth Green color and the subtle character of round shaped wood which invest nothing but refinement. In the jazz area there is hidden a VIP smoking lounge, all covered in whiskey steam and fine cigars, sophisticated talks, catchy ganders and meticulous smiles which all lead to British style. Above this small, intimate universe, we see the stage, a friendly welcoming area for the artists, which is also providing one of the most professionals systems L-Acoustics. In this land of jazz, the toilet is hiding the presence of trombones, handed over to the gentlemen, all drowned in warm lights and colors, wearing the same air of refinement. The women’s toilet is all natural, with delicate notes, discrete lines and a touch of vintage.” In an interview for Freshome, Stefan Lazar shared his plans for the future: “A thriving development both personally and professionally. I yearn at creating and maintaining a high standard of values so that our hopes and our clients’ outspoken and hidden necessities meet harmoniously“. After seeing this project, we think he’s on the right track, are we right?

Refined Modern Bathroom Interiors by Blanca Sanchez

We received a series of interesting bathroom projects designed by Blanca Sanchez of Halo Design Interiors. Here are some words from the designers about the interiors presented below: “These bathrooms were designed for two large residential mansions in one of the most exclusive residential housing areas of the United Kingdom. Both houses have classical neo-Georgian exteriors, with imposing front elevations. Both were built high on a hill, with extensive views over the surrounding estate, with views as far reaching as 25 miles away. However, this is where the similarity between the two houses ends. The younger clients of the first house wanted a clear contemporary edge to the interiors of the project, including the bathrooms.

We focussed on using timeless materials and highly skilled craftsmen to create bathrooms which were not only reminiscent of the most exclusive hotels in the world, but were also comfortable and welcoming for this young family. The main cloakroom was a feature room, with a wall completely clad in horizontal bevelled mirro, reflecting a bespoke linear design composite stone basin, overlooked by a cluster of sparkling Swarovski downlights.By contrast, the other project was driven more by the client’s desire to reflect its classical roots, but again with an up to date edge. The master bathrooms hark back to the art deco era, with the finest veneers and shadow-gap detailing, complimented by solid stone detailing. The rest of the bathrooms flowed from this, bringing in warm wood veneers such as walnut and oak and feature porcelain, with small pebbles encased in resin in one room and metallic mock crocodile skin effect in another”. We would like to know which one’s your favorite and why-let’s get the discussion started.

Multifunctional, Versatile Furniture for the Bathroom from Ex.t

Not so long ago we posted an interview with Meneghello Paolelli Associati, an Italian design agency that creates some pretty unique and creative sanitaryware. One of the bits of advice they gave us for bringing more creativity into the bathroom was to stop seeing the bathroom like a toilet and try to incorporate elements from other rooms in the house. This is the exact approach that Italian bathroom company Ex.t is taking and I have to say that I think this approach really works.
In order to make the bathroom a less traditional place, Ex.t offers multifunctional, versatile furniture solutions that can be used in all spaces of the house. All the objects are characterized by practical, simple and original aesthetics, and would look just as good in the living room or bedroom as they do in the bathroom.

Ex.t objects are designed by up-and-coming designers on the international design scene and are handcrafted in small laboratories in Tuscany, according to the artisanal tradition, which prioritises the use of metal, ceramics and wood. In this way, the flair of the Italian manufacturer is blended with the functional design vision of the international designers who created them: Sigrid Strömgren (Sweden), Hannes Gumpp (Germany), Gemma Fabbri (UK), Meike Langer (Germany), and Hiroshi Kawano (Japan).
This particular range has a rather northern European feel to it, which is felt through the choice of the colour nuances – Iceland grey, sky blue cloud, ice grey and pale pink – used for the furniture, accessories and lighting featured in the 2012 collection.

So how do you feel about these multifunctional pieces of furniture being used in the bathroom? It may not be traditional but I think it looks pretty good!

The rounded shapes, bold colours and influences from the animal and plant kingdoms give the florakids bathroom a feeling of fantasy and playfulness, which creates an environment perfect for kids to learn about hygiene.
The centrepiece is a washstand with a basin in the shape of a flower blossom, available in white, red or green. The range also features ceramic shelves, shaped like little clouds that can be used to complement the washbasin and they come in matching colours too. Mirrors are available in a red mirror flower design, or a green mirror caterpillar design whereby the mirrors can be lined up in series to create a comical caterpillar.
As the range is designed especially for children, the ergonomically-designed florakids WCs have no sharp edges or corners. The seats, which are available in white, red or green, are smaller in diameter and have a mini back support so children are not afraid of falling in. The ergonomic seat also lets kids who are potty training grasp onto the ears on the left and right of the seat. The single-lever mixer for the washbasin is easy for children to use as well as being hygienic.

With the florakids range by Laufen, using the bathroom should be child’s play!! What do you think?

Amber Glazed Bathroom Tiles Create Astonishing Bathroom Interiors

Glazed bathroom tiles from ModCraft can transform your bathroom into a surprising new space. By allowing the renovation of your old bathroom to encompass modern bathroom tiles, you create a specific bathroom interior design personalized to fit your needs and look glamorously modern. Hand-crafted with distinct precision, the amber glaze bathroom tiles in this bathroom setting were described by Better Homes and Gardens as “combining warm ripples of retro with cool contemporary flair“. The faceted valley tiles in amber glaze splendidly contrast with white surroundings and merge with any transparent surface nearby. The best thing about these tiles is that a small amount of them can make a big difference if combined with the right kind of materials and shapes. As you can see in the photos, the interior designer – Andee Hess – used the tiles on the wall behind the bathtub and accentuated the colour and shape of the tiles by pairing them up with heavily veined onyx. The bathtub and cabinetry were first installed and the tiles and onyx insertions were used to create a warmer atmosphere in the bathroom. Take a look at how beautiful the tiles can look in a well-designed bathroom!
